Learn How to Reset Your Hyundai's Tire Pressure System
Understanding Your Hyundai's Tire Pressure Monitoring System
The Tire Pressure Monitoring System, commonly called TPMS, is a safety feature found in nearly all Hyundai vehicles manufactured after 2007. This system uses sensors mounted on each wheel to continuously track the air pressure inside your tires and alert you when pressure drops below or rises above recommended levels. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, proper tire pressure can improve fuel efficiency by up to 3% and extend tire life significantly.

Your Hyundai's TPMS works by monitoring four sensors—one on each wheel—that transmit pressure data to your vehicle's onboard computer. When tire pressure deviates from the manufacturer's specifications, the system triggers a warning light on your dashboard, typically showing a tire symbol with an exclamation point. This warning serves as an early indicator that something requires attention before it becomes a safety concern.
The recommended tire pressure for your specific Hyundai model is not the pressure printed on the tire itself. Instead, look for the correct pressure specifications on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb. Most Hyundai models specify pressures between 30 and 36 PSI, though this varies by model year and trim level. Checking this information regularly helps you understand what your TPMS should be monitoring.
Understanding how your TPMS functions is important because the system occasionally requires resetting. Resetting becomes necessary after you inflate or deflate tires, rotate them, or replace one or more tires. The reset process tells your vehicle's computer to recalibrate and recognize the current tire pressures as the new baseline for normal operation.
Practical Takeaway: Before attempting any reset procedure, locate your vehicle's tire pressure specification on the driver's side door jamb and write it down. This reference point is essential for verifying that your tires are properly inflated before resetting the TPMS.
Locating the TPMS Reset Button in Your Hyundai
The TPMS reset button location varies depending on your Hyundai's model year and trim level. In most modern Hyundai vehicles manufactured from 2015 onward, the reset button is located beneath the steering wheel on the dashboard. You'll typically find it near the bottom of the instrument panel, sometimes positioned to the left of the steering column. Some models place it on the left side of the steering wheel or within the dashboard storage compartment.

To locate your specific reset button, consult your owner's manual, which contains detailed diagrams showing the exact location for your model. If you don't have a physical manual, Hyundai provides digital manuals through their official website. You can search for your vehicle's year, make, and model to access the PDF version. The manual also includes information specific to your vehicle's TPMS variant, as Hyundai has used different system manufacturers across their product line.
Some Hyundai models use an alternative reset method through the vehicle's infotainment screen rather than a physical button. Vehicles with touchscreen displays may require you to navigate through the settings menu to find the tire pressure monitoring option. The procedure involves accessing the vehicle settings, selecting tire pressure monitoring, and choosing the reset option from the menu. This method is common in newer Hyundai models with advanced technology packages.
Identifying your specific system type is crucial because using the wrong reset procedure can fail to properly recalibrate your TPMS. Take time to examine your dashboard carefully, looking for any small buttons or switches that might not be immediately obvious. If you're having difficulty locating the reset button, check behind the steering wheel column covers or in any hidden compartments near the dashboard area.
Practical Takeaway: Photograph the area around your steering column and any dashboard areas where controls are located. Compare these photos with your owner's manual to confidently identify your reset button before attempting the procedure.
Preparing Your Tires for TPMS Reset
Before resetting your Hyundai's TPMS, all four tires must be inflated to the correct pressure specified by your vehicle's manufacturer. This preparation step is essential because the reset process recalibrates the system based on current tire pressures. If tires are underinflated or overinflated during reset, the system will establish incorrect baseline pressures, potentially causing warning lights to activate incorrectly.

To prepare your tires properly, you'll need a tire pressure gauge and an air compressor. Digital tire pressure gauges provide more accurate readings than analog gauges and typically cost between $15 and $40. Many gas stations and automotive retailers provide free or low-cost air compressor access. Some Hyundai dealerships offer complimentary tire pressure checking as part of their customer service.
Begin by checking the pressure in all four tires when they are cold—meaning the vehicle has been parked for at least three hours or hasn't been driven more than a mile at moderate speed. Tire pressure increases when tires are warm from driving, which can give you inaccurate readings. Take your pressure readings in the morning or several hours after the vehicle has been parked to get the most accurate measurements.
Use your tire pressure gauge to record the current pressure in each tire, then compare these readings to the manufacturer's specifications from your door jamb sticker. If any tire is below specification, add air using the compressor. If any tire is above specification, carefully release air by pressing the valve stem or using the deflation mechanism on some gauges. Most compressors include a pressure gauge and inflation nozzle, making the process straightforward.
A practical note: when inflating tires, add air in short intervals and recheck pressure frequently. It's easier to add air than to remove it, so work carefully to avoid overfilling. Once all four tires match the manufacturer's specifications exactly, you're ready to proceed with the reset procedure.
Practical Takeaway: Create a simple chart noting your vehicle's specified tire pressure, then write down the current pressure reading from each tire. Keep this chart with you during the preparation process to track when all tires reach the correct pressure.
Step-by-Step TPMS Reset Procedure
The standard TPMS reset procedure for most Hyundai models involves a series of actions performed with the engine off or in the accessory position. First, turn your ignition to the "On" position without starting the engine. Your dashboard lights will activate, but the engine remains off. This position allows your vehicle's electrical systems to function while keeping the engine shut down.

Next, locate and press the TPMS reset button. Hold the button for approximately three seconds until you see the tire pressure warning light on your dashboard blink or flash. This blinking indicates that the system has entered reset mode. Release the button and wait for the light to stop blinking, which typically takes between 30 seconds to one minute. The light will either disappear completely or remain steady, depending on your specific vehicle model.
Some Hyundai models require you to start the engine after pressing the reset button. If your dashboard light doesn't respond after pressing the button with the engine off, try starting the engine and repeating the process. Run the engine for a few minutes to allow the TPMS sensors to communicate with the vehicle's computer and establish new baseline readings.
After completing the reset, turn off the engine and wait a few minutes. Then start your vehicle normally and observe your dashboard. The tire pressure warning light should no longer be illuminated if the reset was successful. Drive the vehicle for 20 to 30 minutes at varying speeds—a mix of city and highway driving works well—to allow the TPMS sensors to fully recalibrate and synchronize with your vehicle's computer system.
If the tire pressure warning light remains on or reappears after the reset, this indicates either that your tires need further pressure adjustment or that the TPMS sensors may require replacement. Return to your tire pressure measurements and verify that all four tires are still at the correct pressure, then attempt the reset procedure a second time.
Practical Takeaway: Write down each step of the reset procedure before beginning, noting the specific actions for your Hyundai model. Having a written checklist prevents missing steps and increases the likelihood of a successful reset on the first attempt.
