How to Find Items Left in Your Uber
Understanding Uber's Lost and Found System
Uber maintains a dedicated lost and found process to help passengers locate items they've left in vehicles. When you take an Uber ride, your trip information is recorded in the app, which creates a direct connection between you and your driver. This system forms the foundation of how lost items are tracked and returned. Understanding how this process works can significantly increase your chances of recovering something you've forgotten.

The lost and found feature operates through the Uber app itself. Every ride you take generates a record that includes the driver's information, the vehicle details, and the route taken. This data becomes crucial when you need to contact the driver about a lost item. Unlike traditional taxi services where finding a driver might be difficult, Uber's system maintains this connection even after your ride has ended, allowing for communication between passengers and drivers about forgotten belongings.
Uber handles lost items differently depending on when you realize something is missing and how quickly you act. Items left in vehicles are initially the responsibility of the driver to manage and hold. Drivers often keep lost items in their vehicles for a period of time, hoping passengers will contact them. Some drivers turn items over to Uber's customer support team, which maintains lost and found inventory at certain locations.
The company's policy encourages drivers to hold onto lost items and wait for contact from passengers. This creates a window of opportunity—typically 24 to 72 hours is most critical—where your item is most likely still in the driver's possession. After this period, drivers may donate items, dispose of them, or turn them over to Uber support, reducing the likelihood of recovery.
Takeaway: Act quickly when you realize something is missing. The sooner you contact your driver through the app, the more likely they'll still have your item in their vehicle.
Locating Your Ride Information in the App
Finding the details about the specific ride where you left an item is the first concrete step in the recovery process. Your Uber app stores a complete history of every trip you've taken, along with all the information you need to contact your driver. Knowing how to navigate this section of the app will allow you to identify the correct ride quickly, which is essential if you take multiple rides in a day or frequently use Uber.

To access your ride history, open the Uber app and look for the menu icon, typically located in the bottom right or top left of your screen depending on your device. From there, select "Your Trips" or "Trip History." This section displays all your rides in reverse chronological order, with the most recent rides appearing first. Each ride entry shows the date, time, pickup location, and dropoff location. Scan through this list to find the ride where you believe you left your item.
Once you've identified the correct trip, tap on it to view detailed information. This screen will show you the driver's name, their vehicle information (make, model, color, and license plate), the exact route taken, and the duration of the ride. Many drivers have profile photos visible here as well. Take a screenshot or note down the driver's name and rating—this information helps if you need to escalate your search to Uber support.
If you're unsure which ride the item was lost in, consider the timeline. What time of day did you realize it was missing? Which locations did you visit that day? Working backward through your trip history with these questions in mind can help narrow down the possibilities. If you took multiple rides in a short period, check the dropoff location of each to determine which vehicle you exited from last.
Your app may also show information about whether the driver is currently active on the platform. Some drivers take breaks between trips, so checking their status can inform when you might reach them or how quickly you might expect a response.
Takeaway: Screenshot or write down the driver's name, vehicle details, and the trip time. This information becomes your reference point for all follow-up actions.
Contacting Your Driver Through the App
The most direct way to recover a lost item is to message your driver through the Uber app. This method is preferred because it creates an official record within Uber's system and ensures the communication reaches the correct person. Many drivers respond quickly to lost item inquiries, particularly within the first few hours after a ride ends, because they understand that passengers are often urgent about retrieving their belongings.

From the trip details screen, you'll see an option to contact your driver. This typically appears as a "Contact Driver" button or a messaging icon. Tap this to open a chat window where you can send a message directly to the driver who gave you that ride. Keep your message clear and specific: mention what item you left, approximately where in the vehicle it was located (backseat, cup holder, under the seat), and when the ride occurred.
An effective message might read: "Hi, I believe I left my black leather wallet in your vehicle during my ride on [date] at [time] from [pickup location] to [dropoff location]. The wallet contains my ID and several cards. If you still have it, I'd be grateful if we could arrange a time for me to pick it up." This specificity helps drivers confirm they have the right item and speeds up the process.
Drivers typically see notifications for passenger messages when they're active on the app or checking between rides. Response times vary—some drivers reply within minutes, while others may take several hours if they're between rides or offline. If your driver doesn't respond within a few hours, they may be offline for the day. You can try again later in the evening or the following day.
Be prepared to explain your availability for pickup if the driver does respond positively. Some drivers will hold items and wait for you to collect them, while others may offer to return items themselves for a small reward (which is between you and the driver to negotiate). A few drivers use their downtime to visit Uber's support offices and turn items in there, so your driver might suggest this option as well.
Takeaway: Send a specific, detailed message to your driver as soon as you realize an item is missing. Include the date, time, locations, and a clear description of what you lost.
Escalating to Uber Support When Direct Contact Fails
If your driver doesn't respond within 24 hours or indicates they don't have your item, Uber's customer support team can open a formal lost and found case. While this process takes longer than direct driver contact, it provides an official avenue for tracking your item through Uber's system. Support representatives can sometimes locate items that drivers have turned in to their offices or provide additional resources for recovery.

To contact Uber support, open the app and navigate to the menu. Look for "Help" or "Support" options, typically found near the bottom of the menu. Select the trip in question, and then choose an option related to lost items or safety. Uber's app will present you with different support categories—select the one related to lost property. You'll then have options to chat with support, call them, or submit a written request through the app.
The chat or phone option is usually faster. When you contact support, provide the same specific information you gave your driver: your trip details, a clear description of the lost item, where you last remember having it, and confirmation that you've already attempted to contact your driver. Let them know the date and time of your ride, your driver's name, and the vehicle details. Supporting details like whether the item has financial value, sentimental significance, or contains important information can help support prioritize your case.
Uber support staff will document your case and may attempt to contact your driver on your behalf. They can also check if the driver has submitted the item to an Uber lost and found location in your area. Depending on your location, Uber maintains lost item storage at certain office locations or partner facilities. Support can let you know if your item has been turned in and how to retrieve it.
The process through support typically takes 24 to 72 hours for an initial response. Support representatives will provide you with next steps, which might include arranging to pick up the item from an Uber office, waiting for the driver to contact you further, or exploring other recovery options. Document any case or reference numbers that support provides—you may need these if you need to follow up.
Takeaway: File a formal lost and found report with Uber support if your driver doesn't respond within a day. Provide complete trip and item details to help support track down your belongings.
