Learn How to Change Autofill Settings on iPhone

Understanding iPhone Autofill and Why You Might Want to Change It

Autofill is a built-in iPhone feature that stores and automatically fills in your personal information across apps and websites. When you visit a website or open an app that requires information like your name, address, phone number, email, or payment details, your iPhone can fill these fields automatically without you typing them in manually. This feature saves time and reduces typing errors, but it also means your device is storing sensitive information.

Apple's autofill system uses information you've entered into your iPhone's contacts, calendars, and saved payment methods. According to Apple's privacy documentation, this data is stored locally on your device and encrypted. However, many users want to control exactly what information gets saved and shared. You might want to modify autofill settings if you share your iPhone with family members, want to prevent certain apps from accessing your personal data, or prefer not to store payment information on your device at all.

The autofill feature includes several categories: contact information (names, addresses, phone numbers, emails), passwords, and payment methods (credit cards and Apple Pay data). Each of these categories can be managed separately on your iPhone. Understanding how each one works will help you make informed decisions about your privacy and security settings.

Your iPhone runs autofill through iCloud Keychain when you're signed into your Apple ID. This means the settings you choose can sync across your other Apple devices, including your iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. If you want different autofill settings on different devices, you can adjust them individually on each device.

Practical Takeaway: Before changing any autofill settings, think about what information you want stored on your iPhone and which apps should have access to it. This awareness will guide your decisions as you work through the settings.

Accessing Autofill Settings in iPhone Settings

To begin changing your autofill settings, you need to open the Settings app on your iPhone. This is the gray icon with white gears that appears on your home screen. Tap it to open your device settings. From the main Settings screen, you'll see various options listed. Look for "Passwords" or "Passwords & Security" depending on your iOS version. This section contains most of your autofill controls.

The exact path may vary slightly based on your iPhone model and iOS version. If you have an older iPhone running iOS 13 or earlier, the autofill settings might be located under Settings > Safari > Passwords. On newer devices with iOS 14 or later, you'll typically find them under Settings > Passwords or Settings > Passwords & Security. Apple relocated these settings to make them more prominent and easier to find, reflecting the increased importance of password and data security.

Once you're in the Passwords section, you'll see options related to autofill. The main toggle you'll encounter is "AutoFill Passwords and Passcodes." This is the master switch that controls whether your iPhone fills in saved passwords across websites and apps. Below this, you might see options for "iCloud Keychain," which is Apple's encrypted password management system. Toggling iCloud Keychain on means your passwords sync securely across all your Apple devices.

Some autofill features might also appear in the Settings app under different sections. For instance, payment autofill settings are sometimes located in Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay, where you can see which credit cards and shipping addresses are saved. Safari-specific autofill settings may be found under Settings > Safari, which includes options for autofilling web forms with contact information and credit card data.

Practical Takeaway: Bookmark or remember the path to your autofill settings (Settings > Passwords or Settings > Passwords & Security). You'll need to access them again if you want to add, remove, or update stored information, so knowing exactly where to find them saves time.

Managing Password Autofill on Your iPhone

Password autofill is one of the most important autofill features because it directly affects your account security. When you save a password in your iPhone, it gets stored in iCloud Keychain, Apple's encrypted password vault. To turn password autofill on or off, go to Settings > Passwords & Security and look for the "AutoFill Passwords and Passcodes" toggle. Switching this off means your iPhone won't automatically fill in passwords on websites and apps, requiring you to enter them manually each time.

Many security experts recommend keeping password autofill enabled, as it encourages people to use unique, complex passwords for each account without worrying about remembering them. However, some users prefer to enter passwords manually for added security assurance, particularly for sensitive accounts like banking or email. There's no universally "correct" choice here—it depends on your personal comfort level and how you balance convenience against security.

Within the same Passwords & Security section, you can view all your saved passwords. Tap "Saved Passwords" or a similar option to see a list of websites and apps where you've stored login information. This list shows you exactly what data your iPhone has saved. You can tap on any entry to see the stored username and password (after verifying your identity with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode). If you see passwords you no longer need or recognize, you can delete them by swiping left on the entry and tapping delete.

You also have the option to add passwords manually to your iPhone. If you use a password outside of your iPhone's normal browsing and app activities, you can add it manually by tapping the "+" button in your Passwords list. This is useful for keeping all your passwords in one secure location. Additionally, if you generate a password using your iPhone's built-in password generator—which creates strong, random passwords—you can have it saved automatically.

Practical Takeaway: Regularly review your saved passwords by going to Settings > Passwords & Security > Saved Passwords. Delete any passwords you no longer use, and update ones for accounts where you've changed your login credentials. This keeps your password vault current and secure.

Controlling Contact and Payment Information Autofill

Beyond passwords, your iPhone can autofill contact details and payment information. To manage what contact information your iPhone saves and uses for autofill, go to Settings > Safari > Autofill (on some iOS versions) or Settings > Passwords & Security. Here you'll find toggles for "Names and Passwords," "Credit Cards," and "Contact Info." Each of these can be turned on or off independently. Turning off "Contact Info" autofill prevents websites and apps from automatically filling in your name, address, phone number, and email address.

If you want to keep contact autofill enabled but update which contact information gets saved, you'll need to edit your primary contact card in the Contacts app. Open Contacts, find your own contact card (usually marked with a "Me" label), and tap Edit. Update your information here, and these changes will be reflected in autofill. Some users maintain multiple contact entries—one with their full address and phone number for important services, and another with minimal information for casual websites.

Payment autofill is controlled through different settings depending on whether you use Apple Pay or just have credit cards saved in Safari. For Apple Pay, go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay. Here you can add, remove, or edit credit cards and shipping addresses. You can control which cards are available for contactless payments and which ones are used for autofill on websites. To remove a card entirely, swipe left on it and tap delete. For Safari credit card autofill specifically, navigate to Settings > Safari > Autofill and toggle "Credit Cards" on or off.

Many people prefer to keep credit card autofill turned off for websites, even if they use Apple Pay for in-app purchases and physical transactions. This adds an extra layer of protection because you have to consciously enter your payment information rather than it being filled in automatically. This reduces the risk of accidentally making purchases on unfamiliar or malicious websites. You can still benefit from Apple Pay's security features while maintaining this extra caution.

Practical Takeaway: If you share your iPhone with family members or use it in situations where others might have brief access, consider turning off contact and payment autofill. You can always turn these features back on when using the device alone.

Privacy Considerations and Security Best Practices

Storing personal information on your iPhone offers convenience, but it also concentrates sensitive data in one place. Understanding the security measures Apple uses can help you make informed decisions about what to store.
