Create Your Windows 10 Installation USB Drive Guide
Understanding Windows 10 Installation Media and Why You Need a USB Drive
A Windows 10 installation USB drive is a portable storage device that contains the Windows 10 operating system files. This USB drive allows you to install Windows 10 on a computer without needing a disc drive, which many modern computers no longer have. Creating this type of media is useful in several situations: when you're building a new computer from scratch, when you need to reinstall Windows on an existing machine, or when you want to perform a clean installation to remove accumulated files and settings.

The process involves using Microsoft's official Media Creation Tool, a program designed specifically for this purpose. The tool takes care of downloading the correct Windows 10 files and configuring them on your USB drive in a way that computers can recognize and use for installation. Windows 10 comes in different versions—Home, Pro, and Enterprise—and the Media Creation Tool handles all of them.
According to Microsoft's documentation, over 1.3 billion devices run Windows worldwide, making Windows 10 one of the most widely used operating systems. Understanding how to create installation media is a practical skill that relates directly to computer maintenance and troubleshooting. You'll need a USB drive with at least 8 gigabytes (GB) of storage capacity, though 16 GB provides more comfortable working space. The drive should be empty or contain only files you don't need, since the process will erase everything currently on it.
Takeaway: A Windows 10 installation USB drive lets you install or reinstall the operating system on any compatible computer without needing a disc drive. This requires a blank USB drive of at least 8 GB and Microsoft's Media Creation Tool.
Gathering Your Materials and System Requirements
Before starting the process, gather the necessary materials and verify that your equipment meets the basic requirements. You'll need a USB drive with a minimum capacity of 8 GB. While an 8 GB drive technically works, many people find that 16 GB provides better performance and gives room for error. The USB drive must have a standard USB-A connector (the rectangular shape most people are familiar with), though USB-C adapters are available if you only have USB-C ports available.

You'll also need a computer that already has Windows or another operating system installed and an internet connection. This computer will be used to create the installation media. The computer running the Media Creation Tool needs approximately 3-5 GB of free storage space on its own drive to download Windows 10 files during the process. The download size for Windows 10 is approximately 2.5 GB, and the tool creates temporary files during the process.
For the target computer (the one that will receive Windows 10), Microsoft lists these minimum specifications: a processor of 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster, 1 GB of RAM for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit versions, 16 GB of storage for 32-bit or 20 GB for 64-bit, and a graphics card capable of DirectX 9 or later. Most computers manufactured in the last decade meet these requirements easily. If your computer is older, it may still work, but performance might be sluggish.
You'll need administrative access to both the computer creating the media and the computer receiving Windows 10. This means you need to know a user account that has administrator privileges. Additionally, make sure you have your Windows 10 product key available if you have one, though it's not required to create the installation media—you can enter it during or after installation.
Takeaway: Prepare a USB drive with at least 8 GB capacity, ensure your current computer has internet and 3-5 GB free space, and verify the target computer meets Windows 10's minimum requirements of 1 GHz processor, 1-2 GB RAM, and 16-20 GB storage.
Obtaining and Installing the Media Creation Tool
The Media Creation Tool is Microsoft's official program for creating Windows 10 installation media. This tool handles all the technical work of downloading the correct Windows 10 files and preparing your USB drive. You obtain it directly from Microsoft's website by visiting the Windows 10 download page. The page displays a button labeled "Download tool now," and clicking this gives you a file named "MediaCreationTool22H2.exe" or similar (the version number may vary depending on when you access the page).

Once you've obtained the file, locate it in your Downloads folder or wherever your browser saved it. Before running it, connect your USB drive to your computer. The Media Creation Tool does not require traditional installation like other programs—it's what's called a standalone executable file. You simply double-click it to run it. Your computer may ask for permission to make changes, which is normal for administrative tools; click "Yes" to proceed. The tool will start and display a welcome screen with license terms.
The tool window shows two main options: "Update this PC now" or "Create installation media for another PC." For most people creating a bootable USB drive, you'll select the second option. This approach gives you more control over the process and creates media that you can use on multiple computers if needed. The interface is straightforward, with each step building on the previous one.
Windows Defender and other security software will recognize the Media Creation Tool as a legitimate Microsoft program and won't interfere with its operation. If you have very strict security settings, you might receive a prompt asking you to confirm the download; this is normal and indicates your security software is working properly. The entire tool is less than 20 megabytes in size, so it downloads very quickly even on slower internet connections.
Takeaway: Obtain the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's official website, connect your USB drive, then run the tool by double-clicking it. Select the option to create installation media for another PC rather than updating your current machine.
Walking Through the Media Creation Tool Step-by-Step
Once you've launched the Media Creation Tool and accepted the license terms, the tool presents a series of clear steps. The first decision screen asks about the language, edition, and architecture of Windows 10 you want to install. For language, you'll likely choose your region's standard language. For edition, if you're unsure which one you need, "Windows 10 Home" is the most common consumer version and works for most users; "Windows 10 Pro" is for business and advanced users. The architecture choice is between 32-bit and 64-bit. Modern computers use 64-bit, which allows use of more than 4 GB of RAM. Only choose 32-bit if you have an older computer that specifically requires it.

The tool shows your selections and asks you to confirm them. After confirmation, it presents a screen asking what media type you want to create. This is where you select "USB flash drive" rather than "ISO file." An ISO file is a different format used for creating DVDs or for other purposes, but for most people, the USB flash drive option is the right choice. Click next, and the tool will show a list of USB drives currently connected to your computer. Select your USB drive from this list. Double-check that you've selected the correct drive, because the next step will erase everything on it.
The tool then downloads Windows 10 files from Microsoft's servers. This download can take 15 to 45 minutes depending on your internet speed. A 20 megabits per second (Mbps) internet connection typically takes about 20 minutes. During this time, a progress bar shows the download status. You can continue using your computer for other tasks, though bandwidth-heavy activities like video streaming will slow down the download.
After the download completes, the tool automatically prepares your USB drive. This process, called formatting, takes 5 to 10 minutes. During this time, the tool writes the Windows 10 files to your USB drive in a bootable format—meaning the computer can start (boot) directly from this drive. Once complete, the tool displays a message confirming that your USB drive is ready. At this point, you can safely remove the USB drive and use it on any compatible computer.
Takeaway: Select your language and 64-bit Windows 10 Home edition, choose USB flash drive as the media type, select your drive from the list, then allow the tool to download files (15-45 minutes) and prepare your drive (5-10 minutes).
