Learn About Hertz Toll Charges and How They Work

Understanding Hertz Toll Charges and Technology

Hertz, one of the largest car rental companies in the United States, operates in all 50 states and many countries worldwide. When you rent a vehicle from Hertz, you may encounter toll charges during your rental period. A toll is a fee that drivers must pay to use certain roads, highways, or bridges. Understanding how Hertz handles these charges is important for anyone renting a vehicle from the company.

Hertz offers multiple ways to handle tolls during a rental. The company partners with toll management systems to track toll usage and bill customers accordingly. Depending on which state or region you're renting in, different toll collection methods may be used. Some areas use electronic toll collection systems like E-ZPass in the Northeast, SunPass in Florida, or FasTrak in California. Other regions still use traditional toll booths where drivers pay cash or use a card.

When you rent a Hertz vehicle, the rental agreement will outline how tolls will be handled. Most rental agreements include a clause about toll responsibility. Hertz typically allows customers to choose how they want to manage tolls. You can either use your own toll payment account if you have one registered in that state, or you can have tolls charged directly to your rental agreement through Hertz's toll management service.

The technology behind toll tracking has become increasingly automated. Electronic toll collection systems use radio frequency identification (RFID) tags mounted on vehicles. These tags communicate with sensors at toll collection points, recording each passage. License plate readers also photograph vehicles passing through tolls, creating a backup system for tracking. This technology means that tolls are recorded automatically without drivers needing to stop at toll booths.

Practical takeaway: Before renting a Hertz vehicle, review the rental agreement section about tolls. Understanding your options for toll payment methods will help you avoid unexpected charges and choose the payment method that works best for your travel plans.

How Hertz Toll Options Work

Hertz provides customers with several options for managing tolls during a rental period. The primary options include using Hertz's toll service, using your own existing toll account, or paying tolls directly as you encounter them. Each option has different costs and procedures, so understanding the details helps you make an informed choice.

Hertz's proprietary toll service is called different names in different regions. When you choose this option, Hertz provides a device or account that covers toll charges during your rental. The company will bill these charges to your credit card on file after your rental ends. With this service, you typically won't need to stop at toll booths or have your own toll account set up in advance. This convenience option makes travel easier, especially if you're renting a vehicle in an unfamiliar region.

The second option involves using your own existing toll account. If you already have an account with a toll management system in your state—such as E-ZPass, FasTrak, or another regional system—you may be able to use that account with the rental vehicle. To do this, you would typically need to bring your own toll tag or transponder with you. Some Hertz locations can transfer your tag to the rental vehicle temporarily. This option may offer lower per-toll rates since you're using your established account rather than Hertz's service.

The third option is to pay tolls directly at toll plazas as you encounter them. This involves stopping at toll booths and paying with cash or a credit card. This option works if you're only using a few tolls, or if you prefer not to authorize a toll service during your rental. However, this method requires you to have cash or a card available when you reach toll booths, and it can be time-consuming if you use many tolls during your rental period.

Practical takeaway: Review your toll options before picking up your rental vehicle. If you have an existing toll account in your destination state, using that account may save you money. If not, Hertz's toll service offers convenience, though it may cost more per toll than an established account would.

Toll Charges and Associated Fees

When using Hertz's toll service, the company charges customers for both the actual toll amount and an additional service fee. This service fee is what makes Hertz's toll option more expensive than paying tolls directly or using an existing personal toll account. Understanding the fee structure helps you calculate the true cost of your rental.

The actual toll amount varies significantly depending on your location and which roads you use. For example, on the New Jersey Turnpike, tolls for a standard passenger vehicle range from $2 to $16 depending on the distance traveled. On the Golden Gate Bridge in California, tolls are $6.35 for a standard vehicle. The Pennsylvania Turnpike charges between $3.50 and $43 depending on entry and exit points. These are actual toll costs that you must pay regardless of your payment method.

Beyond the base toll amount, Hertz charges a service fee for administering the toll collection. This fee typically ranges from $3.95 to $5.95 per toll transaction, depending on the specific Hertz location and toll authority involved. Some locations charge a flat daily fee instead of per-toll fees. For example, Hertz may charge $15 to $20 per day if you use their toll service, which covers unlimited tolls during that day. Other locations use a per-toll fee model where each toll passage incurs the base toll plus the service charge.

Some states have different pricing for different vehicle sizes. Larger rental vehicles like SUVs or trucks may be charged a higher rate category at toll plazas. Hertz will charge these higher tolls to the customer along with the applicable service fee. Additionally, some toll authorities charge higher rates during peak traffic times, and these increased amounts are passed through to the customer.

Hertz also charges a potential administrative fee if tolls remain unpaid at the end of your rental period and the company must pursue collection. This fee can range from $10 to $30 per incident. Some locations charge a late payment fee if the toll charge isn't processed through the rental agreement credit card correctly.

Practical takeaway: Calculate the potential toll expenses for your trip before choosing your toll payment method. Add the service fees to the base toll costs. Compare the total to what you would pay using cash at toll booths or your existing toll account to determine which option is most cost-effective for your specific route.

Regional Differences in Toll Systems

The United States does not have a unified toll collection system. Instead, each state and sometimes each region within a state operates its own toll authority with different technology, pricing, and procedures. This means Hertz's toll process varies depending on where you rent and drive. Learning about regional differences helps you understand what to expect in your specific location.

The Northeast operates several major toll systems including E-ZPass, which covers New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. E-ZPass uses electronic toll collection with transponders. Most toll plazas in this region are now cashless, meaning you cannot pay with cash. If you're renting a Hertz vehicle in this region and don't have your own E-ZPass, you must use Hertz's toll service or potentially face penalties for toll violations.

The Southeast primarily uses different systems. Florida operates SunPass, Georgia uses Peach Pass, and North Carolina uses NC Quick Pass. These systems are not interconnected, so a tag from one state won't work in another. Hertz rental locations in these states coordinate with the relevant toll authorities to provide toll services to customers.

The West Coast uses FasTrak in California, Good to Go in Washington, and various systems in other states. California has some of the highest toll rates in the nation, with certain Bay Area bridges charging $6 to $7 per crossing. FasTrak discounts tolls for account holders, so using your own FasTrak account while renting can provide savings.

Some states have very limited toll infrastructure. Texas, for example, has several toll roads and toll bridges, but drivers can also avoid them by using free alternative routes. New England states like Massachusetts use the Fast Lane toll system. The Midwest has various turnpikes with toll collection, but many interstate highways are free.

International considerations also matter. If you're renting a Hertz vehicle in Canada or Mexico, different toll systems apply. Some countries use highway tolls extensively while others don't. Hertz locations in different countries have different toll policies and procedures.
