How to Renew Your Denver License Plate
Understanding Denver License Plate Renewal Basics
Your Denver license plate renewal is a routine process that Colorado vehicle owners must complete periodically to keep their registration current with the state. The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) oversees all vehicle registrations and plates throughout the state, including the Denver metro area. License plates typically need renewal every year or every two years, depending on the type of vehicle you own and whether you've chosen a standard or specialty plate design.

Colorado's vehicle registration system works by issuing registration certificates and license plates that display your vehicle's registration status. When your registration expires, your plates are no longer valid for road use, and operating a vehicle with expired plates can result in traffic citations and fines. The state uses a calendar-based renewal system, meaning your renewal date depends on when your vehicle was originally registered or last renewed.
The renewal process itself involves several steps: confirming your vehicle information, paying the renewal fee, and receiving new plates or a registration renewal sticker (depending on your situation). Most vehicle owners in Denver find that understanding these basic components makes the process straightforward. You have multiple methods to renew—through mail, online, at a DMV office, or through certain third-party locations like some auto parts stores or county clerk offices.
One important distinction to understand is that license plate renewal is not the same as vehicle registration renewal, though they often happen together. Your registration is the official record that your vehicle meets state requirements and that you own or have legal right to operate it. Your license plate is the physical display of that registration. Sometimes you'll receive new plates with your renewal, and sometimes you'll only receive a sticker to place on your existing plates.
Practical Takeaway: Check your current registration certificate or license plate to find your renewal month and year. This information appears on your registration paperwork and helps you plan when to complete your renewal.
How to Check Your Renewal Status and Timeline
Before starting your renewal process, you should verify your current registration status and renewal date. Colorado allows vehicle owners to check this information through the state DMV website at dmv.colorado.gov. The online system lets you enter your vehicle identification number (VIN) and other vehicle details to see your registration expiration date. This step prevents unnecessary confusion about when you actually need to renew.

Your renewal notice typically arrives in the mail 30 to 60 days before your registration expires. This official document from the Colorado DMV includes your renewal date, current vehicle information, the renewal fee amount, and instructions for completing your renewal. The notice will specify what type of renewal is required—whether you need new plates or just a renewal sticker. Keep this notice handy, as it contains details you'll need for online or mail renewals.
Colorado operates on a rolling renewal system, which means different vehicle owners have different renewal dates based on when they originally registered their vehicles. Unlike some states that renew all registrations on the same date, Colorado spreads renewals throughout the year. This system reduces long lines at DMV offices and helps distribute the workload. Your specific renewal month depends on your vehicle's registration history.
If you haven't received a renewal notice and your registration is approaching expiration, you can contact the Colorado DMV directly. The agency has phone lines for registration questions and can provide information about your specific vehicle's renewal date. You can also visit a local DMV office in the Denver area with your current registration paperwork. The DMV maintains multiple locations throughout Denver and surrounding counties to serve residents.
Practical Takeaway: Mark your renewal expiration date on a calendar as soon as you locate it. This gives you a clear timeline and prevents accidental driving with expired registration, which carries penalties in Colorado.
Renewing Your License Plate Online or by Mail
Colorado offers online renewal through the state DMV website, which is one of the most convenient methods for many Denver vehicle owners. To renew online, you'll need your current registration number, vehicle identification number (VIN), and a valid payment method. The website walks you through entering your vehicle information and selecting whether you want new plates or just a registration renewal. Online renewal typically costs the same as in-person renewal—you're simply choosing a different method. As of 2024, standard passenger vehicle registration fees in Colorado range from approximately $96 to $270 annually, depending on your vehicle's weight and other factors.

The online process usually takes 10-15 minutes to complete. You'll answer questions about your vehicle, confirm your address and contact information, and then pay the renewal fee using a credit card or debit card. Once your payment processes successfully, the state issues your registration confirmation digitally. You'll receive an email confirmation of your renewal. If you've paid for new plates, they'll be mailed to your address within 7-10 business days. If your renewal only requires a sticker, that sticker arrives by mail and you attach it to your existing plate.
Mail renewal follows a similar process but requires you to complete it using the paper renewal notice the state sends you. You'll fill out the form, include your payment, and mail the materials back to the address indicated on your notice. The state recommends mailing renewal materials at least two weeks before your expiration date to ensure processing. Mail processing typically takes 2-3 weeks, so timing matters if your renewal date is approaching. Include a check or money order with your mailed renewal—the DMV does not accept credit card payments through mail.
Both online and mail renewal maintain your current license plate number if you're doing a standard renewal. You only receive new plates if specifically requested or if the state determines your current plates are damaged or unreadable. Many Denver residents prefer online renewal because it's faster and provides immediate confirmation, while others use mail renewal if they have limited internet access or prefer paper documentation.
Practical Takeaway: If your renewal date is more than two weeks away, mail renewal is a reasonable option. If it's within two weeks, online renewal is safer to ensure processing before your registration expires.
Renewing Your License Plate In-Person at DMV Offices
For Denver residents who prefer to renew in person, multiple Colorado DMV offices operate throughout the metro area. The main Denver DMV office is located at 2405 South Poinciana Boulevard, with additional offices in surrounding areas including Lakewood, Aurora, and Adams County. In-person renewal allows you to complete the entire process on the same day and typically takes 15-30 minutes depending on office traffic. You can bring your current registration paperwork and payment directly to any full-service DMV office.

When visiting a DMV office for renewal, bring your current registration certificate, proof of identification (such as your driver's license), and payment for the renewal fee. The DMV accepts cash, check, debit cards, and credit cards at physical locations. If you're renewing plates for a vehicle registered to a business or if there have been ownership changes, bring additional documentation such as bill of sale papers or business registration information. A DMV employee will verify your vehicle information, process your payment, and issue your registration on the spot.
Colorado DMV offices maintain specific hours of operation, typically Monday through Friday with limited Saturday hours at some locations. Visit dmv.colorado.gov to find current hours and locations near you. The Denver area generally has good office availability, but waits can increase during certain times of the month. Many people report that visiting early in the morning (when offices first open) or on weekday afternoons results in shorter waits. Some DMV offices offer online appointment scheduling, which you can check on the state website.
If you need new plates issued, the in-person process provides them immediately at most locations, though some circumstances may require plates to be mailed. You'll drive away with your new plates the same day in most cases. This makes in-person renewal beneficial if you want your new plates right away. However, if you're only renewing your registration (not getting new plates), you'll receive a sticker by mail to place on your existing plate even with in-person renewal.
Practical Takeaway: Call ahead or check the DMV website for current wait times before visiting an office in person. This helps you plan your visit for a time when the office is less busy.
Third-Party Renewal Options and County Services
Beyond the state DMV, Colorado allows vehicle owners to renew registration at certain third-party locations, which many Denver residents find convenient. Several auto parts retailers, including some locations of national chains, offer DMV services and can process license plate renewals. Additionally, Denver County Clerk's office and other county clerk offices throughout the metro area process vehicle registrations. These alternatives operate
