Learn About Transferring Southwest Rapid Rewards Points
Understanding Southwest Rapid Rewards Points and How They Work
Southwest Airlines' Rapid Rewards program is a loyalty system that lets customers earn points on flights and other purchases. These points can be redeemed for airline tickets, upgrades, and other rewards. The program operates differently from traditional frequent flyer miles because Southwest doesn't charge baggage fees—so the value proposition centers on getting free or discounted flights through point accumulation.

Points are earned through several channels. When you fly Southwest, you earn points based on the fare type purchased and distance traveled. A basic economy ticket might earn fewer points than a premium economy ticket on the same route. Beyond flights, you can earn Rapid Rewards points through the Southwest credit card, by staying at partner hotels, renting cars through partner companies, or shopping through the Rapid Rewards shopping portal. Some customers earn thousands of points annually just from credit card spending and everyday purchases outside of flying.
The current earning structure shows that points don't expire as long as your account has activity within 24 months. Activity includes flying Southwest, earning points through any method, or redeeming points. This means inactive accounts may lose accumulated points, but active members have flexibility in when they use their balance. The point values vary—a domestic flight might require anywhere from 6,000 to 25,000 points depending on the route, time of year, and demand.
Understanding the mechanics of point accumulation helps you make informed decisions about how you travel and spend money. If you frequently fly Southwest or plan to, knowing how different purchase types earn points allows you to maximize your account growth. Similarly, understanding that points don't expire with regular activity means you can plan redemptions over time rather than rushing to use them.
Practical takeaway: Track how you currently earn points—whether through flights, credit card purchases, or partner transactions—to understand your account's growth rate and plan future travel accordingly.
Official Rules and Restrictions on Point Transfers
Southwest Rapid Rewards has specific policies about transferring points between accounts. Currently, Southwest does not allow direct account-to-account transfers of Rapid Rewards points. This means you cannot simply move points from your account to another person's account through the airline's system. This policy differs from some other airline loyalty programs that do permit point transfers, sometimes with fees.

The restriction applies regardless of your relationship to the other person. Whether you want to transfer points to a family member, friend, or spouse, Southwest's system doesn't provide a transfer mechanism. This is an important detail because many travelers assume all loyalty programs function similarly, but each airline sets its own rules.
However, there are alternative methods to share the value of your Rapid Rewards points with others. One approach involves purchasing tickets for another person using your points. You can book a flight for someone else and name them as the passenger, effectively using your points to provide them with travel. The ticket remains in their name and is tied to their reservation.
Another option relates to the Southwest credit card. If you and another person both have the credit card, you can each earn points independently on your own spending. Some credit card offers include bonus points for new cardholders, which means multiple people applying for cards contributes to separate point pools. Additionally, Southwest occasionally runs promotions allowing points to be earned at elevated rates for specific activities—these can be accessed independently by multiple cardholders.
Understanding these restrictions prevents frustration and allows you to explore legitimate alternatives. Some travelers purchase gift cards from Southwest instead, which can be given to others to use toward tickets. While this isn't a direct point transfer, it achieves a similar outcome of sharing travel benefits.
Practical takeaway: Since direct point transfers aren't possible, consider booking flights for others using your points or exploring credit card options if you want to share Rapid Rewards benefits.
How to Book Flights for Others Using Your Rapid Rewards Points
Booking flights for other people using your Rapid Rewards points is straightforward and follows the same process as booking for yourself. You access your account through Southwest's website or mobile app, search for available flights, and proceed to the booking screen. When selecting passengers, you enter the name of the person flying—this doesn't need to match the name on your Rapid Rewards account. The key requirement is that you're paying with your own points balance.

The booking process requires the passenger's first name, last name, and date of birth. You'll also need their contact information, typically an email address, so Southwest can send them their booking confirmation. The passenger can then check in for their flight using the confirmation number provided. They can check in online 24 hours before departure, use the Southwest app, or check in at the airport.
When you use your points to book for someone else, the ticket is in their name. This means they can make certain changes to their reservation, such as selecting a different time on the same day if they want to modify their travel plans. However, only the person whose name is on the ticket can use it—it can't be transferred to someone else. This is a standard airline policy across the industry.
One important consideration is the Companion Pass, a separate Southwest benefit that allows a designated person to fly free on any ticket you purchase (using points or cash). If you have a Companion Pass and book a flight using points, your designated companion can fly on the same flights for just the taxes and fees—typically around $5.60 per person each way. This can significantly extend the value of your point redemptions.
The flexibility of booking for others means your Rapid Rewards points can support trips for family members or friends. Many parents accumulate points and redeem them for their children's flights. The process takes minutes and requires no special authorization beyond your account access.
Practical takeaway: When you want to share your points value, use them to book flights directly for the traveler's name—the booking takes place through your account but the ticket belongs to them.
Understanding Rapid Rewards Points Values and Redemption Options
Rapid Rewards points have variable redemption values depending on when and where you want to travel. Southwest uses a revenue-based pricing model, meaning point requirements fluctuate based on current ticket prices. A flight that costs $150 in points during off-peak times might require 20,000 points during peak travel seasons. This contrasts with fixed-price loyalty programs where the same route always costs the same number of points.

The current point redemption landscape shows that domestic round-trip flights typically range from 12,000 to 50,000 points. A short regional flight during low-demand periods might cost 6,000 one-way points, while premium routes or holiday travel can reach 25,000 or more for a single leg. International flights require higher point values, generally starting around 25,000 points one-way and increasing based on distance and demand.
Beyond flights, Rapid Rewards points can be redeemed for cabin upgrades, seat selections, and early boarding. An upgrade from standard boarding to A-List Priority might cost 1,000 to 3,000 points depending on flight length and demand. These options appeal to frequent flyers who want to enhance specific trips without waiting to accumulate enough points for a free ticket.
Points also convert to gift cards in some scenarios, though this is typically not the most efficient redemption. A common conversion rate shows that points used for gift cards have lower value than points used for flights. For example, 10,000 points might convert to an $80-$90 gift card rather than the $100-$120 worth of ticket value they could provide.
Calculating your personal point value helps determine whether accumulating to a particular threshold makes sense. If you value your points at one cent per point, then 15,000 points equals roughly $150 in redemption value. If flights you'd normally take cost $200, accumulating 20,000 points gets you close to a free ticket. Understanding this helps you assess whether credit card bonuses, shopping portal earnings, and flight earnings align with your actual travel plans.
Practical takeaway: Track current redemption rates for routes you typically fly to understand how many points you need to accumulate for your desired trips.
Maximizing Rapid Rewards Points Through Credit Cards and Partner Programs
The Southwest credit card is the primary tool for accelerating point accumulation outside of actual flying. Current offerings include several card versions, each with different earning structures and sign-up bonuses. A typical sign-up bonus offers 40,000 to 75,000 bonus points after meeting a minimum spending requirement
