How to Cancel Your Audible Subscription Guide
Understanding Your Audible Subscription and Why You Might Cancel
Audible is a subscription service owned by Amazon that provides access to audiobooks, podcasts, and other audio content. Members pay a monthly fee, typically around $14.95 per month in the United States, to receive credits that can be used to purchase audiobooks and access certain podcast content. Understanding what you're paying for each month is the first step toward making an informed decision about whether to continue your subscription.

Many subscribers find they no longer use the service for various reasons. Some discover they prefer reading physical books, while others find they don't have time to listen to audiobooks during their daily routine. Some subscribers realize they've accumulated more audiobooks than they can reasonably listen to in a reasonable timeframe. Others may be working through financial constraints and looking to reduce recurring expenses. There's no judgment involved in canceling a subscription that no longer serves your needs.
Before canceling, you may want to consider what will happen to your audiobook collection. When you cancel an Audible subscription, the audiobooks you've purchased remain tied to your account. However, if you're using the Audible app or downloading content through their platform, you'll lose access to listen to those books once your subscription ends. This is an important distinction to understand before making your final decision.
Some subscribers choose to pause their membership rather than fully cancel. Audible offers a membership pause feature that temporarily suspends your subscription for up to three months without losing your account information or audiobook collection. This option might work for someone who thinks they'll want to resume listening in the future but needs a break from the monthly charge.
Practical takeaway: Before canceling, list out why you're considering cancellation and how many audiobooks you actively listen to each month. This reflection helps you decide whether full cancellation, pausing, or changing your plan tier makes the most sense for your situation.
Steps to Cancel Your Audible Account Through the Website
The most straightforward way to cancel your Audible subscription is through the website using your computer or mobile browser. Start by going to audible.com and signing into your account with your email address and password. Once you're logged in, look for the account menu, usually located in the upper right corner of the screen where your profile picture or name appears.

From the account menu, select "Account Details" or "Membership." This takes you to your account settings page. On this page, you should see information about your current membership plan, including the renewal date and the amount you're charged each month. Look for a section labeled "Membership" or "Plan Details." Within this section, there should be an option to manage your membership or cancel.
Click on the option to cancel or end membership. Audible may present you with several retention options at this point. These could include offering you a discount on your next month's subscription or suggesting that you pause your membership instead. You don't have to accept these offers—you can proceed with cancellation if that's what you've decided.
The website will likely ask you to confirm the reason why you're canceling. Audible presents a multiple-choice list of reasons, such as "I don't listen to books anymore," "It costs too much," or "I prefer other services." Select the reason that best matches your situation. This feedback helps Audible understand why subscribers are leaving, though your answer doesn't affect whether your cancellation goes through.
After confirming your reason, you'll be asked to confirm that you want to cancel. Read any final message from Audible, then confirm your cancellation request. You should receive a confirmation message indicating that your subscription will end on a specific date. Save this confirmation or take a screenshot for your records.
Practical takeaway: Complete the cancellation process when you have time to read through all screens carefully. Don't rush through the steps, as you want to make sure you're confirming actual cancellation and not just pausing your account or changing your plan.
Canceling Through the Audible Mobile App
If you prefer to manage your subscription through the Audible mobile app on your phone or tablet, you can cancel there as well. Open the Audible app and look for the profile or account icon, usually located at the bottom right of the screen. Tap on this icon to access your account settings.

Look for an option labeled "Account Settings," "Membership," or "Manage Membership." The exact wording varies slightly depending on whether you're using the iOS or Android version of the app, but the functionality is similar on both platforms. Tap on this option to view your membership details.
You should see information about your current membership plan and the date your next billing cycle begins. Find the option to manage, change, or cancel your membership. This might be labeled as "End Membership," "Cancel Subscription," or "Manage Plan." Tap on this option.
The app will walk you through a series of screens asking about your cancellation. You may be offered alternatives such as pausing your membership or switching to a lower-cost plan before you reach the final cancellation screen. If you're certain about your decision to cancel, continue through these screens without selecting any alternative options.
You'll likely be asked to confirm your reason for canceling by selecting from a provided list. After providing this feedback, you'll be asked to confirm your final cancellation request. Once you confirm, the app should display a message confirming that your membership will end on a specific date.
One important note: if you're an iOS user, Apple handles some subscription management through their App Store settings. If you subscribed to Audible through Apple's in-app purchase system, you may need to cancel through your Apple ID settings rather than through the Audible app itself. You can do this by going to Settings, tapping on your Apple ID, selecting "Subscriptions," and then finding and canceling Audible from that menu.
Practical takeaway: Note which device you're using when you cancel, as the process differs slightly between iOS, Android, and the web. If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play Store, you may need to cancel through that platform instead of directly through Audible.
What Happens to Your Books and Account After Cancellation
A common concern when canceling an Audible subscription is what happens to the audiobooks you've purchased. The important thing to understand is that purchased audiobooks are yours to keep. They don't disappear from your account when you cancel your subscription. Your Audible account remains active, and your purchase history is preserved.

However, there's an important limitation: while you own your audiobooks, you can only listen to them through the Audible app or through authorized devices. If you download the audiobooks to your device while you still have an active subscription, you can continue listening to them after your subscription ends, but only for a limited time. Audible's system requires periodic verification that you still own the content, even for downloaded files.
If you want to re-subscribe in the future, you can do so at any time. Your previous audiobook collection will still be there, accessible through your account. You won't lose any of your purchases by canceling and later resubscribing. This means canceling doesn't carry a permanent penalty if you change your mind later.
Credits that you haven't used yet are treated differently than purchased books. If you have unused monthly credits in your account at the time of cancellation, those credits are generally forfeited. For this reason, you might consider using any remaining credits to purchase additional audiobooks before you finalize your cancellation. This way, you maximize the value you've already paid for.
Your Audible account login information remains the same after cancellation. You can log back into your account at any time through the Audible website or app. You'll be able to see your library of purchased audiobooks, your wishlist, and your reading history. You simply won't be able to purchase new audiobooks or use new credits until you resubscribe.
Practical takeaway: Before canceling, check your account for unused credits. If you have credits available, purchase audiobooks you're interested in before finalizing your cancellation, since unused credits disappear when you cancel.
Considering Alternatives Before Full Cancellation
Audible offers several options that might make more sense than full cancellation, depending on your situation. The membership pause feature is one option worth considering. With a pause, you can temporarily suspend your subscription for up to three months at a time. Your account remains open, your audiobook collection stays accessible, and your billing stops during the pause
