Learn About WiFi Calling on Your Phone

What Is WiFi Calling and How Does It Work

WiFi calling is a phone feature that lets you make and receive calls using an internet connection instead of your cellular network. When you use WiFi calling, your voice is converted into data packets and sent through a WiFi network to reach the other person. This technology has been around since the mid-2000s, but became widely available on mainstream smartphones around 2015.

The basic process works like this: when you make a call on a phone with WiFi calling enabled, your phone checks whether you're connected to a WiFi network. If you are, the call can be routed through that internet connection. Your voice is compressed into digital information, transmitted through the internet to your phone carrier's network, and then sent to the recipient's phone through their carrier. The entire process happens in real time, similar to how a regular cellular call works.

Most major phone carriers in the United States offer WiFi calling, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and many regional carriers. The feature is built into most modern smartphones, including iPhones (starting with iPhone 6), Android phones (availability varies by manufacturer), and some older devices through software updates. On iPhones, the feature is called WiFi Calling. On Android devices, it may be labeled WiFi Calling, WiFi Calling over IPBased on the device and carrier.

The technology relies on a system called Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP. VoIP converts your voice into packets of data that travel across the internet. This is the same technology used by services like Skype and Google Meet, though carrier-based WiFi calling is designed to work just like a regular phone call from the user's perspective. The quality of your call depends on the strength of your WiFi connection and how much bandwidth is available.

WiFi calling is particularly useful in areas where cellular reception is weak but WiFi is available. This might include basements, buildings with thick walls, rural areas with limited cell towers, or locations far from your carrier's network infrastructure. The feature can also be valuable when traveling internationally, as you may be able to use your regular phone number without expensive international roaming charges.

Practical Takeaway: WiFi calling lets you make regular phone calls using internet instead of cell towers, and works on most modern smartphones through a process that converts your voice into internet data.

Checking Whether Your Phone Supports WiFi Calling

Before you can use WiFi calling, you need to confirm that both your phone and your carrier support the feature. Most phones made in the last five to seven years have WiFi calling capabilities, but not all. Similarly, while major carriers offer WiFi calling, it may not be supported on every plan or may have certain restrictions.

For iPhone users, WiFi calling is supported on iPhone 6 and newer models. This includes all iPhone models from iPhone 6 through the latest versions. To check if your iPhone supports WiFi calling, you can visit Apple's official website or check your device settings. Go to Settings, then Cellular, and look for a WiFi Calling option. If this option appears, your iPhone has the feature. You can also call your carrier's customer service line to confirm your specific plan supports it.

Android users should check the manufacturer's website for their specific phone model. Samsung Galaxy phones generally support WiFi calling on models from the Galaxy S5 and newer, though this varies. Google Pixel phones support WiFi calling on most recent models. Other manufacturers like OnePlus, Motorola, and LG also offer the feature on many recent devices. To check on an Android phone, go to Settings, then search for "WiFi Calling" or look under Network or Connectivity options. If the option isn't visible in settings, your phone may not support the feature.

Your carrier also must support WiFi calling on your specific plan. Contact your carrier directly to confirm. Some carriers may offer WiFi calling on postpaid plans but not prepaid plans, or on certain tiers of service. When you call, have your account number or phone number ready. The carrier can tell you in minutes whether WiFi calling is included with your service.

If your phone doesn't support built-in WiFi calling, you still have options. You can use third-party apps that provide WiFi calling functionality, such as Google Voice, WhatsApp, Skype, or Facebook Messenger. These apps allow video and voice calls over WiFi, though they may not use your regular phone number and may have different features than carrier-based WiFi calling.

Practical Takeaway: Check your phone model and carrier plan to confirm WiFi calling support by looking in settings or contacting your carrier directly.

Turning On WiFi Calling on Your Device

Once you've confirmed that your phone and carrier support WiFi calling, turning on the feature usually takes just a few minutes. The process differs slightly between iPhones and Android devices, but both are straightforward. You don't need any special equipment or technical knowledge to turn on WiFi calling.

For iPhone users, start by opening the Settings app. Tap on Cellular, then look for WiFi Calling near the top of the menu. You should see a toggle switch next to "WiFi Calling." Tap the toggle to turn it on. Your phone may display a message explaining that WiFi calling will use your internet connection instead of your cellular network. After you turn on WiFi calling, your phone will need to be connected to a WiFi network for this feature to work. Once enabled, a small WiFi symbol will appear next to your signal bars when you're on a WiFi network and WiFi calling is active.

For Android devices, the steps are similar but may vary depending on your manufacturer and carrier. Generally, open Settings and look for Network & Internet or Connections. Then find WiFi Calling or a similar option. This may be under Mobile Networks or Cellular Networks depending on your phone. Once you find it, toggle the setting on. Some Android phones may ask you to provide your address or confirm your location when you turn on WiFi calling for the first time. This is because WiFi calling is required to have accurate location information for emergency services.

When you turn on WiFi calling, your phone will likely ask you to accept terms and conditions from your carrier. Read through these if you want to, or you can proceed. Your carrier may also send you a confirmation text message or email once WiFi calling is activated on your account. This usually happens within a few minutes, though it can take up to 24 hours in some cases.

After turning on WiFi calling, test the feature by making a call to a friend or family member while connected to WiFi. Ask them if the call quality sounds normal. You should notice that the call works just like a regular cellular call. If you experience problems, try moving closer to your WiFi router or restarting your phone. You can turn off WiFi calling at any time by going back to the settings and toggling the feature off.

Practical Takeaway: Enable WiFi calling in Settings on iPhone under Cellular or on Android under Network & Internet, and the feature will be ready to use when you're connected to WiFi.

Understanding Call Quality and Network Performance

The quality of your WiFi calls depends directly on the strength and speed of your internet connection. A strong WiFi signal and adequate bandwidth will give you crystal-clear calls that sound indistinguishable from regular cellular calls. A weak WiFi connection or a network that's overloaded with traffic may result in delayed audio, echoing, or dropped calls.

WiFi calling typically requires upload and download speeds of at least 2.5 megabits per second (Mbps) for good quality voice calls, according to technical standards. However, you don't need extremely fast internet. Standard residential WiFi connections typically offer speeds well above this minimum. If you have multiple people streaming video or playing online games on the same network, however, the available bandwidth for your call may decrease, potentially affecting call quality.

The location of your WiFi router matters significantly. Walls, furniture, and other obstacles can weaken the signal. If you're making a WiFi call in a basement or far from your router, you may experience problems. Moving closer to the router usually improves call quality noticeably. You should also keep your phone away from other electronics that transmit radio signals, such as microwaves or cordless phones, as these can interfere with WiFi reception.

When your phone detects that WiFi calling quality is degrading, it may automatically switch to cellular calling if cellular service is available. This handoff usually happens smoothly without dropping the call.
