Learn How to Send a Wire Transfer to Bank of America

Understanding Wire Transfers and How They Work

A wire transfer is a method of sending money electronically from one bank account to another. Unlike checks or ACH transfers, which can take several business days, wire transfers move funds much faster—often within hours or even the same day. Bank of America offers wire transfer services to customers who want to send money domestically (within the United States) or internationally (to other countries).

When you send a wire transfer, you're instructing your bank to move money directly from your account to the recipient's account at their bank. The process involves several key pieces of information: the recipient's name, their bank account number, their bank's routing number, and the amount you want to send. For international wire transfers, you'll also need additional information such as the SWIFT code or IBAN (International Bank Account Number).

Wire transfers are generally considered secure because the funds go directly from bank to bank rather than through the mail or third-party services. However, once a wire transfer is sent, it cannot be reversed in most cases. This means you should verify all recipient information carefully before sending. Bank of America typically charges fees for wire transfers—domestic wires usually cost between $15 to $30, while international wires may cost $35 to $50 or more, depending on the destination country and whether the recipient's bank charges an additional fee.

Understanding the basics of wire transfers helps you make informed decisions about whether this payment method suits your needs. Wire transfers work well for large payments, time-sensitive transactions, or when you need to send money to someone who doesn't have a checking account that accepts ACH transfers. Many businesses use wire transfers for vendor payments, real estate transactions, and large purchases.

Practical takeaway: Wire transfers move money quickly but cannot be reversed, so confirm all recipient details before proceeding. Check Bank of America's current fee schedule on their website, as fees may change.

Gathering the Information You'll Need

Before you can send a wire transfer through Bank of America, you need to collect specific information about the recipient. Having all details ready beforehand makes the process faster and reduces the chance of errors. Start by contacting the person or business receiving the money and asking for their banking information in writing.

For domestic wire transfers within the United States, you'll need:

• Recipient's full name (exactly as it appears on their bank account)
• Recipient's bank account number
• Recipient's bank's routing number (a nine-digit code that identifies the bank)
• Recipient's bank name and city
• The amount of money you want to send

For international wire transfers, the information becomes more detailed:

• Recipient's full name and address
• Recipient's bank account number or IBAN (International Bank Account Number)
• Recipient's bank's SWIFT code (an eight to eleven-character code used for international transactions)
• Recipient's bank name, address, and country
• Your reason for the transfer (Bank of America may ask this for compliance purposes)
• The amount and currency you're sending

You can find routing numbers by asking the recipient's bank directly, visiting the American Bankers Association website, or checking your own Bank of America statements if you've received transfers from that bank before. SWIFT codes are available through the recipient's bank, or you can search online databases maintained by financial institutions. Getting incorrect information is one of the most common reasons wire transfers fail or end up in the wrong account, so take time to verify every detail.

Practical takeaway: Request banking information in writing from the recipient and double-check every number. A single digit typed incorrectly could send your money to the wrong account.

Sending a Domestic Wire Transfer Through Bank of America

Bank of America offers multiple ways to send domestic wire transfers. The most common methods are through their online banking platform, their mobile app, or by visiting a branch in person. Each method follows similar steps but offers different levels of convenience.

To send a wire transfer using Bank of America's online banking portal, log into your account on their website. Look for options labeled "Transfer Money," "Wire Transfer," or "Send Money." Select "Wire Transfer" and choose whether you're sending money domestically or internationally. If you've sent a wire to this recipient before, their information may already be saved in your contacts, making the process faster. If this is a new recipient, you'll enter their name, account number, routing number, bank name, and the amount you want to send.

Bank of America's mobile app works similarly. Open the app, navigate to the transfer or payments section, and select wire transfer. You can use your phone's camera to scan banking documents or routing number information if the app offers this feature. This can reduce typing errors. After entering all information, review the details carefully. Bank of America will show you the fee amount before you confirm the transfer. Once you approve the transfer, the money typically leaves your account within hours.

If you prefer to send a wire transfer in person, visit your local Bank of America branch with identification and the recipient's banking information. A banker can walk you through the process and answer questions. This method works well if you're uncomfortable with online banking or want to discuss transfer options with a representative. The in-person method may take slightly longer since you need to travel to the branch, but the steps remain the same.

After you send a domestic wire transfer, Bank of America provides a confirmation number. Save this number in case you need to track the transfer or contact the bank later. The recipient's bank typically receives domestic wires the same business day or the next business day. You can follow up with the recipient to confirm they've received the funds.

Practical takeaway: Use online banking or the mobile app for convenience, or visit a branch if you prefer face-to-face assistance. Always save your confirmation number and verify the recipient received the funds.

Sending an International Wire Transfer From Bank of America

International wire transfers require additional steps and information compared to domestic transfers. The process is similar in structure but involves more details because the money must pass through international banking systems and comply with regulations in multiple countries. Bank of America can send money to most countries worldwide, though some nations have restrictions.

To initiate an international wire transfer, start by gathering the complete recipient information including their SWIFT code and IBAN if available. The SWIFT code identifies the specific bank internationally, similar to how a routing number works domestically. An IBAN is a standardized format for bank account numbers used throughout Europe and many other regions. Some countries use IBANs, others use different formats, so confirm what your recipient's bank requires.

Log into Bank of America's online banking platform and select "Wire Transfer" and then "International." You'll enter the recipient's information, including their name, address, bank account details, and SWIFT code. Bank of America will ask about the purpose of the transfer. This information is required by U.S. federal regulations for compliance and anti-money-laundering purposes. Common purposes include "payment for services," "family support," "payment for goods," or "loan repayment." Be honest and specific about why you're sending the money.

One important consideration with international wires is exchange rates. If you're sending money to a country with a different currency, Bank of America will convert your U.S. dollars to the recipient's local currency. They'll show you the current exchange rate and the amount the recipient will receive in their local currency before you confirm the transfer. Exchange rates change constantly, so the rate shown may differ slightly from the final rate when the transfer processes. Bank of America also charges international wire fees, typically ranging from $35 to $50 or more depending on the destination country.

International wire transfers typically take 1 to 5 business days, though some countries may take longer. You'll receive a confirmation number. Keep this number and provide it to the recipient if they need to trace the transfer on their end. Some international banks may apply additional fees when they receive the wire transfer, reducing the amount the recipient receives. You can ask Bank of America whether additional fees from the receiving bank are expected.

Practical takeaway: International wires involve exchange rates, longer processing times, and higher fees. Confirm the recipient's country-specific banking requirements and clarify the transfer purpose before sending.
