How To Turn Off Read Receipts in WhatsApp
Understanding Read Receipts in WhatsApp
Read receipts are a feature in WhatsApp that shows when someone has read your message. When you send a message to another person, you may see small checkmarks appear next to your message. A single gray checkmark means the message was sent to WhatsApp's servers. Two gray checkmarks mean the message was delivered to the recipient's phone. Two blue checkmarks mean the recipient has opened and read your message. This feature works on both individual chats and group conversations, though group read receipts function slightly differently since multiple people may read the same message at different times.

WhatsApp introduced read receipts as a standard feature to give users information about their messages. The feature is turned on by default when you first install WhatsApp. This means that unless you change the settings, other people can see when you read their messages, and you can see when they read yours. Understanding how read receipts work is the first step toward controlling your privacy and managing your communication preferences on the platform.
The blue checkmarks that indicate a message has been read can sometimes create social pressure or expectations around responding quickly. Some people feel uncomfortable knowing that others can see they've read a message but haven't replied yet. Others prefer not to share this information as part of their communication style. WhatsApp recognized this concern and built the option to turn off read receipts into the app's settings menu.
It's worth noting that read receipts are different from "last seen" status, which shows when you were last active on WhatsApp. You can turn these off separately if you wish. Read receipts specifically relate to whether people can see that you've opened and read individual messages. Both features exist to provide transparency in conversations, but WhatsApp gives you control over whether you want to use them.
Practical takeaway: Read receipts show others when you've read their messages through blue checkmarks. This feature is on by default, but WhatsApp allows you to disable it through the settings. Understanding this feature helps you make informed decisions about your privacy preferences.
Steps to Turn Off Read Receipts on iPhone
If you use WhatsApp on an iPhone, turning off read receipts takes just a few taps in the settings menu. Start by opening the WhatsApp application on your iPhone. Look at the bottom of your screen, where you'll see several tabs including Chats, Status, Calls, and Settings. Tap on the Settings tab, which is typically the rightmost option at the bottom of the screen and looks like a gear icon.

Once you're in the Settings menu, look for an option labeled "Account" or "Privacy". Tap on this option to access your account and privacy preferences. In the Account section, you should see several privacy-related options. Look specifically for "Read Receipts" or "Privacy" settings. When you find the read receipts option, you'll see a toggle switch next to it that is currently turned on (indicated by a blue switch or similar visual marker).
Tap the toggle switch next to "Read Receipts" to turn it off. The switch should change color or appearance to show that it's now disabled. Some versions of WhatsApp may show this setting under "Privacy" instead of having a separate "Read Receipts" section. If you can't find it in Account settings, go back and check the Privacy section within Settings. Once you've turned off read receipts, the change takes effect immediately.
After you turn off read receipts, you will no longer see blue checkmarks when other people read your messages. Equally important, other people will not see blue checkmarks when you read their messages. However, they will still be able to see the two gray checkmarks indicating that messages were delivered to your phone, and they may still be able to see your "last seen" status depending on your other privacy settings.
Practical takeaway: On iPhone, open WhatsApp Settings, go to Account or Privacy, find Read Receipts, and toggle it off. The change takes effect immediately, and you'll no longer share or see read information for messages.
Steps to Turn Off Read Receipts on Android
Android users can turn off read receipts through a similar process, though the exact menu structure may vary slightly depending on their version of WhatsApp and Android phone. Begin by opening WhatsApp on your Android device. At the top of the screen, you should see three vertical dots or lines, often called the menu button or options button. Tap this button to open the menu.

From the dropdown menu that appears, look for an option labeled "Settings" or sometimes just a gear icon. Tap on Settings to enter the preferences area. This will take you to the main settings menu for WhatsApp. From here, look for "Account" or "Privacy" options. Different versions of WhatsApp may organize these settings differently, so you may need to explore slightly, but these options are typically near the top of the settings list.
Once you're in the Account or Privacy section, scroll through the available options until you find "Read Receipts" or a similar label. When you locate this setting, you'll see it has a toggle switch or checkbox next to it that's currently enabled. Android typically shows enabled settings with a blue toggle or checkmark. Tap on the toggle switch or checkbox to disable read receipts. The setting should immediately show that it's now turned off.
Android users may occasionally see the read receipts setting located under different menu names depending on which version of WhatsApp they have installed. If you're having difficulty finding it in Account settings, check under Notifications or Privacy settings as well. Some older versions of WhatsApp may organize privacy settings slightly differently. Once you've found and disabled read receipts, other users won't see blue checkmarks when you read their messages, and you won't see them when others read yours.
Practical takeaway: On Android, tap the menu button, go to Settings, then Account or Privacy, find Read Receipts, and toggle it off. The setting takes effect immediately across all your chats.
What Changes When You Turn Off Read Receipts
When you disable read receipts in WhatsApp, several specific things change about how message status appears in your conversations. The most noticeable change is that the blue checkmarks will disappear from your sent messages. When someone reads a message you send, you will no longer see the two blue checkmarks that previously indicated they had opened and read your message. Instead, messages will show only the two gray checkmarks, indicating they were delivered, and will remain at that status indefinitely.

For incoming messages, the behavior also changes. When you read messages from other people, they will no longer see the blue checkmarks on their messages to you. If someone sends you a message and you read it, they'll only see the gray delivery checkmarks, not the blue read checkmarks. This applies to all your conversations, whether they're individual chats with single people or group conversations with multiple participants. The setting applies universally across WhatsApp.
One important detail to understand: turning off read receipts is a one-way change in terms of what you share. When you turn off read receipts, other people cannot see when you've read their messages. However, this doesn't mean you're hiding your activity completely. People can still see your "last seen" status if that setting is enabled, which shows approximately when you were last active on WhatsApp. These are separate settings, so turning off read receipts doesn't automatically hide your last seen time.
In group chats, turning off read receipts prevents others from seeing that you personally have read group messages. Group conversations may still show checkmarks for the group as a whole, indicating when all members have read a message, but your individual status won't be displayed. This can be particularly useful in group settings where you want to read messages without creating expectations that you'll respond immediately.
Practical takeaway: After turning off read receipts, blue checkmarks disappear from messages you send and receive. Others can't see when you read messages, though they may still see your last seen status if it's enabled.
Managing Other Related Privacy Settings
While read receipts show when you've read a message, WhatsApp has several other privacy settings that work together to control what information you share. One related setting is "Last Seen", which shows other people approximately when you were last active on WhatsApp. You can turn this off separately from read receipts. To manage your last seen status, go to Settings, then Account or Privacy, and look for "Last Seen". You can typically choose to hide it from everyone, show it to contacts only, or show it to everyone. Turning off your last seen status means people won't know when you were
