How To Change Your Amazon Account Phone Number

Understanding Why You Might Need to Update Your Phone Number

Your phone number is one of the most important pieces of information linked to your Amazon account. Amazon uses this number for several critical purposes, including sending you security codes when you sign in from new devices, notifying you about orders and deliveries, and allowing customer service to contact you if there are questions about your purchases or account.

People need to update their phone number for various reasons. You might have switched to a new phone carrier and received a different number. Perhaps you're moving to a new area code or a different country. Some customers change their phone number to reduce unwanted marketing calls. Others need to update after their previous number was disconnected or reassigned.

It's also common for people to want to add a backup phone number to their account. This provides an extra layer of security and ensures Amazon can reach you through multiple channels. Having a secondary number can prevent account lockouts if your primary phone becomes unavailable.

The timing of this update matters because during the transition period, Amazon's security systems may send verification codes to your old number. Understanding this process helps prevent confusion and account access issues. If you're planning to disconnect your old phone service, updating your Amazon number beforehand is the best approach.

Practical Takeaway: Before you change phone carriers or disconnect your current phone service, update your Amazon account information. This prevents potential delays in receiving security codes or order notifications.

Step-by-Step Process for Changing Your Phone Number on Desktop

The process for updating your phone number through a desktop computer or laptop is straightforward and takes only a few minutes. Start by visiting Amazon.com and signing into your account using your email address and password. Look for the "Account" option, which typically appears in the upper right corner of the page in a dropdown menu. You may need to hover over or click on your account name to reveal this menu.

Once you've accessed the Account menu, locate the "Login & security" option. This section contains all the security-related settings for your account, including your phone number information. Click on "Login & security" to enter this settings area. The page will display various security options, including a section labeled "Phone number" or "Mobile number."

Next to your current phone number, you should see an "Edit" button or link. Click this button to begin the editing process. Amazon will ask you to enter your new phone number in the format it specifies—typically including the country code, area code, and the seven-digit phone number. For numbers within the United States, this usually means entering the country code (+1) followed by your area code and number.

After entering your new number, Amazon may send a verification code to that phone number via text message or voice call. You'll need to enter this code back into the website to confirm that you own the number. This verification step protects your account by ensuring that only authorized people can change critical account information. Once you enter the correct verification code, Amazon updates your phone number immediately.

Practical Takeaway: Keep your new phone nearby when making this change so you can receive and enter the verification code right away. This completes the process without unnecessary delays.

Updating Your Phone Number Through the Amazon Mobile App

If you prefer to manage your account through your smartphone or tablet, you can update your phone number using the official Amazon mobile app. This method works on both iPhones with iOS and Android devices. Begin by opening the Amazon app and signing in with your credentials if you're not already logged in. The app remembers your login information for convenience, but you may need to verify your identity for security-sensitive changes.

Look for the menu icon, typically represented by three horizontal lines (often called a "hamburger menu"), usually located in the bottom right corner of the app on most devices. Tap this icon to open the main menu. Scroll down through the menu options until you find "Your Account" or "Account Settings." This may appear near the bottom of the menu.

Within the account settings, locate the "Login & security" section—the same area you would access on a desktop. Tap on it to view your current security settings. Find the "Phone number" section and tap the "Edit" option next to your current number. You'll see a text field where you can enter your new phone number. Make sure to include the country code and area code for proper formatting.

The app will prompt you to verify the new number, just like the desktop version does. A verification code will be sent to your new phone via text message. Enter this code into the app to complete the verification process. The app will display a confirmation message once the update is successful. The entire process typically takes less than five minutes from start to finish.

Practical Takeaway: The mobile app method is particularly useful if you're changing your number and want to verify it immediately on the device itself, ensuring the new number is already active and receiving messages.

Important Considerations During the Phone Number Change Process

Several important factors warrant your attention when changing your phone number on Amazon. First, understand that your old phone number remains associated with your account temporarily while Amazon processes the change. During this transition period, if Amazon needs to send you a security code or urgent notification, it may still attempt to reach your old number. This is why it's best to avoid disconnecting your old phone service immediately after making this change.

If you're changing your number because you've lost access to your old phone, contact Amazon customer service before attempting to change the number. Explain your situation to a representative. Amazon may require additional verification, such as confirming details about your recent purchases or asking security questions about your account. This protects your account from unauthorized changes.

Be aware that some Amazon services may rely on phone number verification for specific purposes. If you use Amazon Web Services (AWS) for business purposes, your phone number may be linked to billing notifications or security alerts for those services. Changing your primary account phone number may affect these notifications. Review your AWS settings separately if you have business services connected to your personal Amazon account.

International phone numbers can sometimes present formatting challenges. If you're moving to a different country, research the correct format for phone numbers in that region. Many countries have different area code structures than the United States. Amazon's system will guide you through the format, but having the correct information beforehand prevents errors.

Practical Takeaway: Keep your old phone number active for at least 24 hours after updating your Amazon account information. This buffer period allows any in-transit communications to reach you and prevents account access problems.

What to Do If You Can't Verify Your New Phone Number

Occasionally, the verification code fails to arrive on your new phone number. This can happen for several reasons. Your new phone may not be receiving text messages properly due to carrier settings, network issues, or the phone plan not including text messaging capability. If you're using a voice-over-internet (VoIP) service or a Google Voice number, these services sometimes have delays or don't receive verification codes properly. Additionally, if you recently switched carriers, there may be a brief delay before your new number fully activates on the carrier's network.

If the verification code doesn't arrive within a few minutes, first check that you entered your phone number correctly during the update process. Even a single digit error prevents the code from reaching you. Go back and review what you entered. Some Amazon pages allow you to edit the number before submitting the verification request. Make corrections if needed and request a new verification code.

Most verification systems offer alternative options if text messaging fails. Look for a link or button that says "Call me instead" or "Send verification code via voice call." Choosing this option directs Amazon to call your new number and read the verification code to you over the phone. This method often succeeds when text messages fail. Have a pen and paper ready to write down the code as it's read to you.

If both text and voice methods fail to deliver the code, you may need to contact Amazon customer service. Visit the Amazon Help & Customer Service page and select the option to contact support. Explain that you're unable to verify a phone number change. A customer service representative can manually verify your identity through other means, such as confirming purchase history or account details, and complete the phone number update for you.

Practical Takeaway: If verification fails on your first attempt, wait a few minutes before requesting the code again. Carrier networks sometimes experience brief delays. If issues persist, contact customer service rather than making repeated verification attempts, which may temporarily lock you out of this feature.
