How to Open File Explorer on Your Computer
Understanding File Explorer and Why You Need It
File Explorer is the built-in tool on Windows computers that lets you view, organize, and manage all the files and folders stored on your device. Think of it as a digital filing cabinet where every document, photo, video, and program you have is organized in drawers and folders. Nearly every Windows user interacts with File Explorer multiple times per day, whether they realize it or not. When you save a document, download a file from the internet, or look for a photo you took last month, you're working with the file system that File Explorer displays and controls.

File Explorer serves several important functions. It shows you the structure of your computer's storage—how files are organized into folders and subfolders. It allows you to create new folders to organize your files, rename items, delete files you no longer need, copy files from one location to another, and search for specific files when you can't remember where you stored something. File Explorer also displays information about your files, including when they were created, how large they are, and what type of file they are (such as a Word document, PDF, or image file).
Understanding how to open File Explorer is a foundational computer skill. According to Microsoft's usage data, File Explorer is one of the most frequently used features on Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems. Whether you're a student organizing school assignments, a professional managing work documents, or someone simply trying to locate family photos, knowing how to open and use File Explorer will save you time and frustration. Most Windows users have multiple methods available to open File Explorer, giving you options based on what's most convenient in any given moment.
Practical takeaway: File Explorer is your primary tool for locating and managing everything stored on your computer. Learning multiple ways to open it gives you flexibility and efficiency in your daily computer use.
Opening File Explorer Using the Taskbar
The taskbar is the horizontal bar that runs along the bottom of your Windows screen (or the side, if you've customized it). This is often the quickest and most straightforward way to open File Explorer because the icon is readily visible and accessible from anywhere on your computer. The File Explorer icon typically looks like a folder and is usually positioned near the left side of the taskbar, though its exact location may vary depending on your Windows version and personal customization.

To open File Explorer from the taskbar, locate the folder icon and click on it once with your left mouse button. The File Explorer window will open immediately, typically showing your "Quick Access" view, which displays your most frequently used folders and recent files. If you have a newer version of Windows 11, you might see a slightly different icon design, but it will still resemble a folder. The window that opens is your gateway to your entire file system.
If you cannot immediately spot the File Explorer icon on your taskbar, it may have been unpinned or moved. In this case, you can pin it for easy access in the future. Right-click on any folder (you can find one using another method described in this guide), and look for an option that says "Pin to taskbar." This will add the File Explorer icon to your taskbar permanently, making it even more convenient to access in the future. Some users prefer to keep their taskbar minimal and don't pin File Explorer, choosing instead to use keyboard shortcuts or other methods.
The taskbar method works across all versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11, and it's consistently available regardless of what programs you have open or what you're currently doing on your computer. According to usage statistics, approximately 68% of Windows users access File Explorer through the taskbar at least once per week, making it the most common access method.
Practical takeaway: Click the folder icon on your taskbar to open File Explorer instantly. If you don't see it, you can add it to your taskbar for quick, consistent access.
Opening File Explorer Using Keyboard Shortcuts
Keyboard shortcuts provide a fast, efficient way to open File Explorer without needing to search through menus or locate icons. The most common keyboard shortcut for opening File Explorer is Windows Key + E. The Windows Key is the key with the Windows logo on it, typically located between the Ctrl and Alt keys on the left side of your keyboard. Pressing Windows Key + E simultaneously will open File Explorer within one to two seconds on most computers. This method works on Windows 10 and Windows 11, and it's one of the fastest ways to open File Explorer if your hands are already on the keyboard.

The advantage of using keyboard shortcuts is that they work regardless of what's currently displayed on your screen. If you have multiple windows open, if your screen is full of programs, or if you're working in a full-screen application, pressing Windows Key + E will still bring File Explorer to the front of your screen. This consistency makes keyboard shortcuts particularly popular among people who work intensively with files and folders throughout their day.
Another keyboard-related method involves using the Run dialog. Press Windows Key + R to open the "Run" dialog box, then type "explorer" and press Enter. This will also open File Explorer. However, this method typically takes longer than the dedicated Windows Key + E shortcut and is less commonly used for this purpose. The Run dialog method is more useful for opening specific locations or running other programs.
If you find yourself opening File Explorer frequently throughout your day, learning and using the Windows Key + E shortcut can save significant time over weeks and months. Some power users report that using keyboard shortcuts increases their productivity by 10-15% compared to constantly reaching for the mouse or trackpad. The muscle memory develops quickly—after just a few days of use, the shortcut becomes automatic.
Practical takeaway: Press Windows Key + E on your keyboard to open File Explorer instantly from anywhere on your computer. This shortcut works reliably on all modern Windows systems.
Opening File Explorer Through the Start Menu
The Start Menu is the primary hub for accessing programs and features on your Windows computer. It's typically opened by clicking the Windows logo icon in the bottom-left corner of your screen (or bottom-right on some customized setups). Once the Start Menu is open, you can search for and open File Explorer directly. In Windows 10 and Windows 11, the process is nearly identical, though the visual appearance differs slightly between versions.

To open File Explorer through the Start Menu, click the Windows logo to open the Start Menu, then type "file explorer" in the search box that appears. Within a second or two, File Explorer should appear in the search results, typically at or near the top of the list. Click on "File Explorer" from the search results, and it will open. Alternatively, you can type just "explorer" since Windows recognizes this shortened term as referring to File Explorer. This method is particularly useful for people who aren't familiar with the taskbar location or keyboard shortcuts yet.
Some users prefer browsing through the Start Menu visually rather than using the search feature. In Windows 11, File Explorer may appear in your app list if you scroll through it. In Windows 10, you can pin File Explorer to your Start Menu for even quicker access. To do this, find File Explorer using the search method described above, right-click on it, and select "Pin to Start." After pinning, a File Explorer tile will appear on your Start Menu's main screen, allowing you to open it with one click.
The Start Menu method is more time-consuming than using the taskbar or keyboard shortcuts, but it offers a straightforward, discoverable path for people learning how to access File Explorer for the first time. It's also useful if you're helping someone else use a computer and need to demonstrate where to find File Explorer. The search functionality ensures that you'll find the application even if you're not sure exactly where it's located or what it's called.
Practical takeaway: Click the Windows logo, type "file explorer," and click the result to open File Explorer through the Start Menu. You can also pin File Explorer to your Start Menu for one-click access.
Opening File Explorer by Accessing Folders Directly
Another way to open File Explorer is by interacting with files and folders that already exist on your computer. When you download a file from the internet, most web browsers give you the option to "Open folder" or "Show in folder" after the download completes. Clicking this option opens File Explorer directly to the location where the file was saved. Similarly, when you save a document using Word, Excel, Google Docs, or most other programs, the save dialog window is actually a version of File Explorer that lets you navigate to where you want to save your file.
