Learn How to Build a Terrarium in Glass

Understanding the Basics of Terrarium Building

A terrarium is a glass container that holds a miniature ecosystem of plants and soil. The word "terrarium" comes from the Latin words "terra" (earth) and "arium" (place or container). Unlike traditional potted plants, terrariums create a closed or semi-closed environment where moisture cycles naturally, similar to how the water cycle works in nature. This self-sustaining system means you water your terrarium far less frequently than regular houseplants.

The terrarium concept became popular in the 1800s when English botanist Nathaniel Ward discovered that plants could thrive in sealed glass containers. This discovery changed plant cultivation, especially for people living in urban areas with limited outdoor space. Today, terrariums remain popular because they require minimal maintenance, look visually appealing, and work well in apartments, offices, and homes with limited natural light.

Terrariums work through a natural process called the water cycle. When you water the soil inside a sealed container, the water evaporates from the soil and plants. This moisture rises and condenses on the glass walls and lid. The water droplets then run back down to the soil, where the roots absorb them again. This cycle repeats, meaning many terrarium plants need watering only once every month or even less frequently.

There are several types of terrariums you can build. Closed terrariums trap most moisture inside, making them ideal for tropical plants and humidity-loving species. Open or semi-open terrariums allow more air circulation and work better for succulents and desert plants that prefer drier conditions. Your choice depends on which plants interest you and what aesthetic you prefer for your space.

Practical takeaway: Before starting your project, decide whether you want a closed system (better for tropical plants) or an open system (better for succulents). This choice will guide every other decision you make about your terrarium.

Selecting the Right Glass Container

The container you choose affects both how your terrarium functions and how it looks. Glass containers come in many shapes and sizes, from small cube-shaped tanks to large brandy snifters to tall rectangular boxes. The most important characteristic is that the glass must be clear so light can reach your plants and you can observe the ecosystem you create.

Container size matters for practical reasons. Smaller terrariums (under 6 inches wide) are easier to fit on shelves or desks and require less soil and fewer plants. However, they dry out faster and have less stable ecosystems. Larger terrariums (10 inches or wider) hold more soil, maintain moisture better, and allow room for multiple plants to create visual interest. A medium-sized terrarium of 8 to 12 inches wide offers a good balance between manageability and sustainability.

The shape of your container affects both aesthetics and function. Wide, shallow containers work well for succulents and cacti because they provide good air circulation. Tall containers with narrow openings suit tropical plants that prefer humidity but can be tricky to plant initially since the opening is small. Cube-shaped containers offer versatility and work with most plant types. Geometric glass containers with flat edges make terrarium building easier than round containers because you have more working space.

Container depth is crucial for plant health. You need at least 4 inches of depth to accommodate layers of drainage material and soil. Ideally, aim for containers that are 6 to 8 inches deep or more. This depth allows roots to grow properly and provides enough space for the layering system that keeps your terrarium healthy. Shallow containers restrict plant choices and make maintaining proper drainage more difficult.

When selecting a container, check that it has a removable lid or opening that allows you to reach inside for planting and maintenance. Some decorative glass containers are sealed or have very small openings that make initial setup and future plant adjustments nearly impossible. Test that any lid or door closes securely but not so tightly that you cannot open it again after assembly.

Practical takeaway: Choose a clear glass container that is at least 6 inches deep, between 8 and 12 inches wide, and has an opening large enough for your hand to reach inside for planting. Medium-sized cube or rectangular shapes offer the best combination of function and visual appeal.

Gathering Layering Materials and Tools

Building a terrarium requires several layers of different materials, each serving a specific purpose. Understanding what each layer does helps you create a healthy, long-lasting ecosystem. The layering system is what makes terrariums work effectively and prevents common problems like root rot or soggy soil.

The bottom layer is drainage material, typically pea gravel or small stones. This layer should be about 1 to 2 inches thick. Drainage material prevents water from pooling directly under the soil, which would cause plant roots to rot. Even in closed terrariums where moisture recycles, proper drainage is essential. The gravel allows excess water to flow away from the root zone while still being available for the plants to absorb as needed.

The second layer is activated charcoal, which should be about 0.5 to 1 inch thick. Activated charcoal absorbs odors and helps prevent mold and bacterial growth inside your sealed environment. This layer is particularly important for closed terrariums where air circulation is limited. You can purchase activated charcoal in the aquarium section of most pet stores or online. Do not use charcoal from a grill or fireplace, as these contain harmful chemicals.

The third layer is potting soil, which should be 2 to 3 inches thick depending on your plant choices. For closed terrariums with tropical plants, use soil that retains moisture well, such as a mixture of peat moss and perlite. For open terrariums with succulents, use well-draining cactus or succulent mix. The soil layer is where plant roots grow and where most of the nutrient exchange happens. Never use garden soil from outside, as it contains pests, diseases, and weed seeds that will flourish in a closed environment.

Beyond these three essential layers, gather a few tools for the building process. A small spoon or folded paper can help you scoop and pour materials into tight spaces. Tweezers or small tongs assist with positioning small plants, especially in containers with narrow openings. A spray bottle filled with water allows you to moisten the soil during setup. A small stick or dowel helps tamp down soil gently around plant roots. A funnel can help when pouring materials into containers with small openings.

Practical takeaway: Purchase or gather these materials before you start: pea gravel (1-2 inches worth), activated charcoal (0.5-1 inches worth), and appropriate potting soil (2-3 inches worth). These three layers form the foundation that keeps your terrarium healthy and functioning properly.

Choosing Plants That Thrive in Glass Containers

Plant selection is one of the most important decisions in terrarium building. Different plants have different needs for light, moisture, and air circulation. Choosing plants suited to your specific terrarium type and environment ensures they grow well and look attractive for years.

For closed terrariums that maintain high humidity, tropical plants perform exceptionally well. Fittonia, commonly called nerve plant, features striking veined leaves and adapts to low light. Peperomia species are compact, slow-growing, and come in varieties with different leaf patterns and colors. Mosses, including cushion moss and mood moss, create a forest floor appearance and thrive in moist, humid conditions. Small-leaved tropical plants like baby tears or Soleirolia soleirolii add delicate texture. Begonias with colorful foliage adapt well to terrarium conditions. Prayer plants (Maranta) display leaves that move throughout the day in response to light and humidity changes.

For open terrariums or those in drier conditions, succulents are the primary choice. These plants store water in their leaves and require minimal moisture. Echeveria species come in rosette shapes and various colors from green to purple to pink. Jade plants grow slowly and develop an attractive tree-like form. Aloe vera is practical and decorative. Haworthia species stay small and compact. Jade necklace (Senecio rowleyanus) creates a trailing effect. These plants tolerate lower humidity and need less frequent watering.

Consider the adult size of plants before selecting them for your terrarium. Small terrariums need plants that mature at 3
