Understanding Texas Driving Records and What They Contain

A Texas driving record is an official document maintained by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) that contains information about your driving history. This record tracks various details related to your activities behind the wheel, including traffic violations, accidents, license suspensions, and other driving-related incidents. Understanding what appears on your record is important because many organizations—employers, insurance companies, and lending institutions—may request to see this information.

Your Texas driving record typically includes your personal information such as your name, date of birth, driver's license number, and address. It also contains a complete history of traffic violations you've received, including speeding tickets, running red lights, reckless driving charges, and DWI convictions. The record shows accident information where you were involved, noting whether you were at fault. Additionally, it documents any administrative actions taken against your license, such as suspensions, revocations, or restrictions. Points assigned to violations also appear on the record, as Texas uses a point system where violations carry different point values.

The length of time violations appear on your driving record varies. Most traffic violations remain on your record for three years from the date of conviction. However, some serious violations like DWI convictions may stay longer—typically five years or more. Accidents generally appear for three to five years depending on the circumstances. Understanding this timeline helps you know when certain incidents will stop affecting your record.

Texas driving records are used by insurance companies to determine your rates, by employers who want to verify driving safety for certain positions, and by courts when making decisions about licensing. Your own record may also be requested when you move to another state or when applying for certain types of employment.

Practical Takeaway: Before requesting your record, consider why you need it. Different organizations may request different levels of detail, and knowing what information you're looking for helps you understand what you'll find.

How to Request Your Texas Driving Record Online

The Texas Department of Public Safety offers an online system for obtaining your driving record without visiting a physical location. This online method is one of the most straightforward ways to get your record and can be completed from any computer with internet access. The DPS website provides a dedicated portal where you can request either a copy of your driving record for your own personal records or authorize the DPS to send it directly to a third party such as an employer or insurance company.

To request your record online, you'll need to visit the official Texas DPS website. The process begins by navigating to their driving records section and selecting the type of record you need. Texas offers several record types: a personal record (for your own use), an employer record (sent to your employer), and certified copies (official documents with the DPS seal). Each type serves different purposes and may have different fees associated with it.

During the online request process, you'll need to provide personal identifying information to verify your identity. This typically includes your driver's license number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, your date of birth, and your Texas driver's license number if you have one. Some systems may also require you to answer security questions based on your personal history. This verification step protects your privacy by ensuring only authorized individuals can obtain your driving record.

The online system accepts payment through various methods, usually including credit cards, debit cards, and electronic bank transfers. Fees vary depending on the type of record and how quickly you need it. Standard processing typically takes three to five business days, while expedited options may be available for an additional fee. The system will provide you with a confirmation number and estimated delivery date.

One advantage of the online system is that you receive your record electronically, often via email or through a downloadable link. This means you can view and save the document immediately without waiting for physical mail. For situations where you need to show proof to an employer or insurance company quickly, this electronic delivery can be particularly useful.

Practical Takeaway: When requesting your record online, have your driver's license and Social Security number ready, and decide whether you need a personal copy or if the DPS should send it directly to another organization.

Obtaining Your Driving Record by Mail or in Person

While online options are convenient, Texas also allows you to request your driving record through traditional methods—by mail or by visiting a DPS office in person. These methods may take longer than online requests but don't require internet access or comfort with digital systems. Some people prefer these methods because they result in official certified documents that arrive in your hands directly.

To request your record by mail, you'll need to send a written request to the Texas Department of Public Safety along with payment. The request should include your full name, date of birth, driver's license number, and the type of record you're requesting. You'll also need to specify how many certified or uncertified copies you want. Payment can typically be made by check or money order. The mailing address and specific instructions appear on the official DPS website. Standard mail processing typically takes seven to ten business days from when the DPS receives your request, not including mail transit time in both directions.

For in-person requests, you can visit any Texas DPS office. These offices are located throughout the state in most major cities and many smaller towns. To find the office nearest you, the DPS website provides a searchable location directory with hours of operation and services offered. When you visit in person, bring a valid form of identification and cash or a check for payment. The benefit of visiting in person is that you may be able to receive your record more quickly—sometimes on the same day, depending on how busy the office is and what type of record you're requesting.

Both mail and in-person methods produce official certified copies of your driving record, which carry the official seal of the Texas Department of Public Safety. These certified copies are often required by courts, for legal proceedings, or when employers need official verification. Uncertified copies, which may be obtained through online or mail requests at a lower cost, are suitable for personal reference but may not be accepted in situations requiring official documentation.

Processing times and fees differ depending on whether you request a certified copy, an uncertified copy, or a record to be sent to a third party. Certified copies typically cost more but are valid legal documents. When visiting an office in person, having all necessary information ready will speed up the process and avoid additional trips.

Practical Takeaway: Choose mail or in-person requests if you need an official certified copy for legal purposes, or if you don't have internet access. Plan ahead for processing time if you need your record by a specific date.

What to Expect When You Receive Your Driving Record

Once you receive your Texas driving record, whether online or in paper form, understanding how to read it is important. Your driving record is organized chronologically, typically with the most recent incidents listed first. At the top of the document, you'll find your personal information including your full name, date of birth, driver's license number, and current address on file with the DPS.

The body of the record lists each traffic violation or accident you've had. For each entry, you'll see the date of the violation, the location where it occurred, the type of violation (such as speeding, failure to stop, or at-fault accident), any points assigned to that violation, and the disposition or outcome. The disposition tells you whether you were convicted, whether the case was dismissed, or whether you completed a traffic safety course that reduced the violation's impact.

Points appear next to each violation. Texas uses a point system where minor violations might carry two or three points, while more serious violations carry more points. For example, a speeding ticket might be three points, while a reckless driving conviction might be four points. The record typically shows your total points. If you accumulate too many points in a certain time period—usually 12 points in a 12-month period—your license may be suspended or you may face other penalties.

If you see administrative actions on your record, these indicate when your license has been suspended, revoked, or restricted. These entries show the reason for the action, the dates it was in effect, and whether it has been cleared or is still active. A suspended license means you cannot legally drive during the suspension period. A revocation is more serious and means you must reapply and may need to meet certain conditions to have your license reinstated.

Your record also shows accident history. Entries for accidents include the date, location, whether you were deemed at fault, and any injuries or damage reported. Even accidents where you weren't at fault may appear on your record for information purposes, though they don't affect your points or license status in the same way that at-fault accidents do
