Learn How to Restart Your PlayStation 4

Understanding the PlayStation 4 Restart Function

Restarting your PlayStation 4 is a basic maintenance task that can resolve many common performance issues. Unlike simply turning the console off and on, a proper restart clears the system's memory, closes all running processes, and refreshes the operating system. This process takes approximately 30 seconds to complete, depending on your console model and what data needs to be cleared.

The PlayStation 4 has been on the market since November 2013, and over 117 million units have been sold worldwide as of 2023. Throughout its lifecycle, Sony has released system software updates that include various restart protocols and options. Understanding how to restart your PS4 properly can extend the lifespan of your console and improve gaming performance.

There are several reasons you might need to restart your PS4. Games may freeze during play, the system may respond slowly when navigating menus, or you might encounter error codes that prevent you from using certain features. Connection issues with your internet, problems with downloaded content, or unexpected crashes can all benefit from a proper restart. Some users report that restarting their console resolves issues with game updates that fail to install or multiplayer connectivity problems.

Your PS4 contains both an internal hard drive or solid-state drive (depending on your model) and volatile memory (RAM) that stores temporary information while the system operates. When you restart, the temporary memory gets cleared, but your saved games, user profiles, and installed games remain intact on the storage drive. This distinction is important because it means restarting is safe and won't cause you to lose your progress or data.

Practical Takeaway: Restart your PS4 at least once monthly as preventive maintenance, or whenever you notice performance issues, freezing, or connection problems. A restart is always a safe troubleshooting step that won't affect your saved games or installed content.

How to Perform a Standard Restart

The most straightforward way to restart your PlayStation 4 involves using the Power options in the Settings menu. This method is preferred because it properly shuts down all system processes before powering back on. To begin, press the PS button on your controller to open the function area. The PS button is located in the center of your DualShock 4 controller and displays the PlayStation logo.

Once you've pressed the PS button, look at the bottom of the screen where several options appear. You'll see icons for power, sound, and other functions. Select the power icon, which typically appears as a rectangle with a line through the top. This opens a submenu with power-related options. You should see three choices: enter rest mode, enter safe mode, or turn off PS4. For a standard restart, select "Turn Off PS4."

After selecting "Turn Off PS4," the system will display a message confirming your choice. The console will then shut down completely. This process usually takes 5-10 seconds. You'll notice the power light on the front of your console will turn off. Some users see a brief white light before the system powers down completely. Wait at least 30 seconds after the console has turned off before proceeding to the next step.

Once you've waited the recommended 30 seconds, press the power button on the front of your PlayStation 4 console to turn it back on. The power button is a small, flat button located on the lower left side of the PS4 unit. When you press it, the console will boot up, and you'll see the PlayStation logo appear on your screen. The startup process typically takes 30-60 seconds, during which the system loads your profile and checks for any system updates that need to be applied.

Practical Takeaway: Use the Settings menu power option for routine restarts. Always wait at least 30 seconds between powering off and powering back on to allow capacitors in the system to fully discharge.

Performing a Hard Reset When Your Console Is Unresponsive

Sometimes your PS4 may become unresponsive or frozen, making it impossible to access the Settings menu through normal methods. In these situations, you'll need to perform a hard reset, which forces the console to shut down immediately. Unlike a standard restart, a hard reset doesn't allow the system to save any temporary data or properly close applications, but it's often necessary when the console has completely stopped responding to controller input.

To perform a hard reset, locate the power button on the front of your PlayStation 4 console. Press and hold this button continuously for approximately 7-10 seconds. You may hear a beep sound after about 7 seconds—this indicates the system is beginning to shut down. Continue holding the button until the power light goes off completely and remains off. Do not release the button early, as this may only put the system into rest mode instead of forcing a complete shutdown.

After the console has powered down, wait a full minute before attempting to restart it. This extended wait period is particularly important with a hard reset because it allows more time for electrical charges to dissipate from the system's capacitors. Some technical experts recommend waiting up to two minutes for optimal results. During this waiting period, you can unplug the power cable if you wish, though this step isn't required for a hard reset since the system is already powered off.

Press the power button once to restart your console. The system will boot up as normal, though it may take slightly longer than a standard restart because it's performing some internal checks. Your PS4 may also display messages about an unexpected shutdown when it restarts—this is normal behavior and simply indicates that the system shut down without going through its standard shutdown sequence. These messages don't indicate damage to your console and can be dismissed by pressing a button on your controller.

Practical Takeaway: Use hard reset only when your console is completely unresponsive. Hold the power button for 7-10 seconds until the system powers off, then wait one to two minutes before restarting. Hard reset is safe and won't damage your console or data.

Understanding Rest Mode Versus Full Restart

PlayStation 4 offers a feature called Rest Mode that many users confuse with a full restart. While both involve reducing power consumption, they work very differently. Rest Mode is designed to put your console into a low-power state while maintaining some functionality. When in Rest Mode, your PS4 uses approximately 0.9 watts of power compared to 100+ watts during active use. This makes Rest Mode useful for reducing electricity costs and heat generation.

In Rest Mode, your console remains connected to the internet and can perform background tasks like downloading game updates, charging your controller, or uploading saved game data to PlayStation Plus cloud storage. When you press the PS button on your controller, the console wakes up almost immediately—usually within 5-10 seconds. However, Rest Mode doesn't clear the system's RAM or refresh the operating system the way a full restart does. It's more of a power-saving feature than a maintenance function.

A full restart, by contrast, completely powers down the console and clears all temporary data from RAM. When you power the system back on, it goes through the complete boot sequence, reloading the operating system fresh. This process takes longer—typically 30-60 seconds—but provides more thorough clearing of any lingering issues or corrupted temporary files.

For troubleshooting performance issues, a full restart is generally more effective than Rest Mode. However, if your PS4 is working normally and you simply want to reduce power consumption overnight, Rest Mode serves that purpose well. Some users employ both strategies: using Rest Mode daily for convenience and power savings, and performing a full restart weekly or when they notice performance degradation. If you're experiencing freezing, lag, or connection problems, a full restart should be your first troubleshooting step rather than relying on Rest Mode.

Practical Takeaway: Rest Mode saves power and maintains internet connectivity but doesn't refresh your system. Use full restart for troubleshooting performance issues, and use Rest Mode for regular daily power management when your console is functioning normally.

Safe Mode Restart for System-Level Repairs

PlayStation 4 includes a Safe Mode that allows you to perform system-level maintenance and repairs that you can't do from the standard operating system. Safe Mode starts your console with only essential system functions running, which can help resolve deeper issues that a standard restart won't fix. To access Safe Mode, you need to start with your console powered completely off.
