Free Guide to Florida Prison Visitation Scheduling

Understanding Florida Prison Visitation Basics

Florida operates one of the largest prison systems in the United States, with 48 state correctional institutions holding approximately 66,000 incarcerated individuals as of 2024. The Florida Department of Corrections (FDOC) manages visitation at these facilities. Before scheduling a visit, it's important to understand how the system works and what to expect.

Visitation is a privilege, not a right, according to FDOC policy. This means the department can restrict or deny visits based on security concerns, facility operations, or an incarcerated person's disciplinary status. Each facility operates under its own visitation schedule, though the state provides general guidelines that most prisons follow.

Florida has multiple types of correctional facilities, including reception and classification centers, work camps, minimum-security facilities, and maximum-security prisons. The facility where someone is incarcerated determines which visitation rules apply. For example, maximum-security facilities may have more restrictions than minimum-security locations.

The FDOC maintains an online inmate locator system where visitors can find which facility holds the person they wish to visit. This step is crucial because sending visitor information to the wrong facility creates delays. The inmate locator is available on the FDOC website at dc.state.fl.us and is free to use.

Visitation policies address safety, security, and order within prisons. Restrictions exist because mixing large numbers of outside visitors with incarcerated individuals creates security challenges. Understanding these reasons helps visitors appreciate why certain rules exist, even when they seem inconvenient.

Practical Takeaway: Start by locating the specific FDOC facility where your person is housed using the online inmate locator. Write down the facility name and contact phone number, as you'll need this information for all scheduling steps.

Visitation Scheduling Methods and Procedures

Florida prisons use two primary methods for scheduling visits: online systems and telephone scheduling. Most facilities now accept scheduled visits through their individual facility visitation systems, though some smaller facilities may primarily use phone scheduling. The method available depends on the specific prison location.

Online scheduling has become the preferred method at larger FDOC facilities. Visitors create an account on the facility's visitation portal, enter their information and the incarcerated person's information, and select available time slots. The system shows which dates and times have openings. Online systems typically require visitors to register before their first visit, which takes 10 to 15 minutes.

Telephone scheduling remains available at all facilities. Visitors call the facility's visitation line during business hours—typically 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, though some facilities have extended hours. A staff member helps schedule the visit over the phone. This method works well for people without internet access, though wait times on the phone can range from 10 to 45 minutes depending on facility volume.

Most FDOC facilities operate visitation during the following general windows:

• Saturday and Sunday: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (most common weekend hours)
• Wednesday: 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (common evening visitation)
• Some facilities offer Friday evening visits from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
• Holiday schedules differ; many facilities close visitation on major holidays

Visitation schedules vary by facility and can change without notice. Before scheduling, confirm current hours by calling the facility or checking its website section. Facility contact information is listed on the FDOC main website under individual institution pages.

Visitors typically must schedule in advance—usually at least 24 hours before the visit, though some facilities require 48 to 72 hours' notice. This allows FDOC staff to verify visitor information and ensure security clearance. Last-minute visits are generally not possible.

Practical Takeaway: Determine whether your facility uses online or phone scheduling by checking the FDOC facility page. If online, create your account during a calm time. If phone-based, prepare a list of basic information before calling so the process moves faster.

Visitor Registration Requirements and Documentation

Before visiting a Florida prison, visitors must register with that specific facility. Registration is a one-time process at each prison location. Once registered, visitors don't need to register again at that facility unless their information changes significantly or the registration expires.

Standard registration information includes:

• Full legal name (as it appears on government-issued photo identification)
• Date of birth
• Address
• Phone number
• Email address (if available)
• Relationship to the incarcerated person
• Driver's license number or other identification number

Visitors must bring government-issued photo identification to every visit. Acceptable forms include:

• Driver's license
• State identification card
• Passport
• Military identification card
• Tribal identification card

The identification must match the name used during registration. If a visitor has changed their legal name since registering, they must update their registration before the visit. Expired identification may be accepted in some cases, but current identification is strongly preferred.

Children visiting must also have identification, typically a birth certificate or school ID. Some facilities accept other documentation, so contact the specific prison to confirm what works for minors. Parents or guardians provide identification for children.

The FDOC conducts background checks on all visitors. People with certain criminal convictions, restraining orders, or other legal issues may be denied visitation. The background check is not about who the visitor is as a person but about whether visitation poses a security risk. Reasons for denial include active felony warrants, orders of protection against the incarcerated person, or convictions for certain crimes involving violence or drugs.

Visitors can call the facility to ask whether a background concern might prevent visitation, though staff cannot always answer this definitively before processing. It's better to register and find out through the system than to be turned away at the gate.

Practical Takeaway: Gather your government-issued photo identification and prepare accurate personal information before registering. If you've changed names, been divorced, or had other legal status changes, have documents ready to update your registration correctly.

What to Bring, What to Wear, and What to Expect at the Facility

Florida prisons have strict rules about what visitors can bring into the facility. Understanding these rules prevents delays, confiscation of items, and potential denial of entry.

Visitors are typically allowed to bring:

• Government-issued photo identification
• Car keys (left at the gate in most cases)
• A small amount of money—usually $50 to $100 in cash for vending machines (rules vary by facility)
• A clear plastic bag containing medications if needed during the visit

Visitors are NOT allowed to bring:

• Weapons of any kind, including pocket knives or pepper spray
• Drugs or alcohol
• Cameras or recording devices
• Purses, backpacks, or bags (must be left in the car)
• Food or drinks (except clear water in some facilities)
• Electronic devices except in limited cases at some facilities
• Contraband items including tobacco, lighters, or certain clothing items

Prison security conducts metal detector screening and sometimes pat-down searches. This is standard procedure and not a reflection on the visitor. Arriving 15 minutes early allows time for this process without rushing.

Dress codes for visitors exist to maintain facility security and prevent smuggling of contraband. General guidelines include:

• No clothing that resembles inmate uniforms (orange, tan, or khaki in some facilities)
