Learn How Facebook Algorithm Settings Work

What the Facebook Algorithm Actually Does

Facebook's algorithm is a set of computer rules that decides which posts, videos, photos, and advertisements appear in your News Feed. Think of it like a filter that looks at millions of pieces of content and tries to figure out which ones you'll find most interesting. The algorithm doesn't show you everything posted by your friends and pages you follow—instead, it ranks content and displays what it thinks matters most to you.

The Facebook algorithm serves one main purpose: to keep you on the platform longer by showing you posts that spark engagement. When you interact with content by liking, commenting, or sharing, the algorithm notices this and learns about your preferences. If you frequently engage with posts about cooking, the algorithm will show you more cooking-related content. If you scroll past fitness videos without looking at them, you'll see fewer of those posts.

Facebook's parent company, Meta, has disclosed that the algorithm considers hundreds of signals when ranking content. These signals include how recently something was posted, who posted it, what type of post it is, and how other people similar to you have interacted with it. The algorithm also considers the relationships between people—posts from close friends and family members typically rank higher than posts from pages you follow occasionally.

One important thing to understand is that the algorithm changes frequently. Meta's engineers constantly update how the ranking system works based on user behavior data and company priorities. What determined your News Feed six months ago may not be the same today. This means the content you see can shift significantly over time, even if your friend list and followed pages remain the same.

Practical Takeaway: Your News Feed is not a complete, chronological list of all posts from people you follow. It's a curated selection chosen by an algorithm designed to maximize your time spent on the platform. Understanding this helps explain why you might miss posts from close friends or why certain content appears repeatedly.

How Facebook Tracks Your Behavior and Interests

Facebook collects detailed information about how you use the platform, and this data directly influences what the algorithm shows you. Every action you take—every like, comment, share, click, and video you watch—gets recorded and analyzed. Additionally, Facebook tracks actions you take away from the platform using tracking pixels and cookies on websites and apps across the internet.

When you visit a website that has a Facebook pixel installed (a piece of code that tracks your activity), Facebook records what products you looked at, what pages you visited, and how long you stayed on each page. Many major retailers, news sites, and online businesses use this tracking technology. This means Facebook knows about your shopping habits, what news articles interest you, and what videos you watch on other websites. Over 20 million websites reportedly use Facebook's tracking technology.

Facebook also collects information from your device itself. If you have the Facebook app installed, it can access your phone's location data, contacts, and browsing history, depending on what permissions you've granted. The company uses this information to build a detailed profile about you that includes your interests, behaviors, shopping habits, and location patterns. This profile informs what content appears in your News Feed and what advertisements you see.

The algorithm particularly pays attention to "dwell time"—how long you spend looking at a specific post before scrolling past it. If you pause on a video for several seconds, the algorithm registers that as positive engagement. If you scroll quickly past certain types of posts, the algorithm learns that you're not interested in that content. Facebook also tracks whether you return to look at the same post again or whether you share it with others.

Your search history within Facebook is also tracked. Every search you perform and every profile you visit gets recorded. If you frequently search for content related to specific topics or follow accounts in certain categories, the algorithm uses this information to show you more similar content. This creates personalized patterns in your News Feed that may be unique to your account.

Practical Takeaway: Your algorithmic experience on Facebook is based on extensive tracking of your behavior both on and off the platform. Being aware of what Facebook tracks helps explain why your News Feed looks different from someone else's News Feed, even though you have many mutual friends.

Understanding the News Feed Ranking System

Facebook's News Feed ranking system uses multiple scoring mechanisms to decide which posts appear first, which appear lower, and which don't appear at all. The company has explained that posts are ranked based on predicted "engagement probability"—essentially, a calculation of whether you're likely to interact with a post.

The algorithm estimates engagement through several key factors. First, it looks at the relationships involved. Posts from people you interact with frequently (those you message, whose posts you like often) rank higher than posts from acquaintances. If you regularly comment on someone's posts, their new content will more likely appear in your feed. The algorithm also considers recency—newer posts generally rank higher than older ones, though this isn't a hard rule. Sometimes older posts can resurface if they're getting new engagement.

Post type matters significantly in Facebook's ranking system. The company has stated that video content generally receives higher ranking than images, which rank higher than text-only posts. Videos that people watch for longer periods perform better in the algorithm. Live videos receive a boost in the ranking, and videos that people share with others get additional visibility. Facebook has been pushing video content for years because the algorithm prioritizes it and because users tend to spend more time watching videos than consuming other content types.

Engagement from others influences what you see. If a post gets many likes, comments, and shares from the broader Facebook community, it signals to the algorithm that the content is interesting. The algorithm then shows it to more people, including those who haven't engaged with the original poster before. However, not all engagement is weighted equally. A comment is typically weighted more heavily than a like because comments indicate deeper engagement.

Facebook also uses something called "Context Optimization," which means the algorithm considers what you're currently doing on the platform. If you just logged in, you might see different content than if you've been scrolling for 20 minutes. The algorithm adjusts what it shows based on your current session and recent behavior patterns.

Negative signals also affect ranking. If you frequently hide posts from a particular person or page, the algorithm will show you fewer posts from that source. If you report content as spam, the algorithm learns to deprioritize similar content. This feedback mechanism allows the algorithm to refine what it shows based on explicit signals about your preferences.

Practical Takeaway: The News Feed ranking system is complex and considers your relationships, post type, engagement, and feedback signals. Posts don't appear randomly—they're ordered based on predicted likelihood that you'll engage with them, favoring video content and posts from people you interact with frequently.

How to Adjust Your News Feed and Algorithm Settings

Facebook provides several settings that let you influence what appears in your News Feed, though the company doesn't offer complete control over the algorithm itself. Understanding these options can help you shape your experience on the platform.

One basic control is the "See First" feature, which lets you tell Facebook which friends and pages you want to prioritize. When you mark a friend or page as "See First," their posts appear higher in your News Feed before other content. You can set multiple accounts as "See First," creating a prioritized list of content you want to see regularly. This directly contradicts the algorithm's automatic ranking, though the algorithm still influences which "See First" posts you see first among that group.

The "Unfollow" option lets you stop seeing posts from a friend, page, or group without unfriending them. When you unfollow someone, their posts won't appear in your News Feed, but you can still visit their profile and they won't receive a notification that you unfollowed them. This is useful for managing content without creating social awkwardness. You can also unfollow individual pages and groups that post too frequently or share content you don't enjoy.

Facebook's notification settings let you control what types of notifications you receive. You can adjust notifications for comments on your posts, friend requests, group invitations, and pages you follow. By managing notifications, you can control what draws your attention on the platform, which indirectly influences your engagement patterns and therefore what the algorithm shows you.

In your News Feed Preferences, accessible through the menu icon, you can see topics that the algorithm is prioritizing for you and adjust them. You can indicate which topics interest you more or less, though this feature's visibility and functionality varies by account. You can also choose to see posts from accounts in the order they were posted (reverse chronological) by adjusting your News Feed view, though Facebook encourages the algorithmic feed by default.
