Learn How to Pay Your Water Bill in Greensboro

Understanding Greensboro's Water Billing System

The City of Greensboro provides water and sewer services to residential and commercial customers throughout the city. The Water Resources Department manages billing for these essential services, which are billed together on a single monthly statement. Understanding how Greensboro calculates your water charges helps you know what to expect when your bill arrives and can help you identify any unusual usage patterns.

Water charges in Greensboro are based on metered consumption measured in units called CCF, which stands for 100 cubic feet. One CCF equals approximately 748 gallons of water. Your water meter, typically located at the front of your property or in your yard, tracks exactly how much water your household or business uses during each billing period. The city reads meters on a monthly cycle, and billing periods typically run from the 1st through the last day of each calendar month, though exact dates may vary by meter route.

Beyond the basic water consumption charge, your bill includes a sewer service charge based on water usage and a fixed monthly service charge that covers meter maintenance and infrastructure upkeep. If you live in an area that receives city stormwater management services, your bill may also include a stormwater fee. Understanding these different components helps explain why your total bill includes charges beyond just the water you use.

The City of Greensboro publishes its water rates on its official website, and these rates are established through a public rate-setting process. Rates typically increase annually to cover rising operational costs, infrastructure maintenance, and system improvements. Checking the current rates before expecting your bill helps you understand what charges to anticipate.

Practical Takeaway: Review your water bill carefully when it arrives. Your bill shows your current meter reading, your previous meter reading, and the number of units you used that billing period. This information helps you track whether your usage patterns are consistent month to month and can alert you to potential leaks if usage suddenly spikes without explanation.

Payment Methods Available to Greensboro Water Customers

The City of Greensboro offers several convenient payment methods for water and sewer bills, allowing customers to choose the option that works best for their situation. Each payment method has different processing times and features, so reviewing your options helps you select the most suitable approach for your needs.

Online payment through the city's website represents one of the most popular payment methods. Customers can pay their bills through the Greensboro water billing portal, which requires your account number and other identifying information. The online system typically processes payments immediately, though funds may take one to two business days to post to your account depending on your bank. Online payment is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, making it accessible whenever it's convenient for you to pay. The city does not charge an additional processing fee for online payments made through their official portal.

Customers can also pay by phone by calling the Water Resources Department during business hours. A customer service representative can process your payment over the phone using a debit card or credit card. Phone payments typically process the same day if made during business hours. The city's phone line is staffed during standard municipal business hours, usually 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Mail payment remains an option for customers who prefer traditional methods. You can send a check or money order to the address listed on your water bill. When paying by mail, allow approximately one to two weeks for your payment to reach the city office, be processed, and post to your account. For this reason, mailing payments requires planning ahead to ensure your payment arrives before the due date and avoids late fees.

In-person payments can be made at the city's Water Resources Department office during regular business hours. Customers can pay with cash, check, money order, debit card, or credit card. In-person payments are processed immediately and provide a receipt confirming your payment on the spot.

Some customers set up automatic recurring payments, known as automatic bank drafts or ACH payments, through the online billing portal. This option withdraws your bill amount directly from your checking account on a date you specify. Automatic payments eliminate the need to remember to pay each month and reduce the risk of late payments.

Practical Takeaway: Choose a payment method that matches your preferences and payment schedule. If you tend to forget bills, setting up automatic payments prevents late fees. If you prefer to review each bill before paying, online or phone payment offers flexibility with same-day or next-day processing without extra fees.

Locating Your Account Information and Bill Details

Finding your water account number and other key information on your bill is the first step in making a payment. Your water bill contains everything the payment system needs to process your payment correctly and connect it to your account. Learning how to read your bill also helps you spot errors and understand what you're being charged for.

Your account number appears prominently on the front of your water bill, usually in the upper right or left corner. This is the number you'll need when paying online, by phone, or in person. The account number links your payment to your specific property and ensures the payment reaches the correct account. If you've misplaced your physical bill, you can look up your account number online through the city's website or by calling the Water Resources Department.

Your bill also displays your service address, which is the property address where water service is provided. This is important information to verify, as bills occasionally go to incorrect addresses if there have been recent changes or address updates in the system. If your bill is arriving at the wrong address, contact the Water Resources Department to update your service address.

The billing date and due date appear clearly on your statement. The billing date indicates when your billing period ended and your bill was generated. The due date is typically 15 to 20 days from the billing date and indicates when payment should be received to avoid late charges. Reading the due date carefully helps you plan your payment timing, particularly if you're paying by mail.

The amount due section shows your total bill broken down by service type. You can see your water consumption charge, sewer charge, stormwater fee if applicable, and any other charges separately. This breakdown helps you understand what makes up your total payment amount. If you notice an unusually high water charge, you can review your consumption figure and investigate whether a leak might be occurring.

Many bills also include contact information for customer service and information about available payment methods. Keeping this information handy helps you reach the Water Resources Department if you have questions about your bill or need to discuss your account.

Practical Takeaway: Keep a copy of your most recent bill in an easily accessible place. Your account number, service address, and payment method options are all on your bill. Having this information ready when you're prepared to pay speeds up the payment process, whether you're paying online or by phone.

Setting Up an Online Account and Portal Access

The online portal provides a secure way to view your bills, check your payment history, and manage your account details.

To create an online account, visit the City of Greensboro's official website and locate the water billing or customer service section. The portal typically requires you to provide basic information including your account number, your service address, and a personal email address. You'll create a username and password, which you should store in a secure location for future login access. The registration process usually takes just a few minutes.

Once your account is set up, you can log in to view your current bill and all previous bills, usually going back 12 to 24 months depending on the system. This historical information is useful for tracking your water usage patterns over time and identifying whether your consumption has increased. If you're concerned about a potential leak, comparing bills across several months can show you whether usage has suddenly jumped.

The online portal allows you to set up a one-time payment or to enroll in automatic recurring payments. For one-time payments, you enter your payment amount and preferred payment date, and the system processes the payment according to your instructions. For automatic payments, you set a date each month when your bill amount should be withdrawn from your bank account. The system typically offers flexibility in choosing which date works best for your budget.

The online portal also displays your most recent meter reading and the meter reading from the previous billing period, allowing you to calculate your consumption and verify that the meter reading is accurate. If you notice a significant discrepancy, this is something you can discuss with customer service representatives who can investigate further.
