How to Turn Off Amber Alerts on Android

What Are Amber Alerts and Why They Send to Your Phone

Amber Alerts are emergency messages sent to mobile devices when a child has been abducted and law enforcement believes the child is in serious danger. The system gets its name from Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old girl abducted and killed in Arlington, Texas in 1996. Her parents' efforts to create a warning system led to the development of the Amber Alert Program, which officially launched in 1997.

When police believe a child abduction meets specific criteria, they contact local broadcast stations and wireless carriers. The wireless carriers then send alert messages to all compatible phones in the geographic area where authorities think the child might be. According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, Amber Alerts help locate missing children through community awareness. Since the program started, more than 1,100 children have been recovered with help from Amber Alerts.

Your Android phone receives these alerts through the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) system, which also sends alerts about severe weather, imminent threats to public safety, and presidential emergencies. Unlike text messages or notifications, Amber Alerts bypass normal notification channels and use a special alert system built into your phone's firmware. This means they appear even if your phone is on silent or if you've blocked notifications from other sources.

Amber Alerts sound distinctive and attention-grabbing by design. The alert produces a loud tone, vibration pattern, and on-screen message with details about the missing child, suspected abductor, and potentially the vehicle involved. The goal is to reach as many people as possible to increase the chances of locating the child before harm occurs.

Practical takeaway: Understanding that Amber Alerts serve a critical public safety function helps you decide whether disabling them suits your needs. If you choose to keep them enabled, you're potentially contributing to the recovery of an abducted child in your area.

How to Access Android's Emergency Alerts Settings

To disable Amber Alerts on Android, you need to find the Emergency Alerts settings, which are typically located within your phone's main Settings application. The exact path varies slightly depending on your Android version and phone manufacturer, but the general process remains consistent across most devices. This guide covers the most common methods used by Android phones running versions 6.0 and newer.

Start by opening your phone's Settings app—this is usually represented by a gear icon on your home screen or in your app drawer. Once in Settings, look for options labeled "Apps," "Apps and Notifications," "Notifications," or "Advanced." Some Samsung devices categorize this under "Emergency Alerts" directly. Other manufacturers like Google Pixel, OnePlus, and Motorola typically place emergency alert settings in the Notifications section.

If you're having difficulty locating the settings, you can also access emergency alerts through your phone's built-in SMS or messaging application. Some Android phones allow you to manage alert preferences by opening the default Messages app and looking for a menu option related to emergency alerts or cell broadcasts. Alternatively, you can access emergency alert settings through your carrier's mobile network settings, though this method is less common on standard Android phones.

Different manufacturers implement slightly different naming conventions. Google Pixel phones refer to these as "Emergency Alerts" settings. Samsung Galaxy devices may label them as "Emergency Alerts" or place them under "Advanced Features." If you cannot find these settings using the standard paths, you can search within Settings by typing keywords like "emergency," "alert," or "amber" into your phone's Settings search bar if your device supports this feature.

Practical takeaway: Take time to explore your specific phone's Settings structure before making changes. Knowing how to navigate to emergency alert settings allows you to modify them whenever you choose, not just when Amber Alerts occur.

Turning Off Amber Alerts on Major Android Devices

Google Pixel phones running Android 11 or newer provide the most straightforward method for disabling Amber Alerts. Open Settings, navigate to "Notifications," then select "Emergency Alerts." You'll see checkboxes for different alert types: Extreme Threats, Severe Threats, Other Threats, and Public Safety Messages. Amber Alerts fall under the "Other Threats" category. Simply uncheck the box next to "Amber Alerts" or "Other Threats" depending on your exact Android version. The change takes effect immediately, and your phone will no longer receive alerts about missing children in your area.

Samsung Galaxy devices follow a similar process but use different menu labels. Go to Settings, then navigate to "Apps" or "Applications." Select "Messages" (Samsung's default SMS app). Tap the three-dot menu icon and choose "Settings," then look for "Emergency Alerts" or "Cell Broadcast." From there, you can uncheck "Amber Alerts" to disable them. Some older Samsung models might require you to go to Settings > "Advanced Features" > "Emergency Alerts" instead.

OnePlus phones typically store these settings under Settings > "Apps and Permissions" > "Permissions" > "Receive Emergency Alerts." You can toggle off Amber Alerts from this menu. Motorola devices usually place emergency alert controls in Settings > "Apps & Notifications" > "Notifications" > "Advanced" > "Emergency Alerts."

HTC phones and other Android manufacturers generally follow one of these patterns. If your device manufacturer isn't listed here, navigate to Settings and use the search function to look for terms like "emergency," "alert," "WEA," or "cell broadcast." Most Android devices made in the past five years support some form of emergency alert disabling.

Practical takeaway: Write down or take a screenshot of the exact path to emergency alert settings on your specific device model. This saves time if you want to re-enable alerts later or if someone else needs to adjust these settings on your phone.

Understanding Your Options for Alert Preferences

Rather than disabling all emergency alerts, you may want to customize which types of alerts you receive. Most Android devices offer granular control over different alert categories, allowing you to keep weather warnings and severe threat notifications while disabling Amber Alerts specifically. This balanced approach lets you stay informed about genuine dangers while reducing interruptions from amber alerts that may not be relevant to your location or circumstances.

The Wireless Emergency Alerts system typically divides alerts into four main categories: Extreme Threats (such as imminent threats to life and safety), Severe Threats (including severe weather and public safety threats), Other Threats (primarily Amber Alerts and child abduction notices), and Public Safety Messages (informational messages from authorities). Your Android device's emergency alert settings usually provide checkboxes for each category, letting you choose independently which ones you want to receive.

Some users prefer to keep Extreme and Severe Threat alerts but disable Amber Alerts because they find the Amber Alert frequency disruptive, especially if they live in areas with frequent alerts. Others disable all emergency alerts because they prefer to receive information through traditional news sources. A third group keeps all alerts enabled because they value the potential to help locate missing children, despite occasional interruptions.

Your decision should reflect your personal preferences and circumstances. If you have young children or work in child-related fields, you might want to keep Amber Alerts enabled. If you live near a state border and frequently receive alerts for abductions in nearby states that are unlikely to affect you, you might disable them. Some people disable alerts during specific times, such as work hours, and re-enable them in the evening.

Practical takeaway: Review all available alert categories in your emergency alert settings rather than making an all-or-nothing decision. You can often achieve the notification experience you want through selective customization rather than complete disabling.

What Happens After You Disable Amber Alerts

Once you've disabled Amber Alerts on your Android phone, you will no longer receive notifications about missing children in your geographic area. This change affects only your individual device—disabling alerts on your phone does not impact alerts sent to other people's phones. The wireless carriers and law enforcement agencies will continue sending alerts to all other compatible phones in your area; yours simply won't receive them.

The actual process of disabling alerts happens through your phone's firmware, which communicates with your wireless carrier's network. When emergency alert settings are disabled, your phone essentially tells the carrier not to deliver those specific alert categories to your device. This is different from blocking notifications from an app, as emergency alerts operate at a deeper system level. Because of this, you cannot accidentally re-enable Amber Alerts through app settings or by installing updates, though updates to
