Free Guide to Finding Your Towed Vehicle

Understanding How Vehicle Towing Works

When a vehicle is towed, it typically happens for one of several reasons. Law enforcement or parking enforcement may tow a car that's illegally parked, blocking a fire hydrant, in a handicapped space without proper authorization, or parked in a no-parking zone. Private property owners can also arrange towing if a vehicle is parked on their land without permission. Sometimes vehicles are towed after accidents, during traffic enforcement operations, or when they're abandoned on public roads.

The towing process begins when an officer or authorized person determines a vehicle should be removed. A tow truck is dispatched to the location, and the vehicle is transported to an impound lot or storage facility. This entire process typically takes between 30 minutes to two hours from the time towing is authorized. During this time, the vehicle owner may not immediately know what happened to their car.

Understanding the reasons vehicles get towed can help you recognize why yours might have been removed. Common scenarios include parking violations in municipal areas, vehicles left at private businesses without authorization, or cars involved in traffic incidents. Each situation has different procedures for recovery and different fees associated with retrieval.

The storage facility where your vehicle is held will charge daily storage fees, typically ranging from $25 to $75 per day depending on your location and the type of vehicle. Some facilities charge higher rates for larger vehicles like trucks or SUVs. These fees accumulate daily, so finding your vehicle quickly becomes financially important.

Practical Takeaway: Knowing the most common reasons for towing helps you search more effectively. If your vehicle is missing, think about where it was parked and whether any parking rules might have been violated in that location.

Checking Local Police and Impound Records

The first step in locating a towed vehicle is contacting your local police department's non-emergency line. Many police departments maintain records of all vehicles towed within their jurisdiction. When you call, provide your vehicle's license plate number, vehicle identification number (VIN), or description. The dispatcher can check if police initiated the tow or if it was done by a private towing company.

Different cities organize their towing records differently. Some larger police departments have dedicated towing units with their own phone lines and databases. Smaller towns may handle towing information through the main police station. If you're unsure which agency towed your vehicle, calling the local police department is the most direct route to get this information. Most police departments can answer questions about police-initiated tows within minutes.

When contacting police, have the following information ready: your license plate number, the vehicle's make and model, the color of the vehicle, when you last saw it, and where it was parked. Police can then search their systems and tell you whether they initiated the tow. If they did, they can provide the name and phone number of the towing company that removed it.

If the tow was not police-initiated, the vehicle may have been towed by a private towing company hired by a property owner or manager. In this case, police records won't show the tow, but officers can often tell you this and may have information about which private companies operate in the area.

Some jurisdictions also maintain online databases where you can search for towed vehicles. Cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York have searchable online systems where you enter your license plate number and receive information about whether your vehicle was towed. Check your city or county's official website to see if this option is available in your area.

Practical Takeaway: Save your local police non-emergency phone number in your phone. When a vehicle goes missing, this should be your first call. Police can confirm within minutes whether they towed your vehicle and provide you with the towing company's contact information.

Finding Private Towing Companies and Storage Yards

Private towing companies operate independently from police departments and handle tows initiated by property owners, businesses, and parking lot managers. If your vehicle was towed from private property—such as a business parking lot, apartment complex, or private parking garage—a private company likely handled the removal.

To find which private company towed your vehicle, start by contacting the property owner or manager where your vehicle was parked. If it was towed from an apartment complex, speak with the leasing office. If it was a business parking lot, ask to speak with the manager. They can tell you immediately which towing company they use and provide contact information. This is often the fastest way to locate your vehicle.

Many areas have lists of licensed towing companies available through the city or county. You can contact the local business licensing bureau or transportation department and ask for a list of towing companies operating in your area. Some regions require towing companies to be registered, and these lists are often available online or by phone.

Once you identify a towing company, call them directly with your license plate number and vehicle description. Their staff can search their facility and tell you whether they have your vehicle in their lot. Storage facilities maintain detailed records of every vehicle stored, including the date it was towed, the towing charge, daily storage fees, and current location within the lot.

Storage yards are typically open during business hours, though some offer 24-hour access to retrieve vehicles. Common hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some facilities open Saturday mornings. When you call, ask about their hours and what documentation or payment methods you'll need to bring to retrieve your vehicle.

It's worth noting that towing companies are legally required to provide certain information when you call. They must tell you where your vehicle is, what fees have accumulated, and what steps are necessary to retrieve it. If a towing company is uncooperative or won't provide this information, you can contact your local consumer protection agency or the state attorney general's office.

Practical Takeaway: If your vehicle was towed from private property, contact the property owner or manager first. They know exactly which company towed the vehicle and can connect you immediately. This saves time compared to calling multiple towing companies.

Understanding Towing and Storage Fees

When a vehicle is towed, several fees accumulate. The towing fee—the charge for actually removing and transporting the vehicle—typically ranges from $100 to $300, depending on the distance traveled and the type of vehicle. Larger vehicles or those requiring special equipment to tow may cost more. Some towing companies charge based on mileage, while others charge a flat rate.

Storage fees are charged daily and begin accumulating as soon as the vehicle arrives at the storage facility. These fees typically range from $25 to $75 per day depending on your location, the size of the vehicle, and whether the facility is publicly or privately operated. A vehicle stored for one week could accumulate $175 to $525 in storage fees alone, on top of the initial towing charge.

Administrative or processing fees may also apply. These typically range from $25 to $100 and cover the paperwork and database entry for your vehicle. Some facilities charge a gate fee when you pick up your vehicle, usually between $15 and $25.

Total charges can accumulate quickly. Here's an example: a vehicle towed 5 miles (towing fee of $150) and stored for 10 days at $40 per day (storage of $400) with a $50 administrative fee would total $600. This is why locating your vehicle quickly is financially important.

When you contact the towing company or storage facility, ask them to itemize all charges. Request the exact towing fee, daily storage rate, and any additional fees that apply. Ask about their accepted payment methods—most accept cash, credit cards, and debit cards, though some may require cash for payment.

Some states and municipalities have regulations limiting how much towing and storage companies can charge. California, for example, caps towing fees at approximately $280-$405 depending on vehicle size, and storage fees at around $20-$40 per day, though these amounts adjust annually. Check your state's regulations to understand what constitutes a reasonable charge in your area.

Practical Takeaway: Ask for an itemized breakdown of all fees before paying. Understanding the total cost helps you budget for vehicle recovery and ensures you're not being charged unfairly.
