How to Delete a Friend Request on Facebook
Understanding Facebook Friend Requests and How They Work
A friend request on Facebook is a notification sent from one user to another, asking permission to connect as friends. When you send a friend request, the other person receives a notification and can choose to accept, decline, or ignore it. Until they respond, the request remains pending in their notifications. Understanding how friend requests function is the first step toward managing them effectively.

Facebook displays pending friend requests in several locations. You can view requests you've sent by going to your profile, clicking the "Friends" button, and selecting "View friend requests." The platform also shows pending requests in your notifications section. When someone receives your friend request, they see it in their notifications menu and on their profile's friend request section. This visibility means your request exists until one of three things happens: they accept it, they decline it, or you remove it yourself.
Friend requests serve as a way to initiate connections with people you know or want to know. Some users send requests to reconnect with old contacts, build professional networks, or connect with people who share interests. Other times, people may send requests hastily or to the wrong person, leading them to want to cancel the request. Facebook recognizes this need and provides a straightforward method for removing requests you've sent.
The process of deleting a friend request is different from unfriending someone. Unfriending removes an existing friend connection, while deleting a friend request cancels a pending request that hasn't been accepted yet. This distinction matters because it affects how the other person perceives the action. Canceling a pending request is less noticeable than unfriending someone who is already connected to you.
Practical takeaway: Know where to find your pending friend requests by checking your profile's Friends section or Notifications menu. This makes it easier to identify which requests you want to remove.
Reasons People Delete Friend Requests on Facebook
People delete friend requests for many practical reasons. One common scenario occurs when someone sends a request by mistake—typing a similar name in the search bar, for example, and selecting the wrong person. Rather than wait for the accidental recipient to see and decline the request, the sender removes it themselves. This prevents awkwardness and keeps the request from cluttering the other person's notifications.

Professional and personal boundaries also motivate request deletion. Someone might send a friend request to a coworker, then reconsider after thinking about whether mixing work and social media is appropriate. Similarly, people may send requests when angry or emotional, then want to withdraw them once they've had time to reflect. Deleting the request provides a way to change course without the other person being notified of the original request.
Privacy concerns lead some users to delete friend requests. If you've sent requests to accounts you're now uncertain about—perhaps fake profiles or accounts with unclear purposes—removing your own requests prevents those accounts from knowing you tried to connect. This protects your own profile visibility and keeps your friend request activity private.
Relationship changes also factor in. Someone might send a friend request to reconnect with an ex-partner or distant friend, then decide against it. Deleting the request allows them to reverse that decision before it creates complications. In online dating or social situations, people sometimes send requests and then want to retract them based on new information or changed feelings.
Additionally, users managing multiple social media accounts sometimes send requests from the wrong account. Rather than waiting for the recipient to notice the mistake, they delete the misplaced request and send a new one from the correct account. This keeps their social media connections organized and avoids confusion.
Practical takeaway: Recognizing why you want to delete a request helps you decide whether to remove it or simply let it sit in pending status. Sometimes deletion is necessary; other times, leaving it pending requires less action.
How to Delete a Friend Request You've Sent on Desktop
Deleting a friend request on Facebook through a desktop or laptop computer involves a few straightforward clicks. The most direct method is to visit your own profile and access your friend requests list. Start by clicking your profile picture in the top-right corner of Facebook's interface. This opens a menu with several options. From this menu, select "Friends" to view your friend-related options and information.

Once you're on your Friends page, look for a section or button related to friend requests. Facebook typically displays a link or icon showing the number of pending friend requests you've sent. Click on this to view all outgoing requests—the requests you've sent to other people that are still waiting for responses. This page displays thumbnail images of the people you've requested, along with buttons next to each person's name or profile.
Find the person whose friend request you want to delete. Next to their name or profile picture, you should see a button labeled "Cancel Request" or similar wording. This button may appear as text or as an icon. Click this button to immediately remove your friend request to that person. The action happens instantly, and the request is deleted from the system. The other person will not receive a notification that you canceled the request.
An alternative method on desktop involves visiting the person's profile directly. Go to the person's Facebook profile by searching for their name or clicking on their profile from wherever you see it linked (such as in search results or a mutual friend's profile). Once on their profile, look for a button that says "Cancel Request" or displays a pending status icon. Clicking this button also removes your friend request. This method works if you remember who you sent the request to and can navigate to their profile.
If you're having trouble finding the Cancel Request button, make sure you're looking at the correct person's profile and that you actually sent them a friend request. The button only appears if a pending request exists between you and that person. If they've already accepted your request, the button will say "Friends" instead, and the request no longer exists to cancel.
Practical takeaway: On desktop, access your Friends page through your profile menu, locate pending friend requests you've sent, and click "Cancel Request" next to the person's name to remove it immediately.
How to Delete a Friend Request on Mobile Devices
The Facebook mobile app for phones and tablets provides similar functionality to the desktop version, though the layout differs slightly. Start by opening the Facebook app on your iOS or Android device. Tap the menu icon (typically three horizontal lines, called a hamburger menu) located at the bottom-right corner of the screen on iOS or in the top-right corner on Android. This opens the main navigation menu.

In the menu, look for an option labeled "Friends." Tap this option to access your friends-related features. The app displays several friend-related options, including a section showing your pending friend requests. Look for text indicating how many friend requests you've sent (it may say something like "Sent requests" or show a number next to a request-related option). Tap this section to view all outgoing requests you've sent that are still pending.
Once you see your list of pending friend requests, each person should have a button or option next to their name. This button typically reads "Cancel Request" or sometimes displays as an "X" icon. Tap this button or icon to delete the friend request immediately. The request is removed instantly, and the other person receives no notification of the cancellation.
Another mobile method involves navigating directly to someone's profile. Use the search function (magnifying glass icon at the bottom of the screen) to find the person. Once their profile opens, look at the top of the profile for a button showing pending request status. This usually displays as "Cancel Request" or similar text. Tapping this button removes the request. This approach works if you remember who you sent the request to and want to delete it while viewing their profile.
On mobile devices, the exact button locations and menu structures can vary slightly between iOS and Android, and Facebook updates its app regularly. If you can't find the Cancel Request button exactly where described, look for any button on the person's profile that indicates a pending request status. The button's appearance may change with updates, but its function and location remain generally consistent.
Practical takeaway: On mobile, access Friends through the menu, find pending friend requests you've sent, and tap the "Cancel Request" button next to the person's name to remove it.
What Happens After You Delete a Friend Request
