Free Guide to Changing Your Apple Watch Face

Understanding Apple Watch Face Basics

Apple Watches come with the ability to change your watch face — the display that shows the time and other information on your device. A watch face is the main screen you see when you look at your wrist. Unlike traditional watches where the face is permanent, Apple Watches let you switch between different designs and styles whenever you want.

Each watch face offers different ways to display information. Some faces show just the time in a large, simple format. Others display multiple pieces of information at once, such as the date, weather, activity rings, or upcoming calendar events. The face you choose is entirely personal and depends on what information matters most to you and what style you prefer.

Your Apple Watch stores multiple watch faces, and you can create variations of the same face with different colors or complications. Complications are small widgets or information boxes that appear on your watch face — they might show your heart rate, the weather, a timer, or your next appointment. You can customize which complications appear and where they're positioned.

The process of changing your watch face is straightforward and takes only a few moments. You don't need any special technical skills or knowledge. Whether you own an Apple Watch Series 3 or the latest model, the basic process remains similar, though newer models may have additional face options available.

Practical takeaway: Before you start, think about what information you want to see most often on your wrist. Do you care about fitness tracking? Weather? Calendar events? Your priorities will help you choose the right face and complications for your needs.

Changing Your Watch Face From Your Wrist

The most direct way to change your watch face is to use your Apple Watch itself. Start by waking your watch screen — you can do this by tapping the display, raising your wrist, or pressing the Digital Crown (the round button on the side). Once the screen is active, place your finger on the current watch face and press and hold it for about two seconds. You should feel a haptic feedback vibration, which tells you that the watch has recognized your touch.

After holding, your watch will show you different watch faces available on your device. You can swipe left and right across the screen to browse through the faces. As you swipe, you'll see the name of each face and a preview of what it looks like. Take your time to scroll through all the options — you might discover faces you forgot about or haven't considered using.

When you find a face you want to use, simply tap on it. The watch will immediately switch to that face and display it as your current watch face. The change happens instantly, so you'll see the new face right away. If you change your mind, you can repeat the process and select a different face at any time.

If you want to customize the face you've selected, you can press and hold it again after choosing it. This brings up options to modify the face's appearance, such as changing the color, style, or adding different complications. Some faces have limited customization options, while others offer many choices. Experiment to find the combination that works best for you.

One helpful feature is the ability to organize your watch faces in a specific order. As you swipe through faces on your watch, you can press and hold a face and then drag it to a new position in your collection. This lets you keep your favorite faces at the beginning of your lineup so they're easier to find.

Practical takeaway: Practice the press-and-hold motion on your watch face until it becomes natural. Once you're comfortable with the gesture, switching between faces takes just seconds, so you can change them as often as you want depending on your daily needs.

Using Your iPhone to Manage Watch Faces

You can also change and manage your Apple Watch faces using the Watch app on your iPhone. This method gives you a larger screen to work with and can be useful when you want to make detailed customizations. Open the Watch app on your iPhone — it has a red icon with a white Apple Watch symbol. Once the app opens, look for the "Watch Faces" section, which is typically near the top of the screen or in a tab at the bottom.

In the Watch Faces section, you'll see all the available watch faces your device can use. This includes faces that come built-in with your Apple Watch, as well as any third-party faces you may have downloaded through apps. Tap on any face to see more details about it, including what colors or styles are available and what complications can be added.

When you select a face in the iPhone app, you can customize its appearance extensively. You'll see options to change the color, style, or theme depending on the face. Below these options, you can add or remove complications. Tap the "+" button to add a new complication, and choose from the available options on your iPhone. This is much easier than trying to add complications on the small watch screen.

Once you've customized a face the way you want, tap the "Set as Current Watch Face" button to make it your active face. The change will sync to your watch within a few moments. You can also use the iPhone app to delete watch faces you don't use anymore, creating a cleaner collection.

The iPhone app method is especially useful if you want to create multiple versions of the same face with different complications. For example, you might have one version of the Modular face set up for fitness tracking, and another version configured to show work-related information. You can switch between these versions whenever you need them.

Practical takeaway: Spend time in the iPhone Watch app exploring all the watch face options available to you. Many people don't realize how much customization is possible through the app, and taking advantage of it can make your watch much more useful for your specific needs.

Popular Watch Face Options and Their Uses

Apple provides many different watch face designs, each serving different purposes and preferences. The Modular face is one of the most popular options because it allows you to display up to eight different complications at once. This makes it ideal if you want to see lots of information simultaneously — such as your heart rate, calendar, weather, and activity progress all on one screen.

The Chronograph face has a traditional analog clock design with a classic appearance. It includes a stopwatch function built directly into the face, making it useful if you frequently need to time activities. The Chronograph works well for people who prefer a timeless, elegant look.

The Infograph face is another information-rich option that displays multiple complications in a circular arrangement around the time. Unlike the Modular face, which uses a grid layout, Infograph organizes information in a wheel pattern. This can feel more visually organized to some users, though personal preference varies.

For fitness-focused users, the Activity Rings face is specifically designed to prominently display your three activity rings — Move, Exercise, and Stand. This face makes it easy to see your daily progress toward your fitness goals at a glance. If you use your Apple Watch primarily for health and fitness tracking, this face keeps that information front and center.

The Photos face lets you display pictures from your iPhone on your watch face. You can set it to show a single photo, or set it to rotate through multiple photos throughout the day. This is a great option if you want your watch to display personal images, though photos may be harder to see clearly on the small watch screen.

Other available faces include Simple (showing just the time in a minimal design), Solar (showing sun position), and various themed faces. Many watch faces also come in different styles and colors, so even if you like a particular face design, you can customize its appearance to match your preference.

Practical takeaway: Try at least three different watch faces over the next week to see which style and information layout feels most natural to you. What works for someone else might not work for you, so personal experimentation is the best way to find your ideal setup.

Adding and Removing Complications From Your Face

Complications are small apps or information displays that appear on your watch face. They can show weather, calendar events, heart rate, step count, battery percentage, reminders, timers, stocks, and many other types of information. Adding complications to your watch face makes your device more useful by showing relevant information without needing to open separate apps.
