Learn About MVB Bank and How It Works

What Is MVB Bank and Its Basic Overview

MVB Bank is a community-focused financial institution headquartered in Fairmont, West Virginia. Founded in 1900, the bank has operated for over 120 years, serving customers across multiple states. MVB Bank is a state-chartered bank regulated by the West Virginia Division of Financial Institutions and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), meaning customer deposits receive federal protection up to $250,000 per account category.

The bank operates through a network of physical branches primarily located in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia, while also offering online banking services to customers nationwide. MVB Bank serves both individual consumers and small to medium-sized businesses. The institution focuses on traditional banking services rather than specialized investment products, making it a straightforward option for basic financial needs.

As a smaller regional bank, MVB operates differently from large national institutions. Smaller banks typically maintain closer relationships with their local communities and may offer more flexible policies compared to major chains. However, they also have fewer branches and ATM networks than larger competitors, which affects convenience depending on where you live or travel.

MVB Bank's ownership structure changed in 2021 when a group of investors acquired the institution. This transition affected some service offerings and fee structures. Understanding the bank's history and regulatory status helps you know what protections apply to your money and what services are actually available.

Practical Takeaway: Before opening an account, verify current branch locations near your home or workplace. Check whether the bank's service area matches where you conduct most of your banking activity.

How MVB Bank Accounts Work and Account Types

MVB Bank offers several account types designed for different banking needs. The main categories include checking accounts, savings accounts, and money market accounts. Each account type serves a specific purpose in managing your money, and understanding the differences helps you choose what works best for your situation.

Checking accounts function as transaction accounts where you deposit paychecks, pay bills, and make everyday purchases. These accounts typically come with a debit card, check book, and online access. Most checking accounts at MVB Bank require a minimum opening deposit, though specific amounts vary based on the account product. Some accounts charge monthly maintenance fees unless you meet certain requirements, such as maintaining a minimum balance or setting up direct deposit.

Savings accounts operate differently from checking accounts. While checking accounts prioritize transaction frequency, savings accounts encourage you to keep money sitting in the account to earn interest. MVB Bank's savings accounts pay interest on your balance, meaning the bank pays you a small percentage of your money each month. The interest rate varies based on market conditions and the specific account product. Savings accounts typically allow fewer monthly withdrawals than checking accounts under federal regulations, though this rule has become less strictly enforced in recent years.

Money market accounts combine features of both checking and savings accounts. They usually pay higher interest rates than basic savings accounts but may require larger minimum balances. Money market accounts often come with a limited number of checks you can write monthly, making them suitable if you want modest transaction capability along with interest earnings.

Additional account features available at MVB Bank may include overdraft protection, which links your checking to a savings account to prevent bounced checks; joint account options that allow multiple owners; and accounts designed for specific purposes like education savings. The specific features and fees associated with each account type can change, so reviewing current account disclosures before opening an account provides accurate information about what you're getting.

Practical Takeaway: List your typical monthly transactions and whether you need to earn interest on your balance. This clarifies whether you need a checking account, savings account, or combination of both.

Understanding MVB Bank's Fees and Cost Structure

Like all banks, MVB Bank charges fees for various services. Understanding these fees helps you avoid surprises and make cost-effective banking decisions. Fee structures vary by account type and service, so reviewing your specific account's fee schedule provides the most accurate information about what you'll pay.

Monthly maintenance fees represent the most common banking cost. Many checking and savings accounts charge a monthly fee ranging from $0 to $10 or more, depending on the account tier and features. However, banks often waive these fees if you meet certain conditions. Common fee waivers include maintaining a minimum balance (typically $500 to $2,500), setting up direct deposit, or keeping a linked savings account with the bank. Some accounts marketed toward students or seniors offer reduced or eliminated fees regardless of balance.

Transaction-related fees occur when you use specific banking services. Overdraft fees apply when you spend more money than you have in your account, and these fees typically range from $25 to $35 per overdraft incident. Insufficient funds fees work similarly and may be charged in addition to overdraft fees. ATM fees apply if you use ATMs outside MVB Bank's network, though the amount varies depending on whether the ATM owner charges a fee (MVB may charge its own fee in addition). Wire transfer fees apply when you send money electronically outside the bank, typically costing $15 to $25 depending on whether the transfer goes domestic or international.

Other potential fees include stop payment requests (preventing a check from clearing), check printing, cashier's checks, and account research fees for looking up past transactions. Some banks charge fees for statements printed on paper rather than viewed online, and fees may apply if you close an account within a certain timeframe of opening it.

The most important step for managing fees involves reviewing your account's fee schedule before opening the account and understanding which fees might apply to your specific banking pattern. Many banks publish these schedules online, and customer service representatives can explain fees and ways to avoid them.

Practical Takeaway: Calculate whether meeting fee-waiver conditions (like direct deposit or minimum balance) costs you more than simply paying the monthly fee. For example, if avoiding a $10 monthly fee requires maintaining a $5,000 minimum balance that earns 0.01% interest, you're effectively paying the bank to hold your money.

MVB Bank's Digital Banking Services and Online Access

MVB Bank provides online and mobile banking services that allow you to manage your account without visiting a physical branch. These digital services include checking balances, transferring money between accounts, paying bills, depositing checks through mobile photo capture, and viewing transaction history.

The online banking platform is accessible through a web browser on computers and tablets. You log in with a username and password to reach your account dashboard. From there, you can view your current balance, review recent transactions, download statements, and make various account changes. Most people find web-based banking works best for more complex transactions or when you have a larger screen available.

The mobile app provides similar functionality optimized for smartphones. MVB's mobile app allows you to check balances, transfer money, pay bills, and deposit checks by taking photos of both the front and back of the check. Mobile deposit represents a significant convenience feature—instead of visiting a branch to deposit a check, you simply photograph it through the app, and the funds typically appear in your account within one to two business days. The mobile app also sends notifications about account activity, low balances, or large transactions, helping you stay aware of your account status.

Mobile and online banking security involves several protective measures. Most banks, including MVB, use encryption to protect information traveling between your device and their servers. You should use strong passwords combining uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Many banks also offer two-factor authentication, an extra security step requiring you to verify your identity through a second method like a text message code before logging in.

Bill pay services through online banking allow you to schedule payments to businesses and individuals directly from your account. You enter the recipient's information and payment amount, and the bank processes the payment on the date you specify. Some payments arrive within one to three business days, while others take longer depending on the recipient and payment method used.

While digital banking provides convenience, some situations still require visiting a physical branch. Opening new accounts, obtaining cashier's checks, accessing safe deposit boxes, or depositing large amounts of cash typically require in-person visits. The availability of digital services means you don't need to visit a branch for routine transactions, but understanding which services require a physical location helps you plan your banking approach.

Practical Takeaway: Set up mobile deposit so you can deposit checks without traveling to a branch. Keep your login information secure and enable any available two-factor authentication features.
