How to Change Language on Your Samsung Device

Understanding Language Settings on Samsung Devices

Samsung devices come with language settings that control how your phone or tablet displays text, menus, and system notifications. When you first set up your Samsung device, you choose an initial language, but you can change this selection at any time. The language setting affects nearly everything on your device—from the operating system interface to app menus and keyboard layouts.

Samsung devices typically support between 70 and 90 different languages, depending on your device model and Android version. Common languages include English, Spanish, French, German, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, and many others. Some regional variants are also available, such as English (United States), English (United Kingdom), and Spanish (Spain) versus Spanish (Mexico).

Your device's language setting is separate from your keyboard language and your regional settings. This means you can have your system menus display in one language while your keyboard types in another. Understanding this distinction helps you customize your device to match your actual usage patterns. For instance, someone might use an English system interface but prefer a Spanish keyboard for typing messages to family members.

The language you select also affects predictive text suggestions, voice assistant responses, and spell-check features. If you use Samsung's voice assistant Bixby, changing your language setting will change the language Bixby recognizes and responds to. Similarly, text prediction and autocorrect will function based on your selected language's dictionary and grammar rules.

Practical Takeaway: Before changing your language, consider whether you want to change only the system interface or also your keyboard and voice input methods. This planning prevents confusion during setup and ensures your device works the way you actually use it.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Recent Samsung Models

The process for changing language on Samsung devices running Android 11 and newer is consistent across most models, including the Galaxy S21, S22, S23, Galaxy A series, and Galaxy Tab devices. The Settings app houses all language controls in one organized location. To begin, unlock your device and locate the Settings app, which typically appears as a gear icon on your home screen or in your app drawer.

Once you open Settings, scroll down until you find the "General management" option. This section contains device-wide settings that affect how your Samsung device operates. Tap on "General management" to expand this menu. Inside, you'll see several options including "Language and input," "Device care," and "About phone." The "Language and input" option is what you need to change your system language.

When you tap "Language and input," the first option you'll see is "Languages." This is where you select your system language. Tap on "Languages," and a complete list of available languages will appear. The list is organized alphabetically, making it straightforward to locate your preferred language. If you select a language that uses a non-Latin alphabet—such as Arabic, Russian, or Chinese—you may see a note indicating that this change will update your entire system interface.

After selecting your language, your device will apply the change, which usually takes just a few seconds. Your home screen, menus, settings, notifications, and most installed apps will now display in your chosen language. Some third-party apps may not change immediately if they have their own language settings, but the Samsung system interface and built-in apps will reflect your selection right away.

Practical Takeaway: Write down the path (Settings > General management > Language and input > Languages) before making changes, so you can reverse the process quickly if you accidentally select an unfamiliar language and need to navigate back to settings.

Language Settings on Older Samsung Models

Samsung devices running Android 10 or earlier use a slightly different path to access language settings, though the basic concept remains the same. These devices include Galaxy S10, S9, S8, and earlier Galaxy flagships, as well as older Galaxy A and Galaxy Tab models. On these devices, the language setting is typically located directly in the main Settings menu rather than nested under "General management."

To change the language on an older Samsung device, open Settings and look for an option labeled simply "Language" or "Language and input." On some Android 10 devices, you may see this option near the top of the Settings menu under "System" or "Advanced features," depending on your specific model. The exact menu structure varies slightly between manufacturers' custom interfaces, but Samsung's approach has remained relatively consistent over the years.

When you find the language option on an older device, the selection process is identical to newer models—you'll see an alphabetized list of languages, and tapping your choice will apply it system-wide. The change typically takes effect within seconds. However, older devices with less RAM or storage may take slightly longer to process this change, and you may notice a brief pause as the system reloads your interface in the new language.

One important note about older devices: if your Samsung phone or tablet is running Android 9 or earlier, some Samsung-specific apps may not change their language immediately after you update your system language. This occurs because older versions of Samsung's app framework didn't always sync automatically with system language changes. If you notice this issue, you can typically force an update by opening the Samsung Galaxy Apps store, navigating to each app's settings, and selecting your language preference within that individual app.

Practical Takeaway: If you own an older Samsung device and experience language display issues after making changes, try restarting your device, which forces the system to reload all language settings. This simple step resolves most display problems in Android 10 and earlier versions.

Managing Multiple Languages and Input Methods

Samsung devices allow you to set multiple languages for input without changing your entire system interface. This feature is valuable if you communicate in several languages regularly. For example, you might want your system menus in English but need the ability to type in Spanish, Mandarin, and Arabic. These are separate settings from your system language, and they work together to create a fully customized experience.

To add additional keyboard languages, go to Settings > General management > Language and input, then select "On-screen keyboard" or "Keyboards." Samsung typically includes its own keyboard app called Samsung Keyboard, though your device may have alternative keyboard options like Google Keyboard or Gboard. Once you select your keyboard app, you'll see an option to add languages. You can usually enable multiple languages, and your keyboard will allow you to switch between them using a language toggle button that appears while you're typing.

The process for switching between keyboard languages while typing varies depending on which keyboard app you use. With Samsung Keyboard, you typically press a globe icon or language button to cycle through your enabled languages. With Google's Gboard, you can swipe on the spacebar to switch languages, or tap the language indicator. Each keyboard has its own switching mechanism, so spending a few minutes experimenting with your keyboard will show you how to access each language quickly.

You can also set up voice input in multiple languages. When you use voice-to-text features, your device can recognize speech in the language you've selected for your microphone input. This setting is found in the same Language and input menu under "Voice input" or "Speech recognition." Some users prefer to keep their voice input in one language while their keyboard supports multiple languages, since switching voice languages mid-sentence can confuse the speech recognition system.

Practical Takeaway: If you regularly use multiple languages, enable just the two or three you use most frequently in your keyboard settings. Having too many keyboard languages enabled can make the switching mechanism cumbersome, and it may reduce the accuracy of predictive text features.

Region, Date, and Time Format Adjustments

Language selection on your Samsung device controls what language your interface uses, but separate settings control how your device displays dates, times, and currency amounts. These regional settings are often overlooked but significantly affect your device's usability. For instance, you might want your system language as English, but prefer dates displayed in DD/MM/YYYY format (common in most countries outside the United States) rather than MM/DD/YYYY format.

To adjust regional settings on newer Samsung devices, go to Settings > General management > Language and input, then look for an option called "Region" or "Regional settings." This menu lets you select your country or region independently from your system language. When you select a region, your device automatically adjusts date formats, time displays (12-hour or 24-hour), default currency symbols, and measurement units (kilometers versus miles, for example) to match that region's standard conventions.
