Learn What This Site Can't Be Reached Means

What Does "This Site Can't Be Reached" Mean?

When you try to visit a website and see the message "This Site Can't Be Reached," it means your web browser cannot connect to that website's server. This is one of the most common error messages people encounter online. The message appears in different forms depending on your browser — Chrome shows "This Site Can't Be Reached," Firefox displays "Unable to Connect," Safari says "Safari Can't Connect to the Server," and Edge shows "Hmmm, can't reach this page." Despite the different wording, they all mean the same thing: your device and the website's computer aren't communicating.

This error doesn't necessarily mean the website is permanently gone or broken. It could be a temporary problem that lasts seconds, minutes, or hours. Understanding what causes this error helps you troubleshoot the problem and determine whether you should try again later or take action to fix it on your end. Statistics show that about 21% of web traffic experiences some form of connection error each month, making this one of the most frequent technical issues internet users face.

The error message typically includes additional information, such as "ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED," "ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED," or "ERR_NETWORK_UNREACHABLE." These codes provide clues about what went wrong. Learning to read and understand these codes helps you solve the problem faster without unnecessary frustration.

Practical Takeaway: When you see "This Site Can't Be Reached," take a moment to note the exact error code shown. This information will help you determine whether the problem is with your connection, the website, or something in between.

Common Causes on the Website's End

Sometimes "This Site Can't Be Reached" appears because something is wrong with the website itself, not your connection. The website's server — the powerful computer that stores the website's files and sends them to visitors — might be down for maintenance, experiencing technical problems, or overwhelmed with too much traffic. Major websites perform routine maintenance regularly. For example, many companies schedule server updates during early morning hours when fewer people are visiting. During these maintenance windows, visitors see connection errors.

Server crashes happen when a website receives more visitors than it can handle at one time. When a popular website releases a major announcement or product, traffic can spike dramatically. In January 2023, the ChatGPT website experienced widespread outages because over 1 million new users signed up in the first five days, overwhelming the servers. Websites may also go offline if they experience a cyber attack, hardware failure, or power outage at their data center.

Domain name problems also cause this error. Every website has a domain name (like "example.com") that points to a server's address. If a website owner fails to renew their domain registration or has technical issues with their domain settings, browsers cannot find the website even if the server is working fine. Domain registrations typically last one or two years and must be renewed before expiration.

Website migration — when a company moves their site to a new server or hosting company — sometimes causes temporary "This Site Can't Be Reached" errors. During the transition period, some visitors might connect to old server information while the website is updating.

Practical Takeaway: Check a website status monitoring service like "DownDetector" or "Is It Down Right Now?" by searching for the website name. These sites show whether other people are experiencing the same connection problem, indicating the issue is with the website rather than your device.

Problems on Your Connection or Device

Many "This Site Can't Be Reached" errors happen because of problems with your internet connection or device, not the website. When your device cannot establish any internet connection, no websites will load. This might happen because your WiFi disconnected, your modem is offline, your internet service provider (ISP) is experiencing an outage, or you've exceeded your data limit on a mobile device.

Your device's DNS settings can also cause this error. DNS (Domain Name System) works like a phone book for the internet — it translates website names into numerical addresses that computers understand. When DNS isn't working properly, your browser cannot find websites even though the website exists and your internet connection is active. DNS problems might result from your internet provider's DNS servers being down, your router needing a restart, or incorrect DNS settings on your device.

Browser cache and cookies sometimes cause connection issues. Your browser stores temporary files and information about websites you visit. If this stored data becomes corrupted, it can prevent your browser from connecting to certain websites. Clearing your browser cache and cookies often solves this problem. In Chrome, you access this through Settings > Privacy and Security > Clear Browsing Data. In Firefox, use History > Clear Recent History.

Firewall or antivirus software on your computer might block certain websites. While these programs protect your device, they sometimes incorrectly flag legitimate websites as dangerous. Similarly, parental control software or network-level filters might block websites in certain categories, displaying "This Site Can't Be Reached" as the reason.

Practical Takeaway: First, test your internet connection by trying to visit a different website. If other websites load fine, the problem is specific to that one website. If no websites load, restart your router (unplug it for 30 seconds, then plug it back in) and try again.

Network and ISP Issues

Your internet service provider (ISP) plays a crucial role in connecting you to websites. When your ISP experiences problems, you may see "This Site Can't Be Reached" for multiple websites. According to reports, the average American experiences approximately 4.5 hours of broadband outages per year, though this varies by region and provider.

ISP outages happen for various reasons. Severe weather like storms, heavy snow, or flooding can damage cables and equipment. Construction work, vehicle accidents, or other incidents can physically cut internet cables in your area. ISPs also perform scheduled maintenance that causes temporary outages. Many providers publish maintenance schedules on their websites where you can check planned downtime.

Network congestion occurs when too many people in your area use the internet simultaneously, reducing speeds for everyone. This commonly happens during evening hours (6 PM to 10 PM) when most people are home from work and school. In areas with older infrastructure, congestion might prevent websites from loading at all, showing "This Site Can't Be Reached."

BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) hijacking and routing errors, while less common, can prevent traffic from reaching certain websites. BGP is the system that directs internet traffic across the globe. When BGP routes are misconfigured or attacked, traffic intended for a website might be sent to the wrong location or blocked entirely. These incidents are rare but can affect many users simultaneously.

Your modem or router might also be the culprit. These devices create the bridge between your ISP's network and your personal devices. If your modem loses connection to your ISP, or if your router malfunctions, you'll see connection errors for many or all websites.

Practical Takeaway: Check your ISP's website or social media accounts for outage notifications. You can also contact your ISP directly or check their customer service phone line to learn whether they're experiencing known issues in your area.

Steps to Troubleshoot "This Site Can't Be Reached"

When you encounter this error, follow these troubleshooting steps in order. Most problems resolve within the first few attempts. Start by checking whether your internet connection is working. Look at your WiFi indicator — if you're not connected, reconnect to your network. On a wired connection, check that the ethernet cable is firmly plugged in at both ends.

Next, try visiting a different website. Go to a major site like Google, Yahoo, or a news website. If these load successfully, the problem is specific to the website you originally wanted to visit. Wait a few minutes and try the original website again, as temporary server issues often resolve themselves quickly.

If other websites won't load either, restart your router. Unplug the power cable from the back of your router, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait another two minutes for it to fully restart. This simple step fixes approximately 70% of connection problems. While the router restarts, try restarting your device as well — shut it down completely, wait a minute, then power it back on.
