Understanding California State Disability Insurance (SDI)
California State Disability Insurance is a program run by the state that provides partial income replacement to workers who cannot work because of a non-work-related illness, injury, or pregnancy. The program is part of California's social insurance system and has been operating since 1946. SDI differs from workers' compensation, which covers work-related injuries, and unemployment insurance, which helps people between jobs.

The program operates through payroll deductions. California employers and employees contribute to a fund managed by the state's Employment Development Department (EDD). Workers who meet certain requirements can receive weekly payments while they recover and cannot work. The benefit amount is based on a formula tied to the worker's earnings history during a specific period before the claim is filed.
SDI covers several situations: temporary disabilities lasting more than seven days, pregnancy and childbirth, recovery after childbirth, and bonding time after the birth or adoption of a child. The program does not cover strikes, job loss, or self-employment income unless the person paid into the system as an employee. As of 2024, California's SDI program pays out benefits to hundreds of thousands of workers each year, with average weekly benefit amounts ranging from around $50 to $1,300 depending on earnings history.
Understanding how SDI works is the first step toward learning whether the program might apply to your situation. The program has specific rules about who contributed enough to the fund, how long benefits last, and what constitutes a qualifying condition. This guide provides information about the online filing process so you can understand what to expect when you file through the state's online system.
Practical takeaway: SDI is a state insurance program funded through payroll contributions that provides partial wage replacement for qualifying disabilities. Knowing this distinction helps you understand whether SDI or another program might be relevant to your circumstances.
What You Need to Prepare Before Filing Online
Before starting an online SDI claim through the California EDD website, you should gather several pieces of information. Having these documents and details ready makes the filing process move more smoothly and reduces errors that could delay your claim. The state's online system requires specific information that directly relates to your identity, work history, and the condition preventing you from working.

First, collect recent pay stubs from your job. The EDD uses your earnings to calculate the weekly benefit amount you may receive. Ideally, gather the last few months of pay stubs before the date you stopped working or became unable to work. If you no longer have paper stubs, many employers provide online access to pay history through employee portals. Pay stubs should show your gross earnings, deductions, and employer information.
You will also need your Social Security number and identification documents. A valid driver's license, state ID, or passport works for this purpose. The online system verifies your identity to prevent fraud and ensure payments go to the correct person. Have this information accessible before starting your claim.
Medical documentation strengthens your claim. While the EDD may request medical records after you file, having doctor's notes, treatment records, or correspondence about your condition helps the state understand your disability. You do not need to submit these documents initially, but knowing where they are located helps if you are asked for them later.
Additionally, collect information about your employer: the company name, address, phone number, and the dates you worked there. If you worked for multiple employers during the relevant earnings period, gather information for each. The online form asks for this employment history so the state can verify your contributions to the SDI fund.
Practical takeaway: Gathering your Social Security number, identification, recent pay stubs, employer information, and medical records before filing reduces delays and ensures accuracy. Organized preparation helps the process move forward without unnecessary back-and-forth with the state.
How to Access the California EDD Online Filing System
The California Employment Development Department provides an online portal where workers can file SDI claims directly. The system is called the EDD website, and you can reach it through a standard web browser on a computer, tablet, or smartphone. The online filing option is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which means you can file at a time that works for your schedule.

To access the online system, navigate to the official California EDD website. From the homepage, look for the section related to State Disability Insurance or filing a claim. The EDD website clearly labels the different claim types and provides links to file online. You can also search for "California EDD file SDI claim online" in a search engine to locate the correct portal.
When you arrive at the filing section, the system typically begins with an overview of what SDI is and whether you might be covered. This introductory section provides general information about the program, what it covers, and what you will need to proceed. Read through this section carefully, as it explains the program's basic structure and requirements.
The online system requires you to create an account or log in if you already have one. You will need to provide an email address and create a password. The state recommends using a strong password that includes letters, numbers, and symbols. This account allows you to track your claim status, upload documents, and receive updates from the EDD about your filing.
The filing process occurs in sections or steps. The online form is typically broken into manageable pages that guide you through providing information about yourself, your employment, and your disability. You do not need to complete everything in one sitting. Most online systems allow you to save your progress and return later to finish the claim. This flexibility reduces the stress of completing a long form all at once.
Practical takeaway: The California EDD online portal is open 24/7 and guides you through filing step-by-step. Creating an account and taking your time to complete each section carefully helps ensure accurate information is submitted.
Completing the Online SDI Claim Form Step-by-Step
The online SDI claim form collects information in several main categories. Understanding what each section asks helps you provide accurate responses and understand why the state needs this information. The form starts with personal information and progresses through employment history, earnings, and details about your disability.

The first section asks for your name, date of birth, Social Security number, and contact information. Provide your legal name as it appears on your identification and Social Security card. Include a current phone number and email address where the EDD can reach you. The state uses this contact information to communicate about your claim, request additional information, or notify you of decisions regarding your case.
The employment history section asks where you worked and when. The form typically requests information about your current or most recent employer, including the company name, address, phone number, and the dates you worked there. If you worked for multiple employers in the past year or so, you may need to list them as well. The EDD uses this information to verify that you contributed to the SDI fund through payroll deductions.
When the form asks about your disability or condition, provide a clear, straightforward description. Explain what is preventing you from working: a back injury, pregnancy, surgery recovery, illness, or other medical reason. You do not need to provide extensive medical jargon. Simple language about your condition and how it affects your ability to work is sufficient at this stage. The EDD may request medical records later if they need more detail.
The form also asks when your disability began and when you stopped working or reduced your work hours. Be as specific as possible with dates. Some people become unable to work on a particular day due to an injury or acute illness. Others experience a gradual inability to work due to a developing condition. Describe your situation accurately.
You will also provide information about your earnings. The online system may ask you to enter your monthly income or provide details from your pay stubs. Some online systems calculate this for you based on information you provide, while others ask you to report it directly. Accuracy matters here, as the benefit amount is based on these earnings.
Practical takeaway: Complete each form section carefully with accurate personal, employment, and earnings information. Clear descriptions of your condition help the state understand your situation without requiring immediate follow-up requests for clarification.
What Happens After You Submit Your Claim Online
Once you submit your online SDI claim, the state begins processing your filing. The EDD typically sends a confirmation email or provides a reference number confirming that your claim was received. Write down or save this reference number, as you will use it to check your claim status. The confirmation does not mean you have been approved for benefits; it simply
