How to Remove Organ Donor Status From License

Understanding Organ Donor Status and Why You Might Want to Remove It

Organ donor status appears on your driver's license or state ID card as a choice you make about what happens to your organs and tissues after you die. When you register as an organ donor, you're indicating that you want to donate your organs, eyes, tissue, or bone to people who need transplants. This decision is completely voluntary, and you have the right to change your mind at any time, for any reason.

People choose to remove their organ donor status for many different reasons. Some individuals have religious or cultural beliefs that make organ donation feel wrong for them. Others may have experienced a change in their personal values or family circumstances. Some people worry about the medical care they receive if they're listed as a donor, though medical professionals say this doesn't happen. Others simply change their minds after initially saying yes. Whatever your reason, removing your donor status is a straightforward process that your state's motor vehicle department can handle.

The important thing to understand is that your organ donor decision is yours alone to make and change. No one can force you to remain a donor if you don't want to be. Your state's motor vehicle department has procedures in place specifically to help people remove their donor status, and these procedures are designed to be accessible to anyone who wants to use them.

Practical takeaway: Recognizing that organ donor status is changeable and reversible means you have control over this decision throughout your life, and you can update it whenever your circumstances or beliefs shift.

How Organ Donor Status Appears on Your License and ID

When you look at your driver's license or state ID card, you'll notice a small marking or symbol that indicates your organ donor status. Different states use different visual indicators. Some states print the words "Organ Donor" on the card. Others use a special symbol, like a red heart, a green ribbon, or a special design in a corner of the card. Some states place this information on the back of the license, while others put it on the front. If you're unsure what your state's marking looks like, you can check your state's motor vehicle department website or call their customer service line.

The organ donor marking on your license serves as a quick way for medical professionals and emergency responders to know your wishes after death. When someone dies and is being evaluated as a potential donor, emergency room staff will check the license to see if that person indicated they wanted to donate. Some states also maintain a separate registry where donor information is stored electronically, separate from the license itself.

It's worth noting that simply having a donor marking on your license doesn't automatically mean your organs will be taken. In reality, medical professionals also contact your family members to confirm your wishes and get their consent. Many states require family approval even if you're marked as a donor on your license. This is why it's important to talk with your family about your organ donation wishes, whether you want to be a donor or not.

When you remove your donor status, the marking will be removed from your physical license, and if your state has an electronic registry, your name will be removed from that as well. The next time you renew your license, the donor marking won't appear on your new card.

Practical takeaway: Understanding where and how your donor status appears on your license helps you confirm whether you currently have donor status and what changes to expect when you remove it.

• Find your local office: Visit your state's motor vehicle department website and locate the office nearest you. You can usually find office hours, address, and parking information online. Some states have multiple locations in each county, so choose the one that's most convenient.
• Gather required documents: Bring your current driver's license or state ID card, and bring at least one form of identification. Most states accept a passport, military ID, or other government-issued ID. Some states may ask for proof of residency, though this varies. Call ahead to confirm what documents your specific location needs.
• Go to the counter: When you arrive, let the staff member at the counter know that you want to remove your organ donor status. You don't need to explain why. The staff member will pull up your record and show you your current donor status.
• Sign the form: You'll be asked to sign a form indicating that you want to remove your donor status. This form becomes part of your official record. Read the form carefully to make sure you understand what you're signing.
• Pay any fee (if applicable): Some states charge a small fee to update your license or ID, while others don't charge anything to remove donor status. The fee is usually between $5 and $25 if one applies. Ask what the fee is before you proceed.
• Receive confirmation: You'll receive a receipt or confirmation document showing that your donor status has been removed. Keep this document for your records.
• Update your physical license: Depending on your state, you may receive an updated license immediately, or you may need to wait until your next renewal. Ask the staff member which applies to you.

If you prefer not to visit an office in person, many states offer other options. Some allow you to make changes by phone or mail, though these methods may take longer to process. Some states have online portals where you can manage your donor status. The availability of these options varies by state.

Practical takeaway: Planning ahead by gathering required documents and calling to confirm your state's specific requirements makes the visit to remove your donor status quick and straightforward.

Alternative Methods: Phone, Mail, and Online Options

Not everyone can visit a motor vehicle department office in person. Your state may offer other ways to remove your organ donor status, though options vary significantly depending on where you live.

Phone: Many states allow you to call the motor vehicle department to remove your donor status. When you call, you'll need to provide your driver's license number, date of birth, and other identifying information. The staff member will verify your identity and ask you to confirm that you want to remove your donor status. Some states will mail you a form to sign and return, which makes the change official. Other states may record your request and process it directly. Ask specifically what the next steps are and whether you'll receive written confirmation.

Mail: You can mail a written request to your state's motor vehicle department. Write a letter that includes your full name, date of birth, driver's license number, current address, and a clear statement that you want to remove your organ donor status from your license. Include a copy of your driver's license or other identification with your letter. Mail it to the address listed on your state's motor vehicle department website. Expect this process to take 2-4 weeks to complete. Keep a copy of everything you mail for your records.

Online registration systems: Some states maintain organ donor registries online where you can manage your status directly. If your state has this system, you may be able to log in and remove your status with just a few clicks. To find out if your state has an online registry, search "[your state name] organ donor registry" online or visit your state's motor vehicle department website. Some online systems integrate with your state's driver's license records, while others are separate registries. Either way, removing your status online typically updates your official record.

Combination approaches: Some states use a combination of methods. For example, you might remove your status online through a registry, but then need to renew your physical license at an office or through the mail to update the marking on your card.

Practical takeaway: Knowing what methods your state offers means you can choose the option that works best for your schedule and circumstances, without needing to make an office visit if other options are available.
