Free Guide to Screen Recording With Audio

Understanding Screen Recording Basics

Screen recording is the process of capturing video of everything that happens on your computer or mobile device screen. This includes your cursor movements, clicks, text you type, and any applications or websites you view. When you add audio to screen recording, you capture sound from your microphone, system audio, or both simultaneously with the video.

Screen recording with audio has become increasingly common for various purposes. Educators use it to create tutorial videos and lectures. Software developers record their screens to demonstrate bugs or new features. Business professionals create presentation recordings and training materials. Content creators produce YouTube videos, streaming content, and educational courses. Customer service representatives use recordings to document support interactions. The technology itself has existed for years, but modern tools have made the process much simpler than it was in the past.

Understanding how screen recording works helps you choose the right approach for your needs. Your device must have enough storage space to save the video file, which can be quite large. For example, a one-hour video recording at standard quality can use 500 megabytes to several gigabytes of storage. Your computer or device also needs adequate processing power to handle recording while running other programs. Some devices struggle to record high-quality video while simultaneously running demanding applications.

Audio quality depends on several factors: your microphone quality, background noise levels, and your recording software settings. A basic built-in microphone may produce acceptable results for casual recordings, while professional work often requires an external microphone. Background noise such as fans, traffic, or typing can significantly impact audio quality, so recording in a quiet environment generally produces better results.

Practical Takeaway: Before you start recording, check your device's available storage space, close unnecessary programs to free up processing power, and find a quiet location for better audio quality. Test your microphone and audio levels with a short practice recording to ensure everything sounds right.

Built-In Screen Recording Tools on Windows

Windows 10 and Windows 11 include a built-in screen recording feature called Xbox Game Bar, which contains everything you need to record your screen with audio at no cost. To access this feature, press the Windows key plus G simultaneously on your keyboard. This opens the Game Bar overlay on your screen, which includes recording controls. The tool was originally designed for gaming but works equally well for recording presentations, tutorials, software demonstrations, and other screen activities.

The Xbox Game Bar interface displays several options. You'll see a recording widget that shows a record button, a stop button once recording begins, and a settings icon. Before you start recording, click the microphone icon in the Game Bar to ensure your audio input is enabled. You can select which audio sources to record—your microphone, system audio, or both. Some users want to capture only their voice during a tutorial, while others need both their narration and the sounds coming from their computer.

To begin recording, click the record button or press Windows key plus Alt plus R. A notification appears confirming that recording has started. Your screen will show a timer in the corner displaying how long the recording has been running. You can minimize the Game Bar and continue working normally—the recording continues in the background. When finished, click the stop button or press Windows key plus Alt plus R again to end the recording.

Recorded videos save automatically to a folder on your computer. In Windows 10 and 11, Xbox Game Bar recordings typically save to your Videos folder in a subfolder called "Captures." You can locate your recordings and move them to other locations as needed. The tool records in MP4 format, which is compatible with most video players and editing software. You can adjust recording quality settings within the Game Bar options, though the default quality settings work well for most purposes.

Practical Takeaway: Use Windows key plus G to open Game Bar, ensure your microphone is enabled in the settings, press Windows key plus Alt plus R to start recording, and find your finished video in the Videos/Captures folder on your computer.

Built-In Screen Recording Tools on Mac

Apple's macOS includes a native screen recording feature that integrates with the Screenshot application. This tool has been available in recent versions of macOS and requires no additional software. To access screen recording on Mac, press Shift plus Command plus 5 simultaneously. This opens the screenshot toolbar at the bottom of your screen with several recording options.

The screenshot toolbar displays buttons for different recording modes. One button allows you to record the entire screen, while another lets you select a specific portion of your screen to record. Choose the option that matches your needs—recording your whole screen works well for presentations, while recording just a portion is useful when you want to highlight a specific window or area. After selecting your recording type, click the "Record" button to begin.

Before you start recording, click "Options" in the toolbar to configure your audio settings. Mac allows you to record without audio, with microphone audio only, or with system audio only. System audio refers to sounds coming from your computer—such as music playing, video audio, or application sounds. Some users need only their voice, others need only computer sounds, and some need both. You can also choose where to save your recording files through these options.

Once you've configured your settings and clicked Record, a floating window appears showing you're actively recording. When finished, click the Stop button in the menu bar, or press Shift plus Command plus 5 again and select Stop Recording. A preview of your recording appears in the corner of your screen. You can click this preview to edit or trim the video if needed, or click elsewhere to save it in your selected location. By default, Mac saves recordings to your Desktop, though you can change this in the options.

Practical Takeaway: Press Shift plus Command plus 5 on your Mac, select your recording area, click Options to enable audio, click Record, and then click Stop when finished. Your recording saves to the location you selected in Options.

Free Third-Party Screen Recording Software

Beyond built-in tools, numerous free applications are available for screen recording with audio. Popular options include OBS Studio, ShareX, Camtasia, and ScreenFlow. OBS Studio stands out as a powerful, open-source option available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Despite being free, OBS Studio offers professional-grade features including the ability to record multiple audio sources, customize your recording resolution, and add visual elements like text or logos.

OBS Studio works by creating "scenes"—basically different recording setups you can switch between. You add "sources" to your scene, which can include your screen, specific windows, or webcam feed. You configure your audio by adding microphone and system audio sources to your scene. This separation of audio sources gives you precise control over what gets recorded. For example, you could record your microphone at a different volume level than your system audio, ensuring both are clearly audible in the final recording.

Setting up OBS Studio requires a bit more initial configuration than built-in tools, but the process becomes straightforward with practice. After downloading and installing OBS Studio, launch the application. In the main window, you'll see a "Sources" section where you add what to record. Click the plus button to add your screen or window as a source. Then add an audio input source for your microphone and optionally add system audio. Click Start Recording when ready, and Stop Recording when done.

ShareX is another free option, particularly popular on Windows. It offers simplified screen recording alongside other useful features like screenshot taking and file sharing. ShareX recordings typically produce smaller file sizes than some alternatives, making it practical for users with limited storage. Camtasia is available in a free trial version with full features for 30 days, useful if you want to test it before purchasing. These tools offer varying levels of complexity, so choosing one depends on your comfort level with technology and specific recording needs.

Practical Takeaway: Download OBS Studio for powerful free recording capabilities on any operating system, or try ShareX on Windows for simpler operation with smaller file sizes. Both tools offer the ability to record screen and audio simultaneously once you configure your audio sources.

Optimizing Audio Quality During Recording

Quality audio is essential for professional-sounding screen recordings. Several specific steps improve your audio outcomes significantly. First, invest in adequate microphone equipment if possible. USB microphones designed for recording, such as the Blue Yeti or Audio-Technica AT2020USB, produce dramatically better sound than built-in laptop microphones. These microphones typically cost between fifty and one hundred dollars but last for years. Budget microphones from basic computer stores may actually perform worse than built-in options, so research specific models before purchasing.
