Learn How To Cook Sweet Potatoes Four Different Ways

Method 1: Baking Sweet Potatoes in the Oven

Baking is one of the most straightforward methods for cooking sweet potatoes and produces a tender, creamy interior with a slightly caramelized exterior. This method works well for medium to large sweet potatoes and requires minimal preparation.

To bake sweet potatoes, start by preheating your oven to 400°F (205°C). While the oven heats, rinse your sweet potatoes under cold running water and scrub them with a vegetable brush to remove any dirt. Pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel. Using a fork, pierce each sweet potato several times on all sides—this prevents steam from building up inside and potentially causing the potato to burst during cooking. You can choose to rub the skin lightly with a small amount of oil if you prefer a softer skin, though this step is optional.

Place the prepared sweet potatoes directly on the oven rack with a baking sheet positioned on the rack below to catch any drips. A medium-sized sweet potato (about 5-6 inches long) typically requires 45 to 50 minutes to cook through. Larger potatoes may need 50 to 60 minutes. You'll know they're done when a knife slides through the flesh easily with minimal resistance, or when the skin begins to crack slightly. The flesh should feel soft when gently squeezed (use an oven mitt or tongs for safety).

Once baked, remove the potatoes from the oven and let them rest for 5 minutes before handling. Cut them open lengthwise and fluff the flesh with a fork. At this point, you can add your preferred toppings such as cinnamon and brown sugar, butter, Greek yogurt, or savory options like black beans and cheese.

Practical Takeaway: Baked sweet potatoes store well in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, making them ideal for meal preparation. You can bake multiple potatoes at once, then reheat them throughout the week by microwaving for 2-3 minutes or warming in a 350°F oven for about 10 minutes.

Method 2: Microwaving Sweet Potatoes for Quick Cooking

Microwaving is the fastest cooking method for sweet potatoes, taking only 5 to 10 minutes depending on size and your microwave's power level. This approach works best for smaller to medium-sized potatoes and is particularly useful when you need a meal prepared quickly.

To microwave sweet potatoes, wash and dry them thoroughly as you would for baking. Poke several holes all over each potato using a fork—this is even more important for microwaving than oven baking, as steam needs a way to escape. Place one or two potatoes on a microwave-safe plate (avoid metal, which can cause sparking). For a single medium sweet potato, microwave on high power for 5-7 minutes. For larger potatoes or multiple potatoes, add 3-4 minutes per additional potato. Halfway through cooking, carefully turn the potatoes over to ensure even cooking.

After the initial cooking time, check for doneness by inserting a knife into the thickest part of the potato. The blade should slide through with minimal resistance. If the potato is still firm, continue microwaving in 1-minute intervals, checking after each minute. Once fully cooked, remove the potato using tongs or an oven mitt, as it will be very hot. Let it rest for 2-3 minutes before cutting open.

One important consideration with microwaved sweet potatoes is that the skin may not be as tender as baked versions, and the flesh may be slightly less creamy. However, the flavor remains excellent, and you can improve texture by fluffing the cooked flesh with a fork and adding a small pat of butter, which helps create a creamier consistency.

For batch cooking, you can microwave up to four medium potatoes at once by arranging them in a circle on a large microwave-safe plate. Increase the cooking time to 12-15 minutes and rotate them every 3-4 minutes.

Practical Takeaway: Microwaving is ideal for weeknight dinners when time is limited. Pair your microwaved sweet potato with quick toppings like cottage cheese and herbs, or canned beans and salsa to create a complete meal in under 20 minutes.

Method 3: Boiling Sweet Potatoes for Mashing and Soups

Boiling sweet potatoes is an excellent method when you plan to mash them, add them to soups, or incorporate them into other recipes where chunks or puree are needed. This method also produces very tender results and works well for larger quantities.

Begin by washing your sweet potatoes thoroughly under cold water. You have two options for boiling: you can peel the potatoes before or after cooking. Peeling before cooking is often easier because raw sweet potatoes are more rigid. Using a vegetable peeler or sharp knife, remove the thin outer skin in long strokes. Once peeled, cut the potatoes into uniform cubes (about 1.5 to 2 inches) or chunks. Uniform sizing ensures even cooking so all pieces are done at the same time.

Fill a large pot with enough water to cover the cut sweet potatoes by about 1 inch. Bring the water to a rolling boil over high heat, then carefully add the sweet potato pieces. Return the water to a boil and maintain a gentle to medium boil. Medium-sized chunks typically cook in 12 to 15 minutes. To check for doneness, remove a piece with a fork and test it—it should break apart easily when pressed gently between a fork and the side of the pot.

Once cooked, drain the potatoes in a colander and let them steam-dry for a minute or two. At this point, they're ready to use in any recipe. For mashed sweet potatoes, return the drained potatoes to the pot and use a potato masher to create your desired consistency. Add butter, a pinch of salt, and a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg if desired. For a smoother puree, use an immersion blender or food processor.

Boiled sweet potatoes can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or frozen for up to 3 months. This makes boiling an excellent choice for batch cooking.

Practical Takeaway: Boiled sweet potato puree can replace pumpkin puree in many recipes, including baked goods, smoothies, and breakfast dishes. A half-cup serving contains approximately 41 calories, 9 grams of carbohydrates, and about 2 grams of fiber, making it a nutritious addition to various meals.

Method 4: Roasting Sweet Potato Cubes for Crispy Edges and Caramelization

Roasting sweet potatoes at high heat creates crispy, caramelized edges while maintaining a tender interior. This method produces the most flavorful results and works particularly well for cubed or sliced potatoes that you plan to serve as a side dish, in salads, or as a snack.

Start by washing your sweet potatoes and peeling them with a vegetable peeler or sharp knife. Cut the peeled potatoes into uniform cubes approximately 0.75 to 1 inch in size. Uniform sizing is important for roasting because smaller pieces will cook faster than larger ones. If you prefer thinner, crispier pieces, you can cut the potatoes into 0.5-inch cubes or slice them into thin rounds.

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) or 450°F (232°C) for faster cooking. While the oven heats, place your sweet potato pieces in a large bowl. Drizzle with 1 to 2 tablespoons of olive oil per pound of potatoes (a medium sweet potato weighs about 5 ounces). Toss well until all pieces are lightly coated. Add your choice of seasonings at this stage. Popular options include smoked paprika, garlic powder, cumin, chili powder, or simply salt and black pepper. For a sweeter profile, toss with cinnamon and a small amount of brown sugar.
