Understanding iPhone Purchase Programs and Options

When shopping for an iPhone, you have several ways to purchase beyond simply paying the full price upfront. This guide explains the different programs and purchase methods available through major carriers and retailers. Understanding these options helps you make informed decisions about which path works best for your situation.

The main iPhone purchase methods include carrier upgrade programs, device payment plans, outright purchases, and refurbished phone options. Each method has different requirements, costs, and terms. Carriers like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and others offer their own versions of upgrade programs. Retailers including Best Buy, Walmart, and Target also sell iPhones with various purchasing structures. Apple itself offers multiple ways to buy directly through their stores and website.

As of 2024, the average iPhone costs between $800 and $1,600 depending on the model and storage capacity. The iPhone 15 starts at $799, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max reaches $1,199. These full retail prices represent what you might pay if purchasing without any program or discount. However, most people don't pay the full retail price upfront because they use carrier programs or payment plans.

Device payment plans allow you to spread the cost over 24 to 36 months, typically with no interest charged. For example, if you finance a $999 iPhone over 36 months, your monthly payment would be around $28. This makes the purchase more manageable for monthly budgets. Understanding the terms of each payment plan matters because some plans have trade-in requirements, while others don't.

Practical takeaway: Before visiting a carrier store or retailer, determine your budget for a monthly device payment. Knowing whether you can afford $25 to $40 monthly for a phone helps you narrow down which purchase method works for your situation.

Carrier Upgrade Programs and How They Work

The major wireless carriers—Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and smaller carriers like US Cellular—each operate their own device upgrade programs. These programs let customers trade in older phones and receive credit toward a new iPhone. The programs differ in their specific terms, but the basic concept is the same: exchange an old device for value, use that value to reduce the cost of a new phone, and spread remaining costs over monthly payments.

Verizon's program, called Verizon's device payment option, allows customers to pay for phones over 24 months. When you're ready to upgrade (typically after 24 months), you can trade in your current phone. The trade-in value depends on the condition and model of your phone. A well-maintained iPhone 14 might be worth $250 to $350 in trade-in value, while an older iPhone 11 might be worth $75 to $150. This trade-in value is applied as a credit toward the new phone purchase.

AT&T offers a similar program called AT&T Next or their device payment plan. Customers pay a set monthly amount for 30 months to own the phone outright, or they can make early upgrade payments that allow switching to a new device after 12 months. If you switch phones after 12 months, you return the older phone and begin payments on the new one. This structure means you're never responsible for the full remaining balance of an old phone if you upgrade.

T-Mobile's approach includes their Equipment Installment Plan, where customers pay for the phone over 24 months with zero interest. You can trade in your old phone regardless of when it was purchased or where you originally bought it. T-Mobile also offers promotions periodically that provide bill credits when you trade in a phone and switch to their service or upgrade an existing line.

Trade-in values depend on several factors: the phone model, storage capacity, age, physical condition (cracks, dents, water damage), and whether the phone functions properly. Apple iPhones generally hold their value better than many Android phones. A phone in excellent condition typically receives 70-85% of the offered trade-in value, while phones with significant damage may receive only 30-50% of stated value. Carriers inspect phones at the point of trade-in to determine final value.

Practical takeaway: Contact your current carrier and ask specifically what they would offer for trading in your current phone toward an iPhone 15. This actual quote helps you understand the real out-of-pocket cost you'd face, not just the advertised full retail price.

Understanding Device Payment Plans and Monthly Costs

Device payment plans represent how most people purchase new iPhones today. These plans break the cost of a phone into monthly installments, spreading the price over two to three years. The appeal of payment plans lies in their manageable monthly costs and the ability to keep your phone after payments end. This differs from leasing programs where you return the device at the end of the lease term.

A typical device payment plan works like this: You purchase an iPhone with a retail price of $899. The total is divided by the number of months (usually 24 or 36), resulting in a monthly payment of around $37 for 24 months or $25 for 36 months. Some carriers charge interest on device payments, while others offer interest-free financing. As of 2024, most major carriers offer zero-interest device payments, making the monthly cost predictable and straightforward.

When you make a payment plan purchase, your credit is checked, and you may need to meet certain account requirements. For example, you might need to have an active service account with that carrier for a minimum time period, have no past-due balances, and maintain good account standing. These requirements vary by carrier. If your credit history is limited or shows issues, some carriers might ask for a down payment before financing the full device cost.

Down payments on device purchases range from $0 to $200, depending on the carrier and phone model. A larger down payment reduces your monthly payment amount. For example, putting $100 down on that $899 iPhone reduces the amount being financed to $799, which means your monthly payment drops from $37 to about $33 (over 24 months). Down payments are optional on most carriers, but some promotions require them.

One important consideration: if you want to change carriers or cancel service before finishing your device payments, you remain responsible for paying off the remaining balance. This is considered a separate obligation from your service contract. If you owe $300 in remaining device payments and leave that carrier, you'll be billed for that $300 by the carrier or sent to a collections agency if left unpaid.

Practical takeaway: Calculate your total monthly cost by adding your device payment amount to your service plan cost. If your service is $60 monthly and your device payment is $35 monthly, your total is $95 monthly. This total represents your ongoing commitment and helps you budget accurately.

Refurbished and Used iPhone Options

Purchasing a refurbished or used iPhone offers significant cost savings compared to buying new. A refurbished iPhone typically costs 20-40% less than a new model, while used phones from private sellers can cost even less. Understanding what "refurbished" means and where to source these phones safely is important for making a good purchasing decision.

Refurbished iPhones are phones that have been returned to manufacturers or carriers, typically for warranty claims or upgrades. These phones are tested, repaired if necessary, cleaned, and resold with a warranty. Manufacturer refurbished phones (those handled by Apple) carry the strongest guarantees. Carrier refurbished phones (those handled by Verizon, AT&T, etc.) also have warranties but may be shorter in duration. Retailer refurbished phones from Best Buy or other shops typically include 90-day to one-year warranties.

For example, an iPhone 14 with 128GB storage costs $699 when new but might cost $500-550 when purchased refurbished. An iPhone 13 refurbished might cost $400-450, down from its original $599 retail price. These savings add up, especially if you purchase a device payment plan rather than paying cash. Financing a $500 refurbished phone at $21 monthly is more manageable than financing a new phone at $35 monthly.

Where you buy refurbished phones matters significantly. Apple's refurbished store offers phones that have been restored to original condition and come with a one-year warranty and return period matching new phones. Carrier refurbished phones sold directly through Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile stores come
