Understanding Black Friday: History and How It Works

Black Friday, traditionally the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, marks the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season. The term "Black Friday" originated in Philadelphia during the 1950s and 1960s, when police officers used it to describe the chaotic day after Thanksgiving when hordes of suburban shoppers and shoplifters flooded the city for the holiday sales. Store owners were said to go from "in the red" (losing money) to "in the black" (making a profit) because of the massive sales volume on this day.

Today, Black Friday has evolved significantly from its origins. According to the National Retail Federation, Black Friday 2023 saw approximately $37.4 billion in spending across online and in-store channels. The event now extends well beyond a single day—many retailers begin sales on Thanksgiving evening or earlier in November, and discounts often continue through the following Monday (Cyber Monday) and even into the subsequent week.

The mechanics of Black Friday pricing work through several strategies. Retailers use loss leaders—items sold at very low prices to attract customers into stores or to websites, hoping shoppers will purchase additional full-price merchandise. For example, a television might be discounted by 40%, but profits come from customers also buying accessories, extended warranties, or other products at regular prices. Retailers also use scarcity tactics, offering a limited quantity of sale items to create urgency and encourage faster purchasing decisions.

Understanding the structure of Black Friday sales helps you navigate them strategically. Stores often categorize deals into tiers: doorbuster deals (the deepest discounts on limited quantities), regular sale items (moderate discounts with higher availability), and everyday deals (minimal discounts designed to fill shelf space and create the perception of widespread sales).

Practical Takeaway: Recognize that Black Friday extends beyond a single day. Plan your shopping across multiple days and weeks rather than viewing Friday as the only opportunity. This reduces pressure to make hasty purchases and allows you to compare offerings across retailers.

Planning Your Shopping Strategy Before November

Effective Black Friday shopping begins months in advance, not the day before sales start. The most successful shoppers create a plan based on their actual needs rather than reacting to advertisements. Start by making a list of items you genuinely need or have planned to purchase within the next few months. This might include holiday gifts, items for your home, electronics, clothing, or sports equipment. According to consumer behavior research, shoppers who plan ahead save an average of 15-25% compared to impulse shoppers.

Once you have your list, research historical pricing data for these items. Many price-tracking websites maintain records of past sales and typical discount ranges. For example, if you're planning to buy a laptop, search for what discounts that model received during Black Friday sales in previous years. Electronics typically see 20-30% discounts, while clothing and home goods might range from 25-50% off. This historical data helps you determine whether a sale price is genuinely good or merely a marketing tactic.

Set a realistic budget and stick to it. Determine how much money you can spend across all your Black Friday shopping and allocate amounts to different categories. Write this down or enter it into your phone so you have a reference point while shopping. Studies show that consumers who establish spending limits before shopping spend 30-40% less than those who shop without a predetermined budget.

Create separate lists for different shopping categories: technology, clothing, home goods, gifts, personal care, and so on. Organize each list by priority, marking which items are must-haves and which are nice-to-haves. This prioritization helps you focus your search efforts and prevent getting distracted by appealing but non-essential items.

Sign up for retailer emails and newsletters in September and October. Many stores send preview information about their Black Friday events to email subscribers, sometimes including early-bird discounts or special offers. This gives you advance notice of what to expect and allows you to plan visits accordingly.

Practical Takeaway: Create your shopping list by September, research historical prices for your target items by October, set your budget in writing, and organize your priorities. This preparation typically results in spending 25-35% less than unplanned shopping.

Researching Prices and Comparing Deals Across Retailers

Price comparison is essential to finding genuine Black Friday deals. Each retailer positions itself differently in the market, and the same product may have vastly different prices across stores. For example, a particular brand of coffee maker might be $89.99 at Target, $84.99 at Walmart, and $79.99 at Best Buy—and these discounts may all be presented as "Black Friday deals" despite the significant price differences.

Use price-tracking websites to monitor prices throughout the year. Websites like CamelCamelCamel (for Amazon products), Honey, Rakuten, and RetailMeNot track historical prices and notify you when items drop to your target price. These tools are free and work by scanning retailer websites automatically. Many also show price trends over time, helping you understand whether a sale price is typical or exceptional.

Check manufacturer websites and authorized retailers directly. Sometimes the manufacturer's official store offers the best prices because they eliminate the middleman markup. For brand-name electronics, appliances, and designer goods, going directly to the official source often reveals competitive or superior pricing compared to major retailers.

Compare total cost, not just sale price. A shirt priced at $25 from a retailer with free shipping costs less than an identical shirt priced at $20 from a store charging $7 shipping. Factor in shipping costs, sales tax (which varies by state and sometimes by retailer), and any applicable coupon codes or cash-back offers. Some retailers offer free shipping only on orders above a certain amount, which might push you to buy extra items to qualify.

Document prices you find. Take screenshots or write down the item name, model number, original price, sale price, retailer, and sale dates. This documentation prevents you from second-guessing your purchasing decisions later and helps you catch pricing errors before checkout. Some retailers price-match competitor deals, meaning you can purchase from them while paying a competitor's lower price—but this requires proof of the competitor's offer.

Read product reviews on the retailer's site and on independent review platforms. Sometimes a lower price reflects lower product quality or a different version of the item. For example, electronics manufacturers sometimes create special versions of products exclusively for discount retailers, featuring fewer features or lower build quality than the full-price version sold elsewhere.

Practical Takeaway: Use free price-tracking tools starting in summer, compare total costs including shipping and tax, document prices you find, and verify product versions match across retailers. This typically identifies 10-20% additional savings compared to shopping without these steps.

Online Shopping Tactics and Platform-Specific Strategies

Online Black Friday shopping differs significantly from in-store shopping and requires different strategies. According to eMarketer, approximately 60% of Black Friday spending occurs online, making digital channels increasingly important. Online shopping offers advantages like broader selection, price comparison capabilities, and the ability to shop from home, but it also presents challenges including website crashes, checkout delays, and shipping uncertainties.

Clear your browser cache and cookies before shopping. Retailers sometimes use cookies to track your browsing history and may show different prices based on your previous visits or location. Clearing this data can sometimes result in lower prices or access to different promotions. Additionally, disable browser extensions that might interfere with checkout processes, as some security tools can trigger false fraud alerts on retailer websites.

Shop during off-peak hours for better website performance. Black Friday traffic causes many retail websites to slow dramatically or crash entirely, particularly between 12 a.m. and 2 a.m. EST when sales officially launch, and again during lunch hours and early evenings when most people are browsing. Shopping between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m., or during late night hours after 10 p.m., typically provides faster website speeds and more inventory availability.

Use coupon codes and promotional stacking when possible. Many retailers allow you to combine a percentage-off coupon with an additional dollar-amount discount or free-shipping code. Check the retailer's terms carefully—some explicitly prohibit combining offers, while others allow multiple codes. Websites like RetailMeNot, Brad's Deals, and Slickdeals aggregate coupon codes submitted by users, though you should verify codes work before checkout since not all submissions are current
