Free Guide to Renting Motorcycle Trailers for Travel

Understanding Motorcycle Trailer Types and Their Uses

Motorcycle trailers come in several distinct varieties, each designed for different travel needs and motorcycle types. Understanding these categories helps travelers make informed decisions about which trailer might work for their situation.

Single-axle enclosed trailers represent one of the most popular rental options. These trailers typically measure between 5 and 7 feet long and can accommodate one or two motorcycles, depending on their size. The enclosed design protects motorcycles from weather, road debris, and theft during transport. Many travelers use enclosed trailers when moving motorcycles across long distances or storing them temporarily at destinations. A typical enclosed single-axle trailer weighs between 1,200 and 1,800 pounds empty.

Open trailers offer a more lightweight alternative. These feature a steel frame with a loading deck but no protective covering. Open trailers generally cost less to rent than enclosed models and are easier to load and unload since nothing blocks access. However, they provide no weather protection and may expose motorcycles to dirt and insects during highway travel. Open trailers work well for short-distance moves or when weather conditions appear stable throughout the journey.

Tandem-axle trailers accommodate multiple motorcycles or heavier single motorcycles. These trailers feature two axles instead of one, providing greater stability when loaded and improved weight distribution. Tandem trailers typically range from 7 to 12 feet in length and can carry two to four motorcycles depending on their specifications. However, tandem trailers require more powerful towing vehicles and may have higher rental rates.

Flatbed trailers provide maximum flexibility for loading various motorcycle types and sizes. Some riders prefer flatbeds because they eliminate concerns about fitting motorcycles into confined spaces. The open design means no weather protection, but flatbeds excel for short trips or when riders want quick loading and unloading.

Practical takeaway: List your specific needs—number of motorcycles, travel distance, expected weather, and frequency of loading—before comparing trailer types. Different trips may require different trailer styles.

How to Find Motorcycle Trailer Rentals in Your Area

Locating available motorcycle trailer rentals requires knowing where to search and what questions to ask. Several categories of businesses offer trailer rentals, each with different advantages and limitations.

Equipment rental chains represent the most widely available option. National companies like U-Haul, Penske, Home Depot, and Lowes maintain rental locations in most towns and cities. These businesses typically rent trailers by the day, week, or month. Many locations stock general-purpose utility trailers that can accommodate motorcycles, though staff may have limited knowledge about motorcycle-specific requirements. To use these services, renters must present a valid driver's license and provide payment information. Some locations require renters to be at least 18 years old, while others set the minimum at 21. Rental costs vary significantly by location and season, with daily rates ranging from $20 to $75 for basic utility trailers.

Specialty motorcycle rental companies focus specifically on motorcycle equipment and accessories. These businesses understand motorcycle transport requirements and often stock trailers designed for motorcycles. To locate specialty rental companies, search online for "motorcycle trailer rental" combined with your city or region. Many operate in areas with large motorcycle communities. Specialty rental companies may offer better expertise but often charge higher rates than general equipment rental chains.

Local trailer rental shops operate independently in many communities. These small businesses rent trailers to local residents and may offer better rates through personal relationships and repeat customer discounts. Visit local automotive supply stores, motorcycle shops, or ask at marinas and storage facilities for referrals to trailer rental operations nearby.

Peer-to-peer rental platforms have emerged in recent years, allowing private trailer owners to rent their equipment directly to users. Websites like Turo and similar services connect owners with renters. These platforms may offer motorcycle-specific trailers and potentially lower rates, though renters assume responsibility for any damage.

Practical takeaway: Call ahead to confirm trailer availability for your desired dates, ask about specific motorcycle accommodations, and compare rates across at least three different providers before making a rental decision.

Essential Information About Rental Requirements and Documentation

Renting a motorcycle trailer involves meeting certain requirements that vary by company and location. Understanding these prerequisites helps travelers plan accordingly and avoid unexpected complications.

A valid driver's license represents the most basic requirement. Most rental companies require renters to present an original, government-issued photo ID. Expired licenses generally will not be accepted. International travelers may use a passport combined with an International Driving Permit (IDP), though some companies may request additional documentation. A few rental companies accept military ID as a primary identification form.

Age restrictions apply at most rental facilities. The majority of companies require renters to be at least 18 years old to rent trailers, though some set the minimum at 21. Renters under 25 may face surcharges or insurance requirements at certain locations. These policies vary between companies, so checking age requirements before visiting a rental location saves time.

Payment methods typically include credit cards, debit cards, and occasionally cash, though policies differ. Most companies place a hold on the credit card for the rental amount plus a security deposit, which may range from $100 to $500. This deposit protects against damage or theft. The hold typically releases within 3 to 7 business days after returning the trailer in agreed-upon condition. Some companies accept debit cards for payment but may decline them for security deposits.

Insurance and liability questions deserve careful attention. Most rental companies include basic liability coverage in their rental agreement, though coverage limits and exclusions vary. Renters should ask what damages are covered under the rental agreement and what damages would be the renter's responsibility. Some renters choose to add optional damage waivers for a daily fee, which limits their financial liability if the trailer sustains damage. Check whether personal vehicle insurance or credit card coverage extends to rental equipment—many policies do provide this protection, potentially eliminating the need for additional waivers.

Vehicle towing capacity must be verified before renting. A motorcycle trailer adds weight to your vehicle's load, and every vehicle has a maximum towing capacity specified in the owner's manual. Attempting to tow a trailer exceeding this limit risks mechanical damage and safety hazards. Before visiting a rental location, locate your vehicle's towing capacity information. If your vehicle's capacity falls below the trailer's weight plus the motorcycle weight, select a lighter trailer or arrange alternative transportation.

Practical takeaway: Gather your driver's license, verify your vehicle's towing capacity, and call the rental company to confirm current insurance policies and damage coverage before arriving for pickup.

Preparation Steps and Safety Considerations for Trailer Transport

Preparing a motorcycle and vehicle for trailer transport involves several technical and safety steps that protect both the motorcycle and other road users. Taking time for proper preparation prevents damage and creates safer travel conditions.

Securing the motorcycle correctly represents the most critical safety step. Motorcycles must be fastened to the trailer using straps, chains, or tie-down systems rated for the motorcycle's weight. The typical guide suggests using four tie-downs when possible—one near each wheel—positioned to distribute forces evenly. Ratchet straps should attach to the motorcycle's frame or designated tie-down points, never to handlebars or other easily damaged components. Straps should be snug but not so tight they bend or crush frame components. Before departing, test the motorcycle's movement by attempting to shift it by hand; proper securing means the motorcycle should not rock or move at all.

Tire pressure and condition require attention before transport. Check both the motorcycle's tires and the trailer's tires for adequate pressure and visible damage. Underinflated tires can overheat during highway travel and may fail. The motorcycle's owner manual specifies correct pressure; match that specification before loading. Similarly, verify trailer tire pressure according to the trailer's specification label, typically found on or near the trailer tongue.

Trailer brakes and lighting need verification. If the trailer weighs over 3,000 pounds, federal regulations require functioning brakes. Test the trailer's brake lights and turn signals before departing to ensure other drivers can see braking and turning intentions. Many rental companies include this testing as part of the pre-rental inspection, but renters should verify these systems function correctly.

Weight distribution affects handling and stability. A loaded motorcycle trailer should have approximately 10 to 15 percent of the total trailer weight forward of the axles. This balance prevents trailer sway and improves braking performance. When loading a motorcycle, position it slightly forward on the trailer deck rather than centered
