Learn About Maryland Driver's License Renewal Process

Overview of Maryland Driver's License Renewal

Maryland residents who hold a valid driver's license must renew it before it expires. The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) sets specific rules and timelines for this process. Understanding how Maryland driver's license renewal works helps residents stay informed about their responsibilities and options.

A Maryland driver's license typically remains valid for five years from the date it was issued. The expiration date appears clearly on the front of your license. When your license approaches expiration, the MVA does not automatically send renewal notices to your address, though some states do. This means keeping track of your expiration date is your responsibility.

Maryland offers multiple pathways for renewing a driver's license. Residents may renew in person at an MVA office, through the mail, or online. Each method has different requirements and timelines. The method you choose depends on your specific situation, such as whether your address has changed, whether you want to update your photo, or if your license was suspended or revoked.

The cost of renewing a Maryland driver's license varies based on the type of license and the renewal method. As of recent years, renewal fees generally range from $70 to $120 for a five-year license, though these amounts may change. Certain groups, such as military members or seniors, may have different fee structures.

Maryland law allows some residents to renew their licenses multiple times without visiting an MVA office in person. However, every few renewals, the MVA requires an in-person visit for updated identification verification and a new photograph. This requirement helps maintain accurate records and security standards.

Practical Takeaway: Check your driver's license expiration date now. Circle it on your calendar or set a phone reminder for two to three months before the expiration date. This gives you time to gather required documents and choose a renewal method that fits your schedule.

Online Renewal: Requirements and Process

Maryland's online renewal system offers convenience for many residents who meet specific requirements. The online process allows you to renew your license from home without visiting an MVA office. However, not everyone can renew online—certain situations require an in-person visit.

To renew online through the Maryland MVA website, your license must meet several conditions. Your current license must not be suspended, revoked, or expired for more than one year. Additionally, your address on file with the MVA must match your current residence. If you moved and have not updated your address, you cannot use online renewal and must visit an MVA office instead.

The online renewal process typically takes just a few minutes. You will need to provide your driver's license number, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. The system verifies your information against MVA records. You will also create or use an existing account through the Maryland MVA's online portal.

During online renewal, you may choose whether to keep your current photo on your license or request a new one. If you want a new photograph, you must schedule an in-person appointment at an MVA office. If you keep your existing photo, the process remains entirely online, and your new license will arrive by mail within two to three weeks.

Payment for online renewal occurs through a secure online system. The MVA accepts major credit cards and debit cards. After completing payment, you receive a confirmation number and email. Keep this confirmation for your records until your new license arrives.

Some residents cannot use online renewal at all. These include first-time license holders, people whose licenses have been suspended or revoked, those who want to change their license class, individuals with medical restrictions on their license, and people renewing after their license has been expired for more than one year. These situations require an in-person MVA visit.

Practical Takeaway: Before attempting online renewal, verify that your current address in the MVA system matches where you actually live. If you moved recently, update your address in person at an MVA office first, then return online to renew. This prevents rejection of your online renewal request.

In-Person Renewal at MVA Offices

Renewing your driver's license in person at a Maryland MVA office is necessary for certain situations and remains an option for all residents regardless of their circumstances. The in-person process takes longer than online renewal but provides immediate access to a new license, in most cases.

Maryland operates multiple MVA offices throughout the state in locations including Baltimore, Annapolis, Towson, Bowie, Silver Spring, Salisbury, and other cities. Each office serves residents in surrounding counties. Finding the MVA office nearest your home or workplace helps you plan your visit. The MVA website provides a location finder with addresses, phone numbers, hours of operation, and parking information for each office.

Before visiting an MVA office for renewal, gather required documents. You will need your current Maryland driver's license and proof of identity. Acceptable identity documents include a U.S. passport, passport card, birth certificate, military ID, or permanent resident card. You should also bring proof of your current address, such as a utility bill, bank statement, or lease agreement dated within the past 60 days.

MVA offices typically operate on a first-come, first-served basis, though some locations offer appointment scheduling. Taking a number upon arrival and waiting for your turn is standard procedure at busy locations. Wait times vary depending on the time of day and day of week. Early mornings and midweek visits generally have shorter waits than afternoons or weekends. As of recent data, average wait times at busy offices can range from 30 minutes to over two hours during peak periods.

When you reach the counter, an MVA employee will verify your information, check your documents, and take your new photograph. You will review your license information for accuracy. During an in-person visit, you can also update your address if it has changed, modify any medical restrictions or license conditions, or change your license class. The new physical license prints on the spot in most cases and is issued before you leave the office.

Some MVA offices offer expedited service for an additional fee, which reduces wait time. Additionally, certain MVA office locations provide Saturday hours for those who cannot visit during the week. Calling ahead to confirm hours and current wait times helps you plan your visit more effectively.

Practical Takeaway: Gather all required documents—current license, proof of identity, and proof of address—and place them in one folder before your MVA visit. Bring extra copies of your proof of address. This preparation prevents delays and rejection of incomplete applications at the counter.

Mail Renewal: Timeline and Considerations

Maryland residents may renew their driver's license by mail in certain situations. This method allows you to avoid traveling to an MVA office but requires planning ahead due to processing and delivery times. Mail renewal takes longer than in-person or online renewal, sometimes spanning four to six weeks from the time you mail your materials until you receive your new license.

Not everyone can renew by mail. Your current license must not be suspended or revoked. Your license cannot be expired for more than one year. Additionally, you cannot use mail renewal if you want to change your address, change your license class, add or modify medical restrictions, or obtain a new photograph. If any of these situations apply to you, in-person renewal is required.

To renew by mail, start by obtaining a renewal form from the Maryland MVA website. The form is called the Application for Maryland Driver's License or Permit. Print and complete the form by hand using black or blue ink. Sign the form in the signature box—a digital signature or printed name is not acceptable.

Include with your form your current Maryland driver's license, a check or money order for the renewal fee payable to "Maryland MVA," and proof of your address on file. Do not send cash through the mail. Acceptable proof of address includes a recent utility bill, bank statement, or government mail addressed to you at your current address.

Mail your materials to the address provided on the MVA website for mail renewals. Keep a copy of your form and record the date you mail your renewal. Processing times at the MVA mailroom range from two to four weeks under normal circumstances. After processing, your new license prints and mails to your address, which adds another one to two weeks. During busy periods, such as summer months, processing may take longer.

You can track the status of your mail renewal on the MVA website if you have created an online account. Entering your application confirmation number allows you to monitor progress. If you do not receive your new license within six weeks of mailing your
