Free Guide to Choosing the Right Bedding Throws

Understanding Bedding Throw Basics

A bedding throw is a smaller blanket or covering designed to drape over your bed, sofa, or chair. Unlike a full comforter or duvet that covers the entire mattress, throws typically measure between 50 by 60 inches and 60 by 80 inches, making them versatile for various spaces. Understanding what a throw is and how it differs from other bedding will help you make informed decisions about which option works for your home.

Throws serve multiple purposes beyond just warmth. Many people use them as decorative elements that add color, texture, and visual interest to a bedroom or living room. A throw can change the look of your space without requiring major purchases or renovations. When layered over a duvet or blanket, a throw adds depth and dimension to your bed's appearance. Some people prefer throws because they offer the flexibility to adjust their warmth level—you can easily remove a throw if you get too hot during the night, whereas removing a full comforter takes more effort.

The market for throws has grown significantly. According to the home textile industry, throw blanket sales have increased by approximately 15-20% over the past five years as consumers seek both functional and decorative bedding solutions. This growth reflects changing preferences toward flexible, layerable bedding rather than traditional all-in-one comforters.

Throws also work well for people with different sleep preferences sharing a bed. One person might need more warmth while the other prefers a lighter cover. Using both a primary blanket and an additional throw allows each person to adjust their comfort level independently. This flexibility makes throws practical for households with varying temperature needs.

Takeaway: Throws are versatile blankets that serve both practical and decorative purposes. Recognize that a throw works as a supplementary layer rather than a complete bedding solution, which means you'll typically use it alongside your regular sheets and comforter.

Material Options and Their Characteristics

The material of your throw determines its feel, durability, temperature regulation, and maintenance requirements. Common throw materials include cotton, polyester, fleece, wool, linen, and various blended fabrics. Each material offers distinct advantages and considerations that should influence your choice based on your climate, personal preferences, and lifestyle.

Cotton throws are popular because they breathe well and work in most seasons. High-quality cotton, particularly Egyptian or Pima cotton, feels soft against skin and becomes softer with washing. Cotton throws typically range from $30 to $100 depending on the quality and brand. They work especially well for people who sleep warm or live in warmer climates. Cotton requires regular washing but resists pilling and maintains its appearance over time. However, pure cotton may wrinkle, which matters if appearance is a priority for you.

Polyester and microfiber throws offer budget-friendly options, often ranging from $15 to $50. These synthetic materials resist wrinkles, dry quickly, and require minimal maintenance. Polyester throws feel soft and are durable, but they don't breathe as well as natural fibers, making them better for cooler months. Some people find synthetic materials less comfortable for extended skin contact, though many modern polyester blends feel surprisingly luxurious.

Fleece throws provide maximum warmth and softness, making them ideal for winter or unheated rooms. A quality fleece throw costs between $25 and $80. Fleece resists pilling when made well and dries quickly after washing. The drawback is that fleece doesn't breathe, so it's not suitable for warm sleepers or summer use. Fleece also attracts pet hair and lint more readily than other materials.

Wool throws deliver natural temperature regulation and exceptional warmth without excessive weight. Merino wool throws, which are softer than traditional wool, range from $60 to $150. Wool naturally resists odors and requires less frequent washing than cotton. However, wool requires special care, can be itchy for sensitive skin, and may cost more than other options. Wool works particularly well if you prefer sustainable, long-lasting materials.

Linen throws offer breathability and a casual aesthetic. They're excellent for warm climates and summer use. Linen costs $40 to $120 and improves with age, becoming softer with time. Linen wrinkles naturally, which some people appreciate as part of its rustic charm while others find it less polished.

Takeaway: Match your material choice to your climate and lifestyle. Consider cotton for versatility, polyester for budget and easy care, fleece for maximum warmth, wool for durability and natural properties, and linen for breathability. Your material selection will affect how often you wash your throw and how long it lasts.

Size, Weight, and Warmth Considerations

Bedding throws come in various sizes and weights, each serving different purposes. Standard throw sizes include 50 by 60 inches, 60 by 80 inches, and sometimes 70 by 90 inches for larger applications. The size you choose depends on where you plan to use the throw and how much coverage you want. A 50 by 60 inch throw works well for armchairs, the foot of a bed, or layering with other bedding. A 60 by 80 inch throw provides more complete coverage for a single or double bed and works better for larger sofas.

Weight and warmth are closely related but not identical. The warmth of a throw depends on material (as discussed in the previous section) and weight. Weight is typically measured in grams per square meter (gsm) for woven fabrics or ounces per square yard. Lightweight throws typically weigh 200-400 gsm, making them suitable for spring and fall or for layering. Midweight throws range from 400-600 gsm and work for general year-round use. Heavyweight throws exceed 600 gsm and provide substantial warmth for winter or cold climates.

Your personal temperature needs matter significantly. Research from sleep science indicates that most people sleep best when their core body temperature drops slightly, around 60-67 degrees Fahrenheit. A throw helps maintain this temperature range without overheating. However, individual preferences vary widely—some people naturally run cold and need substantial warmth, while others run warm and only need minimal layering.

The tog rating system, used primarily in the UK and increasingly in the US, measures thermal resistance. A tog rating of 1-4 indicates light warmth suitable for summer, 4-7 is midweight for spring and fall, and 7+ is heavyweight for winter. When shopping, look for tog ratings or weight information to compare warmth levels across brands and materials.

Consider your bed size when selecting a throw size. A queen or king bed looks proportional with a 60 by 80 inch throw positioned across the middle third of the bed or draped over one side. A twin or full bed looks better with a 50 by 60 inch throw or a smaller 60 by 80 throw positioned asymmetrically. If your throw will primarily cover a sofa, measure your sofa's length and width to ensure adequate coverage.

Takeaway: Choose throw size based on your bed or furniture dimensions and intended coverage. Select weight based on your climate and personal temperature preferences. Check tog ratings or weight specifications to compare warmth levels across products accurately.

Color, Pattern, and Aesthetic Matching

A throw blanket significantly impacts your room's visual appearance, making color and pattern selection an important consideration. The right choice complements your existing décor while the wrong choice creates visual discord. Understanding how to evaluate colors and patterns will help you select a throw that enhances rather than clashes with your space.

Neutral colors including white, cream, beige, gray, and black work in most rooms and coordinate with existing furniture and bedding. These colors provide flexibility—you can easily change other elements of your room without the throw appearing mismatched. Neutral throws also show less dirt and staining compared to lighter colors, making them practical for high-traffic seating or households with children and pets. A survey of interior design trends indicates that approximately 65% of throw blankets sold are neutral colors, reflecting their broad appeal and versatility.

Bold colors make visual statements and work well if your room has a defined color scheme. Deep jewel tones like emerald, sapphire, and burgundy add sophistication and work particularly well in bedrooms. Warm colors like rust, gold, and terracotta create inviting, cozy atmosph
