How to Pay Your Dominion Energy Virginia Bill

Understanding Your Dominion Energy Virginia Account

Dominion Energy Virginia provides electricity and natural gas service to millions of customers across Virginia and North Carolina. Before making a payment, it helps to understand your account structure and what information appears on your bill. Your account number is a unique identifier that Dominion Energy uses to track your service address, usage history, and payment records. This number typically appears in the upper right corner of your paper bill and consists of digits that begin with numbers specific to your service region.

Your bill contains several key sections. The bill summary shows your current charges, previous balance, and total amount due. The usage section breaks down how much electricity or natural gas you consumed during the billing period, measured in kilowatt-hours for electric service or therms for natural gas. The rate section explains the per-unit cost you pay for consumption, which may vary based on your service type and time of year. During winter months, heating costs often increase significantly, while summer cooling demands affect electricity charges.

Dominion Energy Virginia sends bills on a monthly cycle, typically on the same day each month. The due date usually falls about 20 days after the bill date. If you pay after the due date but within a grace period, you may incur a late payment fee, typically around $10 to $15 depending on your bill amount. Understanding your billing cycle helps you plan payment timing and avoid unexpected late charges. Many customers find it useful to mark their due date on a calendar or set phone reminders to ensure timely payments.

Practical takeaway: Locate your account number on a recent bill and note your billing cycle date. This information will be needed for any payment method you choose.

Online Payment Methods Through Dominion Energy's Website

The most common way Virginia customers pay their Dominion Energy bills is through the company's official website at dominionenergy.com. The website provides a secure portal where you can view your bill, check your usage, and submit payment from your computer or mobile device. To pay online, you'll need to create or log into your account using your account number and other identifying information. First-time users typically need to set up a username and password, which Dominion Energy will verify using personal details on file.

Once logged in, the "Pay My Bill" section displays your current balance and provides options for one-time payments or setting up automatic payments. For a one-time payment, you can choose your payment amount and the date you want the payment processed. Dominion Energy accepts payment via bank account debit (electronic check), which typically processes within one to two business days. There is no fee for paying directly from your checking or savings account through this method, making it a cost-effective option.

The website also accepts credit card and debit card payments, though these transactions may incur a small processing fee, typically between 2 and 3 percent of your payment amount. Before choosing this option, weigh whether the convenience justifies the additional cost. For example, if your bill is $150 and you use a credit card with a 2.5 percent fee, you would pay an extra $3.75. The payment confirmation page displays a reference number that you should save for your records.

Mobile app users can download the official Dominion Energy Virginia app from Apple App Store or Google Play. The app provides the same payment functionality as the website but may load faster on smartphones and offers push notifications when your bill is ready to view. You log in using the same credentials as the website, and the app shows your payment history and upcoming due dates at a glance.

Practical takeaway: Set up your online account at dominionenergy.com and note your username. For the lowest cost, use bank account debit rather than credit cards when paying through the website or app.

Automatic Payment Setup and Recurring Billing

Automatic payments represent a popular option for customers who prefer not to think about their monthly bill. When you set up automatic payment through Dominion Energy's website, the company withdraws your payment amount from your bank account on your due date each month. This method eliminates the risk of forgetting a payment deadline and helps you avoid late fees. Most customers choose to pay their full bill amount automatically, though some set up automatic payments for a fixed amount and pay any remaining balance manually.

To establish automatic payments, you'll need to provide your bank account information, including your routing number and account number. This information is transmitted through encrypted security channels designed to protect your financial data. Dominion Energy stores this information securely and uses it only for processing your monthly payments. You retain the right to modify or cancel automatic payments at any time through your online account or by calling customer service.

Before authorizing automatic payments, verify that your bank account has sufficient funds on your due date each month. Most people find it helpful to check their automatic payment confirmation email, which Dominion Energy typically sends within 24 hours of processing. This email confirms the amount withdrawn and the transaction date. If you notice an error or unexpected charge, you can contact Dominion Energy customer service to dispute the transaction within a specific timeframe, usually around 60 days.

Some customers worry about setting up automatic payments if their bill amount varies seasonally. Winter bills are typically highest due to heating needs, while summer bills increase due to air conditioning usage. Dominion Energy's automatic payment system withdraws only your actual bill amount each month, not a fixed payment, so your payment will naturally be higher during peak seasons and lower during mild months. This approach means your automatic payments match your actual consumption rather than charging the same amount year-round.

Practical takeaway: Automatic payments can be set up in minutes through your online account. Verify your bank account information carefully before confirming, and plan to have sufficient funds available on your due date each month.

Alternative Payment Options and Phone-Based Payments

Not all Dominion Energy customers have internet access or prefer online payment methods. Dominion Energy Virginia offers phone-based payment options for customers who wish to pay by telephone. By calling Dominion Energy's customer service number (1-866-DOMINION or 1-866-366-4646), you can speak with a representative who will assist you in submitting your payment over the phone. This service is available during business hours and certain extended hours on weekdays. When paying by phone, you'll need to provide your account number and either your bank account information or credit card number.

Phone payments typically process within one to two business days, similar to online bank account debits. You'll receive a confirmation number at the end of the call that serves as your receipt and proof of payment. Write down this confirmation number and keep it with your billing records. If you ever need to dispute the payment or verify it was processed, this reference number helps customer service locate your transaction quickly.

Mail payments remain an option for customers who prefer traditional methods. You can write a check or money order, include your account number on the payment, and mail it to the address displayed on your bill. Dominion Energy's mailing address for bill payments typically appears in the "Payment Options" section of your bill. When paying by mail, allow extra time for the check to arrive and be processed—usually 5 to 10 business days. This delay means you should mail your payment well in advance of your due date to prevent late fees. Always make checks payable to Dominion Energy or the specific subsidiary name shown on your bill.

In some areas, Dominion Energy offers payment through local utility payment centers or third-party payment processors. These locations accept cash, checks, and debit cards in exchange for processing your bill payment. A small convenience fee, typically $1 to $3, applies when using these third-party services. Contact your local Dominion Energy office or check your bill for information about payment centers near you.

Practical takeaway: Phone payments work well for customers who need assistance, while mail payments are reliable but slower. When mailing a check, send it at least 10 days before your due date to ensure timely arrival and processing.

Managing Multiple Accounts and Account-Specific Situations

Customers who own rental properties, operate businesses, or have multiple residences may manage several Dominion Energy accounts. The online account portal lets you manage multiple accounts under a single login if they're linked in the system. When you first log in, a dropdown menu or account selection screen shows all accounts associated with your username. You can switch between accounts to view different bills, usage data, and payment histories. This feature simplifies bill management when you're responsible for multiple properties.
