Learn About U-Haul Senior Discount Options
Understanding U-Haul Senior Discount Programs
U-Haul, one of the largest equipment rental companies in North America, offers various discount options that may be available to customers aged 55 and older. These discounts are designed to provide reduced rates on truck rentals, moving equipment, and storage services. The company has structured its senior discount program to work alongside other promotional offers, though the specifics can vary by location and season.

Senior discounts at U-Haul typically apply to one-way and local truck rentals, as well as equipment like dollies, hand trucks, and furniture pads. The discount percentage can range from around 5% to 10% off standard rates, though this varies depending on current promotions and your specific rental needs. Unlike some other rental companies, U-Haul does not require membership fees to access senior discounts, making them available to anyone who meets the age requirement at the time of rental.
The senior discount program works as a straightforward reduction applied at checkout. When you provide your age during the reservation process or at the rental counter, the discount is calculated based on the total rental cost. It's important to note that this discount may not combine with certain other promotions or special offers, so understanding how discounts layer together can help you maximize savings.
U-Haul operates over 20,000 locations across the United States and Canada, which means senior discounts are theoretically available at most of these facilities. However, individual franchise locations may have different policies regarding discount combinations and minimum rental requirements. This geographic reach makes the senior discount a widely available option for older adults who need rental services.
Practical Takeaway: Before booking, confirm with your specific U-Haul location whether the senior discount applies to your rental type and learn how it combines with any current promotions to ensure you receive the best possible rate.
Age Requirements and How to Access the Discount
To access U-Haul's senior discount, you must be at least 55 years old at the time of your rental. This age threshold is standard across most U-Haul locations and applies whether you're renting locally or making a one-way move. Unlike some programs that require proof of membership or enrollment in advance, U-Haul's senior discount is available simply by being within the qualifying age range and requesting it during your reservation or at rental.

When making a reservation by phone, online, or in person, you can mention that you're interested in the senior discount. The U-Haul representative will ask for your birth date to confirm your age. You'll need to provide this same information at the rental counter if you made an online booking. Having your driver's license or another form of identification with your date of birth will expedite this process, though it's typically just a verbal confirmation rather than a requirement to show documentation.
The discount can be mentioned at several points in the rental process. If you're booking online through U-Haul's website, you may find a field during checkout where you can note you're requesting senior pricing. When calling their reservation line at 1-800-468-4285, you can tell the representative about your age before they calculate your quote. And if you prefer to visit a location in person, staff members can apply the discount when they help you process your rental.
One important detail: the person renting the truck must be the one who is 55 or older. If you're renting equipment for someone else who might be younger, the discount would not typically apply. However, if you're 55 and renting the truck yourself, you can use it to help move for a family member or friend. The discount is tied to the person whose name is on the rental agreement.
Practical Takeaway: Have your birth date readily available when contacting U-Haul, and mention your age early in the reservation process to ensure the discount is included in your initial quote and final bill.
Typical Discount Amounts and What They Cover
U-Haul's senior discounts typically range from 5% to 10% off the standard rental rate, though the exact percentage can fluctuate based on location, season, and current promotional campaigns. During peak moving season (May through September), discounts may be smaller or combined with other restrictions. During slower periods, U-Haul may offer larger senior discounts as an incentive to rent during those times. The discount generally applies to the base rental rate rather than to insurance, equipment, or fuel charges.

The discount covers various truck sizes and rental types. Whether you're renting a cargo van, 10-foot truck, 15-foot truck, 20-foot truck, or larger moving trucks, the senior discount typically applies to all of them. Similarly, local rentals and one-way rentals (where you pick up in one city and drop off in another) are usually eligible. This broad coverage means the discount isn't limited to a specific truck size or rental duration.
Equipment rentals often receive the same discount treatment. Items like dollies, hand trucks, furniture pads, and moving blankets may all have the senior discount applied. However, certain add-on services like insurance packages, GPS units, or packing supplies might not be discounted. The discount also typically does not reduce the Environmental Fee or other facility fees that U-Haul charges.
To understand what a 5% to 10% discount means in real terms, consider these examples: A three-day local truck rental that would normally cost $150 could be reduced to approximately $135-$142.50 with the senior discount. A one-way truck rental from one state to another that normally costs $800 might be reduced to $720-$760. While these savings may seem modest, they add up, especially for longer rentals or larger trucks. Over the course of multiple moves throughout retirement, these discounts can result in substantial savings.
Practical Takeaway: Calculate what your rental would cost before and after the senior discount to understand your actual savings, and ask about any current promotions that might provide better value than the standard senior discount during your rental period.
Comparing U-Haul Senior Discounts with Competitor Options
While U-Haul is the largest equipment rental company in the United States, other major rental companies also offer senior discounts that may be worth comparing. Penske Truck Rental, Budget Truck Rental, Home Depot moving truck rentals, and Home Depot's partnership with U-Haul all have their own discount structures for older adults. Understanding how U-Haul's offers compare can help you determine which company offers the best value for your specific moving or rental needs.

Penske Truck Rental typically offers senior discounts of around 5% to 10%, similar to U-Haul's range. However, Penske often emphasizes newer trucks and different maintenance schedules. Budget Truck Rental may offer comparable discount percentages but operates fewer locations than U-Haul, which can affect availability in rural areas. Home Depot's truck rental program, which operates in partnership with U-Haul, offers the same senior discounts as U-Haul itself since they use U-Haul's equipment and systems.
One key difference between rental companies involves discount stacking and availability during peak seasons. Some competitors may allow you to combine senior discounts with AAA membership discounts or other promotions, while others may restrict discount combinations. U-Haul's policies on discount combinations vary by location. Additionally, the base rental rates among these companies can differ significantly, meaning that a 10% discount from one company on a lower base rate might result in less savings than a 5% discount from another company on a higher base rate.
Geographic availability also matters. U-Haul operates approximately 20,000 locations, while Penske has around 900 locations. This means U-Haul is far more accessible in rural and suburban areas. If you're renting in a smaller town, U-Haul may be your only option, making the comparison less relevant. However, if you're moving between major cities, you may have multiple options and should compare actual quotes from each company.
Practical Takeaway: Obtain quotes from at least two to three rental companies using your specific rental dates and route, and ask each company directly about their senior discount policies and any current promotions to find the option with the lowest total cost.
