How to Change Your Phone's Background Guide

Understanding Phone Backgrounds and Display Settings

Your phone's background, also called a wallpaper, is the image or color that appears on your home screen and lock screen. It's one of the first things you see when you look at your device. Most smartphones today come with several built-in background options, and you can also use your own photos or find images online.

The background is separate from your actual apps and files. Changing it doesn't affect anything on your phone except how it looks. Your apps, messages, photos, and all your data remain exactly where they are. Think of it like changing a poster on your wall—the room's contents stay the same, but the decoration changes.

Different phones have slightly different ways to change backgrounds. If you have an iPhone, the process differs from Android phones like Samsung, Google Pixel, or OnePlus. Even within Android devices, the steps may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer and which version of Android your phone runs. However, the basic concept is the same across all modern smartphones.

Understanding where to find background settings is the first step. Most phones keep this option in the Settings app or allow you to access it directly by touching and holding your home screen. The location matters because it affects how quickly you can change your background and how many options you have available to you.

You should also know that phones typically have two separate background images: one for your lock screen (what you see before you unlock your phone) and one for your home screen (what appears after you unlock it). Some people use the same image for both, while others prefer different images for each location.

Practical Takeaway: Before you start changing your background, identify which phone type you have and which screen you want to change—lock screen, home screen, or both. This will help you follow the correct steps for your specific device.

Changing Your Background on iPhone

For iPhone users, changing your background is straightforward and takes only a few moments. Apple makes this feature very accessible, offering multiple ways to make the change depending on your preference.

The most direct method involves using the Settings app. Open Settings and look for an option labeled "Wallpaper" or "Display & Brightness." Tap on this option, then select "Choose a New Wallpaper." Your phone will show you several categories: Featured, Suggested Photos, Collections, and Dynamic. Featured contains Apple's curated selections. Dynamic wallpapers move and change slightly, which some people find visually interesting. Collections organize images by theme, such as nature, abstract, or colors.

If you want to use one of your own photos instead, select "Photos" from the categories. This takes you to your photo library where you can browse and select any image you've taken or saved. Once you select an image, you'll see a preview of how it looks on your home screen. You can pinch and zoom to adjust which part of the photo you want to display, since your apps cover portions of the screen.

Another method on iPhone involves touching and holding your lock screen or home screen directly. This brings up a menu with several options. Look for "Customize" or a plus sign icon. This opens the wallpaper customization menu and is often faster than going through Settings, especially if you want to change your background frequently.

When you've selected an image and adjusted it to your liking, you'll see options asking where to apply the wallpaper. Your choices are "Lock Screen," "Home Screen," or "Both Screens." If you choose both, the same image appears on both locations. If you choose one screen, that image only applies there, and you can set a different image for the other screen at a later time.

Recent iPhone models, particularly those running iOS 16 or newer, offer additional customization. You can now create different wallpaper setups and switch between them. Some users like having a professional-looking background for their lock screen and a colorful one for their home screen, or they might change backgrounds seasonally.

Practical Takeaway: On iPhone, access wallpaper settings through Settings > Wallpaper or by holding down your home screen. Use your own photos from the Photos section, and decide whether you want the same background on both screens or different ones for each.

Changing Your Background on Android Devices

Android devices, which include phones from Samsung, Google, OnePlus, Motorola, and many other manufacturers, generally follow similar steps for changing backgrounds, though minor differences exist between brands and Android versions.

The primary method on most Android phones involves touching and holding your home screen until a menu appears. You should see an option labeled "Wallpapers," "Wallpaper Settings," or simply "Customize." Tapping this opens your wallpaper options. Some Android phones also allow you to access wallpaper settings through the Settings app by navigating to Display > Wallpaper or Themes > Wallpaper, depending on your specific device.

Once you enter the wallpaper section, Android typically shows you several sources for images. Built-in wallpapers come pre-loaded on your phone and are organized into categories like Abstract, Nature, Colors, or Google's suggested images. You can browse these and tap one to see a preview. If the preview looks good, select "Apply" or "Set Wallpaper" to confirm your choice.

To use your own photos, select the "Photos" or "Gallery" option. This opens your photo library where you can choose any image you've taken or saved. After selecting a photo, you'll typically see a preview screen where you can pinch to zoom and drag to position the image so it frames exactly what you want to display. This is especially useful if you have a photo with people or objects you want centered on your screen.

On Android, when you apply a wallpaper, you usually need to specify where it goes. Most phones ask whether you want it on your home screen, lock screen, or both. Some manufacturers also include additional screens if your phone has them, such as secondary home screens. Setting it to both screens applies the same image to all locations unless you later change one of them individually.

Samsung phones, which represent a large portion of Android users, have a dedicated Themes app where you can browse and apply wallpapers. Google Pixel phones integrate wallpaper selection into the home screen customization menu and also offer suggestions based on your photos and current season. OnePlus and Motorola phones typically use the standard Android approach of long-pressing the home screen.

Practical Takeaway: On Android, long-press your home screen to find wallpaper options, choose from built-in images or your own photos, adjust the positioning if needed, and select whether to apply it to your home screen, lock screen, or both screens.

Finding and Sourcing Quality Background Images

Your phone's background is visible multiple times every day, so choosing an image you genuinely like matters. This section covers where to find images and what to consider when selecting one.

Your own photos represent the easiest source. Most people have hundreds of photos on their phones—vacation pictures, family photos, pets, landscapes, or anything else they've captured. These personal images give your phone a unique, meaningful appearance. When using your own photos, consider the composition: images with balanced framing and clear subjects often work better than busy, cluttered pictures. A photo with people centered and in focus typically displays better than one where the main subject is small or off to the side.

Built-in wallpapers that come with your phone are carefully designed to look polished and professional. These images are created specifically to work as phone backgrounds and account for how much of the screen apps cover. They're color-coordinated to not clash with most app icons and text. Most people find several built-in options they genuinely enjoy, which makes them a good starting point if you're undecided.

If you want more options beyond what came with your phone, several websites offer free wallpaper images. Unsplash, Pexels, and Pixabay offer large collections of high-quality photos that are free to use. Search for keywords related to your interests—"forest," "ocean," "abstract," "minimalist," or anything else. Browse through the results and find images that appeal to you. Once you find one you like, save it to your phone's photo library, then set it as your wallpaper using the steps described in previous sections.

When choosing an image, consider your phone's screen size and resolution. Most modern phones have high-resolution screens that show images very clearly, which means small flaws become more visible. A slightly
