Free Guide to Removing Proxy Settings From Your Device

Understanding Proxy Settings and Why You Might Want to Remove Them

A proxy server acts as an intermediary between your device and the websites you visit. When you connect through a proxy, your device sends requests to the proxy server first, which then forwards those requests to the destination website. The website sees the proxy's address instead of your actual device's IP address. This can be useful in certain situations, but many people find they have proxy settings configured that they no longer need or want active.

Proxy settings can be configured at different levels on your device. They might be set through your operating system's network settings, within individual applications like web browsers, or through network group policies if you're on a corporate network. Some users intentionally set up proxies for privacy reasons, to bypass geographic restrictions, or to filter content. Others may have proxy settings that were configured by an IT department at work, installed as part of software, or added without their knowledge.

Understanding where and why proxies are configured on your device is the first step toward removing them. Common reasons people want to remove proxy settings include: experiencing slower internet speeds because traffic is being routed through an additional server, having difficulty accessing certain websites that block proxy connections, troubleshooting connection problems, or simply no longer needing the proxy functionality. Some malware also configures proxies without permission, so removing unwanted proxies can be part of maintaining device security.

The process for removing proxies varies depending on your operating system and where the proxy is configured. Windows devices, Mac computers, and mobile devices each have different approaches. Browser-specific proxies differ from system-wide proxies. Understanding these distinctions helps you target the right settings for removal. This guide walks through the main locations where proxy settings exist and how to find and remove them on various devices.

Practical Takeaway: Before removing proxy settings, identify why you want to remove them and where they might be configured. Check whether the proxy is system-wide or application-specific, as this determines where you'll need to look for removal options.

Removing Proxy Settings on Windows Devices

Windows computers store proxy settings in the operating system's network configuration. To access these settings on Windows 10 and Windows 11, you'll navigate through the Settings application. Start by clicking the Start menu and typing "proxy settings" into the search box. Select "Proxy settings" from the search results, which opens the Settings app with the Proxy page already displayed. This page shows your current proxy configuration and provides toggle switches to disable proxy functionality.

The Proxy settings page in Windows displays several sections. The "Automatic proxy setup" section shows whether automatic proxy detection or a proxy auto-config (PAC) file is enabled. Below that is the "Manual proxy setup" section, which displays any manually configured proxy addresses and ports. If proxies are listed in either section, you can disable them by toggling the switches to the "Off" position. For manual proxy setup, toggle off the switch next to "Use a proxy server" to disable any manually configured proxies.

If you're using Windows 7 or an older version, the process differs slightly. Open the Control Panel and navigate to Internet Options. Click the Connections tab, then select "LAN settings." This opens a dialog box showing proxy configuration. Uncheck the "Use a proxy server for your LAN" option if it's selected. You can also check the "Automatically detect settings" option to allow Windows to detect network settings without using a proxy, though this isn't necessary if you simply uncheck the proxy server option.

Some corporate environments use Group Policy to enforce proxy settings. If you're on a work computer and proxy settings reappear after you disable them, Group Policy may be controlling them. You can view which policies are active by opening the Group Policy Editor (type "gpedit.msc" in the search box). Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer > Internet Control Panel > Advanced page. Look for proxy-related policies, though modifying these typically requires administrator permissions and may violate workplace policies.

After disabling proxy settings, restart your browser or disconnect and reconnect to your network to ensure the changes take effect. Test your connection by visiting websites that previously had issues. If problems persist, clear your browser's cache and cookies, as some websites cache proxy-related connection information. Document the proxy addresses you disabled before removing them, in case you need to restore them later.

Practical Takeaway: On Windows, use Settings > Proxy settings to toggle off both automatic and manual proxy configurations. For older Windows versions, use Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings. Always restart your browser after making changes.

Removing Proxy Settings on Mac and Apple Devices

Mac computers store proxy settings in the Network settings within System Preferences (or System Settings on newer macOS versions). To access these, click the Apple menu in the top-left corner and select "System Preferences" or "System Settings" depending on your macOS version. Then click "Network." The Network panel displays all your network connections. Select the connection you use most frequently (typically WiFi or Ethernet) from the list on the left side of the window.

Once you've selected your network connection, click the "Advanced..." button in the lower-right corner of the Network window. This opens a detailed settings panel with multiple tabs at the top. Click the "Proxies" tab to view your current proxy configuration. This tab shows different types of proxies that may be configured: Web Proxy (HTTP), Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS), FTP Proxy, SOCKS Proxy, and others. Any proxy that has a server address and port listed is currently active.

To remove proxy settings, uncheck the boxes next to each proxy type that's currently enabled. When you uncheck the box, the server address and port fields become inactive and grayed out. Uncheck all proxy types that you want to disable. After unchecking the necessary boxes, click "OK" to close the Advanced settings panel, then click "Apply" in the main Network window to save the changes. The proxies are now disabled for that network connection.

If you use multiple network connections (WiFi and Ethernet, for example), check whether proxy settings are configured on each connection. Select each connection in the left panel and repeat the process for any that have proxies enabled. Some Mac users also configure proxies within Safari or other applications. In Safari, click Safari in the menu bar, select "Preferences," click the "Advanced" tab, then click "Change Settings..." next to "Proxies" to modify application-level proxy settings.

On iPad and iPhone, proxy settings are configured within the WiFi settings for each network. Go to Settings > WiFi, tap the information icon next to your WiFi network, scroll down to the HTTP Proxy section, and select "Off" instead of "Manual" or "Auto." This removes proxy configuration for that specific WiFi network. Repeat this process for any other WiFi networks where you want to disable proxies.

Practical Takeaway: On Mac, access System Settings > Network, select your connection, click Advanced, then uncheck all enabled proxies in the Proxies tab. For iOS devices, disable proxies in WiFi network settings for each network individually.

Removing Proxy Settings From Web Browsers

Web browsers can have proxy settings configured independently from your operating system. Browser-level proxy settings override some system settings, so even if you disable system proxies, a browser might still use its own proxy configuration. The process for checking and removing browser proxies varies by browser. In Google Chrome, click the three vertical dots menu in the top-right corner, select Settings, then click Advanced on the left side. Under the System section, you'll see "Open proxy settings." Clicking this link opens your operating system's proxy settings, not Chrome-specific settings. However, Chrome also allows proxy configuration through extensions. Check your installed extensions for any that might be configuring a proxy, and remove any suspicious or unnecessary proxy-related extensions.

Firefox handles proxy settings within the browser itself. Click the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top-right, select Settings, then go to General. Scroll down to the Network section and click "Settings" next to "Configure how Firefox connects to the internet." A Connection Settings dialog opens showing your current proxy configuration. Select "No proxy" from the radio button options to disable all proxies in Firefox. This setting applies only to Firefox and doesn't affect other browsers or system-level proxies.

Microsoft Edge uses system-level proxy settings like Chrome, so you access them through the operating system rather than within Edge's settings. However, Edge allows proxy configuration through Group Policy if you're on a Windows domain.
