Court records in Maryland are considered public information with limited exceptions. Records may be restricted in cases involving sealed proceedings, juvenile cases, or matters where a judge has issued a protective order. The Baltimore County Circuit Court, District Court, and various administrative courts maintain separate databases and filing systems. Each court type handles different categories of cases, so knowing which court handled your matter of interest is important for directing your search efforts.

Public access to these records serves important functions. Researchers, journalists, legal professionals, and individuals may search records for background information, historical research, or to verify details about court proceedings. Many people need to locate records for employment verification, rental applications, legal research, or genealogical purposes.

The Baltimore County Court system consists of multiple divisions. The Circuit Court handles major civil lawsuits, criminal felonies, and family law matters like divorce and custody. The District Court manages smaller civil claims, misdemeanor criminal cases, and traffic violations. Administrative courts handle matters like landlord-tenant disputes and other specialized proceedings. Each division maintains its own record systems and search procedures.

Practical takeaway: Before you begin searching, identify which type of case you're looking for and which court division likely handled it. This will help you direct your search to the correct location and database.

To search online, you typically need basic information about the case you're seeking. A person's name and approximate timeframe can help narrow results. More detailed documents may require additional steps to view or obtain.

The Circuit Court for Baltimore County maintains records dating back many years. The District Court system similarly preserves its records. Online databases may show recent cases more readily than older ones, though historical cases are still available through other methods. The amount of detail visible in online searches varies depending on the case type and court division.

When searching, you may encounter records that show basic information but require you to obtain full case documents through other means. Some courts provide limited information online for privacy or administrative reasons. Case documents that are available online might include docket sheets, which list dates and actions taken in a case, but not necessarily full pleadings or evidence.

Criminal case records show the charges filed, court dates, plea agreements if any, verdicts or dispositions, and sentences. For felony cases in Circuit Court, records may include detailed information about proceedings. Misdemeanor cases in District Court also maintain records showing charges and outcomes. Records may indicate whether a case was dismissed, resulted in conviction, or was found not guilty.

Civil case records document disputes between parties over non-criminal matters. These records show the claims made, evidence presented, and the court's judgment. Civil cases might involve breach of contract, personal injury, property disputes, or collection matters. The records typically include the complaint or initial filing, responses from the other party, and the final judgment or settlement.

Family law records include divorce decrees, custody orders, child support orders, and related documents. These records are usually accessible to the public, though some courts restrict certain sensitive information. Divorce records show the division of property, custody arrangements, support obligations, and the final decree. Custody and support modification records track changes to existing orders.

Administrative and specialized court records include landlord-tenant matters, traffic citations, small claims, and other specialized proceedings. These records are generally public and searchable. Traffic records show citations, violations, and outcomes. Landlord-tenant records document eviction cases and related disputes.

Practical takeaway: Think about what category your case falls into, then focus your search on that court type, since different courts maintain different types of records in different formats.

Payment methods vary by location but typically include cash, check, or credit card.
