Learn How to Switch Device Display Modes
Understanding Display Modes and Their Purpose
Display modes refer to the different visual settings and configurations that your device uses to show information on its screen. Every electronic device with a display—whether it's a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer—has built-in display modes that change how the screen looks and operates. These modes affect brightness, color settings, refresh rates, resolution, and other visual characteristics.

The main reason devices offer multiple display modes is to adapt to different situations and user preferences. For example, you might want a bright, colorful display when watching videos indoors, but a different mode when working outdoors in sunlight. You might also want to reduce blue light in the evening to help with sleep, or switch to a high-performance mode when gaming or editing videos.
Display modes also serve practical purposes beyond personal preference. Some modes use less battery power, which extends how long your device runs between charges. Other modes make text easier to read for people with vision challenges. Understanding what display modes your device has available helps you use your device more effectively in different environments and situations.
Most modern devices come with several standard display modes pre-installed. Common examples include Standard mode, which provides balanced color and brightness; Dark mode, which uses darker colors to reduce eye strain; Reading mode, which adjusts colors for better text visibility; and Power Saving mode, which reduces battery consumption. The specific modes available vary depending on your device type and operating system.
Practical Takeaway: Spend time exploring your device's display settings menu to discover what modes are currently available. You may find several options you didn't know existed that could improve your experience in specific situations.
How to Access Display Settings on Different Devices
Finding your device's display settings is usually straightforward, though the exact steps differ depending on whether you're using a smartphone, tablet, computer, or other device. On most smartphones and tablets running modern operating systems, you can access display settings through the main Settings app. Look for an icon that looks like a gear or wrench, usually found on your home screen or in your app drawer.

For iPhone users, open the Settings app and look for "Display & Brightness" near the top of the menu. This section shows your current brightness level and contains options for text size, display zoom, and Dark mode. For Android devices, the path varies slightly depending on the manufacturer. Generally, you'll open Settings, then look for "Display" or "Screen" options. Samsung devices typically label this as "Display," while other manufacturers might use similar names.
On Windows computers, right-click on your desktop background and select "Display settings" from the menu, or go to Settings > System > Display. Mac users should click the Apple menu, select System Preferences or System Settings, then choose Displays. These areas contain controls for brightness, resolution, refresh rate, and other display-related options.
Some devices also offer quick access to certain display settings through a control panel or notification center. On iPhones and iPads, swipe down from the top-right corner to access Control Center, where you can quickly adjust brightness and enable Dark mode. Android devices typically have a similar quick settings panel that you can access by swiping down from the top of the screen. These quick-access options let you change display modes without opening the full Settings app.
Practical Takeaway: Write down or take a screenshot of the path to your device's display settings so you can find them quickly next time. Knowing the exact route saves time when you want to switch modes on the go.
Common Display Modes and When to Use Them
Dark mode has become one of the most popular display modes available on modern devices. This mode uses dark backgrounds with light text instead of the traditional light backgrounds with dark text. Many people prefer dark mode because it reduces eye strain, especially in low-light environments like bedrooms at night. Dark mode also consumes less battery power on devices with OLED screens, which only light up the pixels that display content. If a pixel is black in dark mode, it doesn't use power.

Light mode, sometimes called Standard mode or Normal mode, is the traditional display setting with bright backgrounds and dark text. This mode works best in brightly lit environments like outdoors or in offices with strong lighting. Text and images often appear sharper and more detailed in light mode compared to dark mode. Many people find light mode easier to read for extended periods during the day, though preferences vary individually.
Reading mode adjusts colors and contrast specifically to reduce eye strain during reading activities. This mode typically shifts the color temperature toward warmer tones and increases contrast between text and background. Some devices call this "Eye Comfort mode" or "Reader mode." If you spend hours reading books, articles, or documents on your device, switching to reading mode can reduce fatigue in your eyes and neck.
Power Saving mode or Battery Saver mode reduces performance and visual features to extend battery life. This mode typically lowers screen brightness, reduces refresh rates, limits background app activity, and sometimes reduces processing speed. When your device's battery is running low and you won't be near a charger soon, switching to power saving mode can keep your device running for several additional hours. High Contrast mode increases the difference between text and background colors, making content easier to see for people with low vision or color blindness. Performance mode or Gaming mode prioritizes fast refresh rates and processing power for smooth motion in videos and games, though this uses more battery.
Practical Takeaway: Try using dark mode for one week and light mode for the next week, then notice which one feels more comfortable for your eyes. Different people have different preferences, and your preferred mode may also change based on time of day or lighting conditions.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Switching Display Modes
Switching display modes on an iPhone or iPad is one of the simplest processes available. First, open the Settings app by tapping the gray gear icon. Scroll down and tap "Display & Brightness." You'll see options for Light and Dark at the top of this screen. Tap Dark to enable dark mode, or tap Light to return to light mode. If you want your device to automatically switch between light mode during the day and dark mode at night, select "Automatic" instead. Your device will then use your location and the time of sunset to determine when to make the change.

For Android devices, the process is similar but varies slightly by manufacturer. Open the Settings app and look for "Display" or "Screen." Once you find this section, look for "Dark mode" or "Dark theme." Toggle this switch on to enable dark mode, or toggle it off to return to light mode. Some Android devices also offer an "Adaptive color" or "Material You" option that adjusts colors based on your wallpaper. If your device has a "Schedule" or "Automatic" option for dark mode, you can set it to change at specific times of day.
On Windows computers, right-click your desktop and select "Personalization," or go to Settings > Personalization > Colors. Look for the section labeled "Choose your color" or "Choose your mode." Click the toggle next to "Dark" to enable dark mode. Windows also allows you to set different color modes for apps and windows separately. You can use light mode for some applications and dark mode for others if you prefer.
Mac users should click the Apple menu at the top-left corner and select "System Settings" or "System Preferences." Click "Appearance," then select either Light or Dark. You can also choose "Auto" to have your Mac switch between light and dark mode based on the time of day. If you want to access other display settings like brightness, resolution, or refresh rate, stay in System Settings and click "Displays."
To access other display modes like reading mode or power saving mode, return to your device's main display settings menu. Look for specific options labeled with the mode name you want to use. Some modes may have additional settings you can customize, such as adjusting how warm or cool the color temperature appears.
Practical Takeaway: Write down the steps for your specific device and bookmark this guide. Keep the instructions somewhere you can find them if you forget the exact process.
Advanced Display Settings and Customization Options
Beyond basic display mode switching, most devices offer additional customization options that let you fine-tune how your screen looks. Brightness is the most common adjustment, and you can usually set it manually or enable automatic brightness, which uses your device's light sensor to adjust brightness based on your environment. Automatic brightness is particularly useful because it adapts to changing lighting conditions throughout the day without requiring you to make manual adjustments.
