Learn How to Change Your Amazon App Language

Understanding Amazon App Language Settings and Why You Might Want to Change Them

The Amazon app comes with a default language setting based on your device's system language or your Amazon account location. However, many users prefer to view the app in a different language for various reasons. You might be learning a new language and want practical experience reading product descriptions and reviews. Perhaps you're traveling to another country and want to browse Amazon in the local language. Some people manage multiple Amazon accounts in different regions and prefer switching the app language to match each account's location. Understanding how language settings work in the Amazon app is the first step toward customizing your shopping experience.

The Amazon app stores language preferences separately from your device settings, which means you can change the app's language without affecting how your phone or tablet operates overall. This separation gives you flexibility—your text messages, emails, and other apps might stay in English while your Amazon app displays in Spanish, French, German, or another supported language. Amazon supports approximately 20 different languages across various regions, though the specific languages available depend on which Amazon marketplace you're using. For example, Amazon.com in the United States offers different language options than Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.de.

The process of changing languages in the Amazon app is straightforward and takes only a few minutes. You won't lose any information, shopping history, wishlists, or saved addresses by changing the language. Your account data remains exactly the same—only the words and phrases displayed on your screen change. This means you can switch between languages as often as you like if you're bilingual or trilingual and want to practice different languages.

Practical Takeaway: Before changing your Amazon app language, think about which language you want to use most frequently and whether you want this change to affect only the app or also your account settings across Amazon's website. Understanding that language changes are reversible and don't affect your account data will help you feel confident making adjustments to match your preferences.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Changing Language on Android Devices

Android users have a straightforward path to changing their Amazon app language. Start by opening the Amazon app on your Android device. Look for the menu icon, which typically appears as three horizontal lines (sometimes called a "hamburger menu") in the upper left or right corner of the screen. The exact location depends on your app version and screen size. Tap this menu icon to open the main navigation menu where you'll see various options including "Your Account," "Browse," "Today's Deals," and other features.

Once the menu opens, scroll down until you find the "Settings" option. This is usually near the bottom of the menu list. Tap "Settings" to enter the preferences area. Within Settings, look for an option labeled "Language" or "Language Preferences"—this may sometimes appear as part of a "Region & Language" or "Display Preferences" section. When you tap on the language option, you'll see a list of available languages. This list shows only the languages that Amazon supports in your region. For instance, an Android device set to the US Amazon marketplace might show English, Spanish, and Portuguese as options, while a device in Europe might show additional European languages.

Select your preferred language from the list by tapping on it. The app will then reload, and all text, menus, product categories, and descriptions will appear in your chosen language. The change takes effect almost immediately. If you want to verify the change worked, look at familiar elements like the "Home" button or shopping cart—these should now display in your selected language. You can return to Settings and Language at any time if you want to switch back to another language.

Some Android devices also offer a secondary option: changing the system-wide language on your phone itself. Go to your Android device's Settings app (not the Amazon app), then find "Language and Region" or "Languages." If you change the system language here, the Amazon app might automatically switch its language to match. However, this affects all apps on your device, not just Amazon, so only choose this method if you want your entire phone operating in a different language.

Practical Takeaway: For Android users, the quickest method is opening the Amazon app, finding Settings through the menu, locating Language Preferences, and selecting your desired language. This change affects only the Amazon app and takes effect immediately. You can test the change by looking for familiar words like "Search" or "Account" to confirm they now appear in your chosen language.

Detailed Process for iPhone and iPad Users

iPhone and iPad users follow a similar but slightly different path to change their Amazon app language. Open the Amazon app and look for the menu icon. On Apple devices, this typically appears as three horizontal lines in the bottom right corner of the screen. In newer versions of the Amazon app, you might instead see a profile icon or account icon in the bottom right corner. Tap whichever icon is present on your version of the app. If you see the three-line menu icon, tap it directly. If you see a profile or account icon, tap that first, and a menu should appear.

Once you've opened the menu or account screen, look for the word "Settings" or a gear icon that represents settings. Tap this option to enter the app's preferences section. Within Settings, scroll down to find "Language" or "Language Preferences." On iOS devices, this option might also be labeled as "Display Preferences" or "Regional Settings," depending on your app version. When you find the language option, tap it to reveal the list of available languages for your region.

The list will display all languages supported by Amazon in your marketplace. For example, if you're using the Amazon.com app in the United States, you might see options like English (US), Español (Spanish), and Português (Portuguese). Tap the language you want to use. The app will refresh, and all content will immediately display in your chosen language. Text, menus, category names, and product information will all switch over. The change is permanent until you choose to switch languages again.

iPhone and iPad users should note that Amazon accounts created through the Amazon app or website maintain their language preference across all Apple devices linked to the same account. If you change the language on your iPhone and later log into your Amazon account on an iPad, the iPad app will show the same language setting. You can override this on individual devices if you want—each device can have its own language preference while using the same account. This flexibility makes it easy for family members sharing an iPad to each set their preferred language on their own iPhone.

Practical Takeaway: iPhone and iPad users should tap the menu or profile icon in the bottom right of the Amazon app, find Settings, and then select Language Preferences to choose from available options. Remember that your language choice might sync across your Apple devices if you're using the same Amazon account, but you can change each device individually if needed.

Understanding Available Languages and Regional Considerations

Amazon supports different sets of languages depending on which regional marketplace you're using. If you shop on Amazon.com (United States), you'll see a different language list than someone using Amazon.co.uk (United Kingdom) or Amazon.de (Germany). The US marketplace typically offers English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The UK marketplace might include English and potentially other European languages depending on your account settings. European marketplaces like Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, and Amazon.es have their own language options reflecting languages spoken in those regions.

The languages available also depend on your app version and whether you've updated recently. Amazon regularly updates its app with new features and language support, so if you don't see a language you expected, checking for app updates through your device's app store might reveal additional options. Open your device's app store, search for "Amazon," and see if an update is available. Installing the latest version may provide access to additional languages and features.

If you're traveling or have moved to a different country, your Amazon marketplace region might need updating before certain languages appear. For example, if you created your Amazon account in the US but are now in Mexico, you might need to update your account region or marketplace settings to see Spanish language options properly configured for your current location. This involves visiting Amazon's website and updating your account address and marketplace preferences, which is separate from changing the app language. The app language setting alone cannot change which Amazon marketplace you're connected to.

Keep in mind that product availability, pricing, and inventory may differ between regional Amazon marketplaces and languages. A product available in English on Amazon.com might not be available when you switch the same app to Spanish, especially if Amazon is directing you toward a different regional marketplace. Reading product reviews becomes particularly valuable when shopping in a language different from your device's primary language, as reviews often contain details about product quality, sizing, and shipping times written by actual customers.
