Free Guide to Canceling Your TSA PreCheck Membership

Understanding TSA PreCheck and How to Cancel Your Membership

TSA PreCheck is a program run by the Transportation Security Administration that allows certain travelers to go through a faster security screening process at U.S. airports. When you enroll in TSA PreCheck, you receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) that you can use when booking flights. This number tells airport security that you have already undergone a background check and vetting process, which means you may not need to remove your shoes, belt, light jacket, or laptop from your bag during screening.

The program costs $78 to $85 for a five-year membership, depending on which approved provider you used to enroll. Many travelers find the program valuable because it can save time at airport security lines, which can be especially useful if you travel frequently for work or personal reasons. However, some people find they no longer travel as much as they used to, or they prefer not to continue with the program for other reasons.

If you decide you no longer want your TSA PreCheck membership, you have the option to cancel it. This guide walks through the process of canceling your membership, what happens when you cancel, and what you should know before making this decision. Unlike some services, canceling TSA PreCheck is straightforward and does not involve complicated steps or long wait times.

Practical Takeaway: Before you cancel, think about whether you travel by air at least once per year. If you do, keeping your membership might still be worthwhile since the five-year cost breaks down to about $15-$17 per year.

Reasons Why People Cancel TSA PreCheck

People cancel their TSA PreCheck memberships for a variety of reasons. One of the most common reasons is a change in travel habits. Someone who traveled frequently for business may have retired, changed jobs, or shifted to remote work. If you no longer fly regularly, the cost of membership may not make sense to you anymore. Paying $78 to $85 for a service you use once every few years could feel like wasted money.

Another reason people cancel is relocation. If you move to a different country or a remote area far from any major airports, you may have little reason to keep the membership active. Some people also cancel because they become frustrated with airport security experiences or decide they prefer a different travel method, such as driving or using trains instead of flying.

Cost concerns are another factor. While $78 to $85 may not seem expensive to some people, others on tight budgets may decide to cut expenses by eliminating memberships they use infrequently. If you are already paying for other travel-related subscriptions or memberships, canceling TSA PreCheck might be one way to reduce overall spending.

Some travelers also cancel because they are unsure whether they are actually using their membership benefits. If you have never used your Known Traveler Number on a flight, you might not feel like you are getting value from the program. Others may cancel simply because they forgot they had the membership and do not want to continue paying for something they are not thinking about.

There are also situations where TSA PreCheck enrollment becomes invalid. For example, if you commit a crime or engage in behavior that violates TSA standards, your membership could be revoked. In these cases, the TSA will cancel your membership without you taking any action.

Practical Takeaway: Write down your current travel frequency and estimated future travel over the next year. This information will help you decide whether canceling makes financial sense for your situation.

How to Cancel Your TSA PreCheck Membership

The process for canceling TSA PreCheck depends on which enrollment provider you used when you originally signed up. The TSA does not handle cancellations directly. Instead, you must work with the private company that processed your enrollment. The main TSA PreCheck enrollment providers are Idemia, Tsa PreCheck Inc., and LifeLock. To find out which company processed your enrollment, you can check your original enrollment confirmation email or receipt.

The most straightforward way to cancel is to visit the official TSA PreCheck website and look for the cancellation or account management options. From there, you can often log into your account using your Known Traveler Number or email address and find a section to manage your membership. Many providers allow you to cancel directly through an online portal without needing to make a phone call or send an email.

If you cannot find a cancellation option online, you can contact your enrollment provider's customer service team by phone. You will likely need to provide your Known Traveler Number, date of birth, or other identifying information to confirm your identity. The customer service representative can then process your cancellation request. This typically takes just a few minutes.

You can also cancel by mailing a written request to your enrollment provider. Include your name, Known Traveler Number, date of birth, and a clear statement that you want to cancel your membership. This method takes longer, usually one to two weeks, but it provides a paper record of your cancellation request.

When you cancel, your Known Traveler Number will be deactivated. This means you should not use it when booking future flights. If you accidentally use your KTN after cancellation, airport security will not recognize it, and you may not receive PreCheck screening benefits.

Practical Takeaway: Gather your enrollment confirmation email or receipt before contacting your provider. Having your Known Traveler Number and other account details ready will make the cancellation process faster.

What Happens After You Cancel: Timeline and Effects

Once you submit your cancellation request, the timeline for your membership to become inactive depends on the enrollment provider and the method you use. If you cancel online through your provider's website, your membership is often deactivated right away, sometimes within minutes or hours. If you cancel by phone, your provider may deactivate it on the same day or within one business day. If you cancel by mail, it may take one to three weeks after your letter arrives for the cancellation to be processed.

After cancellation is processed, your Known Traveler Number will no longer be valid. TSA security systems will no longer recognize you as an enrolled PreCheck member. This means that if you book a flight and use your KTN, the system may flag it as invalid or inactive. When you arrive at the airport, you will go through standard security screening, which typically takes longer than PreCheck screening.

It is important to note that canceling your membership does not affect your passport, driver's license, or other government identification. These documents remain valid. Canceling TSA PreCheck also does not affect any other TSA programs you may have enrolled in, such as Global Entry or NEXUS, if you are a member of those programs.

Some people worry that canceling TSA PreCheck will cause problems with their travel history or create a negative record with the TSA. This is not the case. Canceling a membership is a normal administrative action and does not flag your travel account in any negative way. You will not face any penalties or complications simply because you canceled.

If you ever want to re-enroll in TSA PreCheck in the future, you can do so at any time. You will need to go through the enrollment process again, which includes an in-person appointment and a background check. You will also need to pay the membership fee again. Some people cancel and then re-enroll later if their travel habits change.

Practical Takeaway: Wait at least one week after canceling before booking a flight using your old Known Traveler Number. Call your airline or check your booking if you use your KTN by accident after canceling to make sure it does not cause problems.

Costs and Refund Information

TSA PreCheck membership costs between $78 and $85 for a five-year period. The exact cost depends on which enrollment provider you used and whether there were any promotional discounts available at the time you enrolled. Some providers occasionally offer reduced rates or waived fees, so the amount you paid may differ from the standard price.

One important thing to understand is that TSA PreCheck memberships are generally non-refundable. This means if you cancel your membership, you will not receive your money back, even if you have only used the service for a short time. This is true whether you cancel after one month or four years and eleven months. The TSA and enrollment providers typically do not issue partial refunds based on the remaining time on your membership.
