Learn About Making Your Exeter Finance Payment

Understanding Exeter Finance and How Auto Loans Work

Exeter Finance is a financial services company that buys and services auto loans. The company purchases vehicle loans from dealerships and other lenders, then manages the billing and payment process for borrowers. Understanding how this company fits into your auto loan structure is important for managing your monthly payments effectively.

When you finance a vehicle through a dealership, your loan may be sold to various financial institutions that specialize in loan servicing. Exeter Finance is one such company. If your loan is serviced by Exeter Finance, the dealership where you purchased your vehicle is no longer your direct contact for payments—Exeter Finance becomes your loan servicer. This means Exeter Finance handles sending you billing statements, processing your payments, answering questions about your loan terms, and managing your account overall.

The auto loan process typically works this way: a borrower finances a vehicle purchase, the original lender (often a dealership's finance department) sells the loan to a servicing company like Exeter Finance within days or weeks, and the borrower then makes payments to the servicing company for the life of the loan. This practice is standard across the auto lending industry. According to industry data, the vast majority of auto loans are serviced by companies other than the original lender.

Your loan terms—including interest rate, loan length, and monthly payment amount—remain the same regardless of who services the loan. Exeter Finance does not change the terms you agreed to at the dealership. What changes is simply the company you send your payment to and the company that handles your account questions and requests.

Practical Takeaway: If you recently purchased a vehicle and received communication from Exeter Finance, this is normal. The company now services your loan, but your original loan terms and monthly payment amount have not changed. Keep documentation from your dealership showing your loan terms for your records.

Finding Your Account Information and Payment Details

Locating your account information with Exeter Finance is the first step toward managing your payment. When you begin having your loan serviced by Exeter Finance, you should receive an initial letter with important account details. This letter typically includes your account number, loan amount, interest rate, loan term length, and the date your first payment is due.

Your account number is a unique identifier for your loan. You will need this number when making payments, contacting customer service, or accessing your account online. The letter from Exeter Finance should clearly display this number. If you have misplaced this letter, you can locate your account number by logging into an online account portal, calling customer service, or checking any payment statements you may have received.

Payment statements from Exeter Finance contain several key pieces of information. The statement shows your current monthly payment amount, the due date, how much of your previous payment went toward principal (the original loan amount) versus interest, your current loan balance, and the number of payments remaining. Reading these details helps you understand how your loan is being paid down over time.

Your monthly payment amount is set based on your original loan agreement. For a typical auto loan, the amount you owe each month stays the same throughout the loan term. However, the breakdown of what portion goes to principal versus interest changes each month. Early in the loan, more of your payment covers interest. As you progress, more covers the principal balance.

Finding payment information online has become standard. Exeter Finance offers online account access where borrowers can view statements, see payment history, and review loan details. To set up online access, you typically need your account number and some identifying information from your original loan documents. Many borrowers find the online portal helpful for tracking their loan progress between statements.

Practical Takeaway: Locate and save your account number in a safe place. Write it down or store it electronically where you can find it quickly. Review your first payment statement carefully to understand your monthly payment amount and due date.

Payment Methods and How to Submit Your Payment

Exeter Finance offers several methods for borrowers to submit their monthly auto loan payments. Understanding the available options helps you choose the method that works best with your financial routine.

Online payment through the borrower portal is one of the most popular methods. Once you have created an online account with Exeter Finance, you can log in and make a payment directly. The online system typically allows you to pay immediately or schedule a payment for a future date. This method is available 24/7, giving you flexibility to pay at any time that suits your schedule. When you pay online, you receive immediate confirmation of your transaction.

Automatic bank drafts, also called automatic payments or auto-pay, allow you to authorize Exeter Finance to withdraw your monthly payment directly from your bank account on a set date each month. To arrange automatic payments, you will need to provide your bank account number and routing number. Once set up, the payment happens automatically, reducing the chance that you forget a payment. Many borrowers appreciate this method because it requires no action once the arrangement is in place. Some lenders offer a small interest rate reduction as an incentive for setting up automatic payments.

Phone payments are available by calling Exeter Finance's customer service line. A representative can process your payment over the phone using a debit card, credit card, or bank account information. The phone number for making payments should appear on your billing statement. When paying by phone, have your account number ready and expect to provide the payment amount and payment method details.

Mail payments are still accepted by Exeter Finance. Your billing statement will include the mailing address where you should send your payment. When paying by mail, allow extra time for the payment to arrive and be processed—typically seven to ten business days. Write your account number on the check or money order to ensure it is credited to the correct account. Paying by mail is slower than other methods, so plan ahead to ensure your payment arrives by the due date.

In-person payments at Exeter Finance office locations may be available in some areas. Contact the company directly to find out if there is a location near you that accepts walk-in payments. Payment through a third-party service, such as a check-cashing service or bill-pay service, may be possible, though Exeter Finance recommends using their official payment channels to ensure proper credit to your account.

Practical Takeaway: Choose the payment method that fits your schedule and habits. If you struggle to remember due dates, automatic payments remove this burden. If you prefer to maintain control of each payment, online or mail payments allow you to stay involved in the process.

Understanding Payment Due Dates and Late Payment Consequences

Your payment due date is specified in your loan agreement and appears on every billing statement. This is the date by which your payment must be received by Exeter Finance. Understanding what "received by" means is important. For online and phone payments, funds are typically considered received on the day you submit them. For mailed checks, the payment is considered received when it arrives at Exeter Finance's processing center, not when you send it. This distinction matters because payments that arrive after the due date may be considered late.

Most lenders provide a grace period, typically around 10-15 days after the due date. During this grace period, you can pay without penalty as long as you pay before the grace period ends. However, this does not mean the due date doesn't matter. Even during the grace period, you are technically late, and depending on your loan terms, interest may continue to accrue. It is better to pay on or before the actual due date.

Late payment consequences can be significant. If your payment is not received by the end of the grace period, a late fee applies. Late fees vary but typically range from $10 to $25 or sometimes a percentage of your monthly payment. More importantly, a late payment is reported to credit bureaus, which damages your credit score. A single late payment can lower your score by 50 to 100 points, depending on your current credit profile. This affects your ability to borrow money in the future and may increase interest rates on other loans.

After a payment is 30 days late, the situation becomes more serious. At this point, Exeter Finance may report the delinquency to credit agencies. Your loan servicer may also begin collection efforts. After 60 days late, additional consequences mount. After 120 days of non-payment, the lender may initiate repossession of the vehicle. Repossession allows the lender to reclaim the vehicle to recover the loan amount. Once a vehicle is repossessed, you may still owe the difference between what the vehicle sells for at auction and the remaining loan balance.
