Understanding TSA PreCheck and What It Offers
TSA PreCheck is a United States government program that provides expedited security screening at airport checkpoints. The program is managed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), a division of the Department of Homeland Security. When you participate in TSA PreCheck, you move through a dedicated security lane at participating airports, where screening procedures are streamlined compared to standard checkpoint procedures.

The program currently operates at more than 200 airports across the United States. Participating airports include major hubs like Los Angeles International, New York's LaGuardia, Chicago O'Hare, and Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson, as well as many regional airports. According to TSA data, over 13 million people currently hold active TSA PreCheck memberships.
When you use TSA PreCheck, you typically keep your shoes, belt, and light jacket on during screening. You can leave laptops and compliant liquids in your carry-on bag. Metal detectors used in PreCheck lanes have advanced technology that reduces false alarms. The program is designed to reduce wait times at security checkpoints—average PreCheck screening takes about 5 minutes compared to 20-30 minutes in standard lanes during peak travel times.
TSA PreCheck membership is valid for five years from the date of approval. The program costs $78 to $85 depending on how you pay, though various discounts and fee waivers may reduce this cost. Some credit card companies offer statement credits that cover part or all of the fee. Military members, TSA officers, and certain other groups may pay reduced rates or nothing at all.
Takeaway: TSA PreCheck is a membership program offering faster airport security screening at over 200 U.S. airports, valid for five years, with membership fees typically between $78 and $85.
How the TSA PreCheck Application and Appointment Process Works
The TSA PreCheck process involves several steps spread across weeks. Understanding each phase helps you prepare documents and schedule your time effectively. The process begins online, continues with an in-person appointment, and concludes with a decision from TSA.

First, you create an account on the official TSA PreCheck enrollment website. You provide basic information including your name, date of birth, contact details, and citizenship status. The online form also asks about your travel frequency and reasons for wanting PreCheck. This initial step takes about 15-20 minutes and has no fee.
After completing the online questionnaire, you receive a conditional approval notification. This doesn't mean you're accepted—it means TSA has reviewed your initial information and you can proceed to schedule an in-person appointment. You'll receive instructions on how to book your appointment at one of approximately 500 enrollment centers across the country.
Enrollment centers are located at airports, post offices, and other authorized locations. You select a date and time that works for your schedule. Current average wait times for appointments range from same-day to several weeks depending on your location. During your appointment, a TSA officer collects your biographic and biometric information, which includes fingerprinting. The appointment typically lasts 10-15 minutes.
After your appointment, TSA reviews all your information, conducts background checks, and makes a final determination. This review period typically takes 3-5 business days, though it can occasionally take longer. You receive notification of the decision by email. If approved, your membership begins immediately, and you receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) that you use when booking flights.
Takeaway: The TSA PreCheck process includes an online application, scheduling an in-person appointment, attending that appointment for fingerprinting and verification, and then waiting for final TSA determination—a total timeline of typically 2-4 weeks.
What Documents and Information You'll Need to Bring
Preparation for your in-person appointment is essential. Bringing the correct documents ensures your appointment runs smoothly and prevents delays. TSA has specific requirements about what forms of identification and documentation you must provide.

A valid government-issued photo ID is required. Acceptable forms include a valid passport, driver's license, state ID card, military ID, or passport card. Your ID must not be expired. If you have a passport, bringing it is particularly useful because it contains extensive personal information that can speed up the appointment process. If you're a U.S. citizen but your passport is expired, you can still use an unexpired driver's license or state ID.
You'll also need to bring proof of citizenship or lawful permanent resident status. U.S. citizens can bring their passport, birth certificate, or naturalization certificate. Permanent residents need their green card. If you were born outside the U.S., a birth certificate alone isn't sufficient—you need a passport, passport card, or naturalization certificate. Some people bring multiple documents to cover this requirement.
Bring proof of your current address. This can be a recent utility bill, lease agreement, mortgage statement, or bank statement showing your name and address. The document typically must be dated within the last 60 days. If you've recently moved, bring a document showing your new address, even if it's recent.
You'll also need to provide information about your travel history and any previous legal issues. The online application asks about this, but bring documentation if you have relevant history. This might include details about military service, previous government employment, or travel dates for certain countries. Bring your Social Security number, though you may have already provided it online.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your arms for fingerprinting. You won't need to remove clothing at the enrollment appointment, but your sleeves should roll up easily. Avoid heavily layered clothing that makes access to your arms difficult.
Takeaway: Bring a valid government-issued photo ID, proof of citizenship or permanent resident status, proof of current address dated within 60 days, and any documentation related to your travel history or military service.
Finding TSA PreCheck Enrollment Centers Near You
Locating a convenient enrollment center is one of the first practical steps. TSA PreCheck appointments happen only at designated enrollment centers, not at regular airport security checkpoints. Finding available locations and appointment times requires using the official TSA scheduling system.

The official TSA PreCheck website contains a search tool for enrollment centers. You enter your city, state, or ZIP code, and the system displays all enrollment centers within a certain radius. Results show the center location, address, hours of operation, and current availability for appointments. Many major cities have multiple enrollment centers, giving you options for convenience.
Enrollment centers are found at several types of locations. Airport enrollment centers exist at major airports—you can schedule an appointment at an airport even if you're not traveling that day. Post offices with enrollment services offer appointments at many USPS locations nationwide. Some police departments, sheriff's offices, and other government agencies operate enrollment centers. A few private security companies and vehicle registration locations also offer TSA PreCheck enrollment services.
When searching for an enrollment center, you'll see the specific hours of operation. Some centers are open weekdays only, while others have weekend hours. Hours vary significantly by location—some centers open early and close early, while others operate evening hours. If you work standard business hours, looking for a center with extended or weekend hours can help you find a time that works.
Appointment availability varies greatly by location. In rural areas or small cities, you might have only one enrollment center with limited appointment slots, potentially resulting in a wait of several weeks. In major metropolitan areas, multiple enrollment centers often have availability within days or even same-day appointments. The system shows you exactly what dates and times are available when you search.
Some people choose enrollment centers outside their home area—for example, enrolling at an airport you're traveling to anyway, or visiting an enrollment center in a nearby city with more availability. This can reduce your total wait time. You can complete your online application from anywhere and schedule an appointment at any enrollment center in the country.
Takeaway: Use the official TSA PreCheck website search tool to find enrollment centers by location, compare hours and availability, and book an appointment at a center that fits your schedule—options include airports, post offices, police departments, and other authorized locations.
