Stop Spam Calls Before They Reach You
How Spam Calls Work and Why They Target You
Spam calls have become one of the most common forms of unwanted contact in the United States. According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Americans received approximately 3.7 billion robocalls in 2023 alone. These calls range from scams offering fake prizes to impersonation schemes pretending to be from banks, the IRS, or utility companies.

Spam callers use several methods to reach people. They purchase lists of phone numbers from data brokers or compile them through data breaches. Your number may have been exposed through a retail website breach, social media profile, or simply by being listed in public directories. Some spammers use random number generation to dial thousands of numbers at once, hoping to reach real people.
Scammers also use a technique called "spoofing," where they mask their actual phone number to make it appear as though they're calling from a local number, a government agency, or a well-known company. For example, a scammer might make their call appear to come from your bank's main number or a local area code similar to yours. This tactic increases answer rates because people are more likely to pick up calls that seem to come from trusted sources.
Understanding the methods behind spam calls helps you recognize when you're being targeted. Many scams follow patterns: unsolicited offers, requests for personal information, urgent language about account issues, or promises of money or prizes. Recognizing these red flags is your first defense against falling victim to scams.
Practical Takeaway: Keep in mind that legitimate companies rarely call unsolicited with urgent requests for personal information or payment. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and call the organization directly using a phone number from your statement or official website.
Phone Settings and Built-In Call Filtering Features
Modern smartphones come equipped with call filtering and blocking features that require no additional purchase. Both Apple iPhones and Android devices offer native tools designed to reduce spam calls before they reach you.

On iPhones, the "Silence Unknown Callers" feature automatically sends calls from unknown numbers to voicemail while still allowing calls from contacts in your phone. To enable this, open Settings, tap Phone, then select "Silence Unknown Callers." This doesn't block calls entirely—voicemails are still received—but it prevents your phone from ringing for unknown numbers. The trade-off is that important calls from doctors, schools, or businesses you haven't previously contacted may go to voicemail.
Android devices offer the "Call Screen" feature (available on Pixel phones and some others). This tool can filter suspected spam calls automatically and even let you see transcripts of voicemails. Go to the Phone app, tap More, then Settings, and look for Call Screen options. You can also enable "Spam and Call Screen" to block numbers identified as spam.
Beyond the built-in features, both platforms allow you to manually block specific numbers. When you receive a spam call, you can add that number to your block list directly from the recent calls screen. While this won't stop new spam numbers from calling, it prevents repeated calls from the same source.
The Do Not Call Registry, operated by the FTC, is a free service where you can register your number. Visit donotcallregistry.gov or call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone you wish to register. Registration is permanent and doesn't expire. However, it's important to understand that the registry prevents telemarketing calls but doesn't stop scam calls, government agencies, charities, or political organizations from calling. Many scammers ignore the registry entirely.
Practical Takeaway: Enable "Silence Unknown Callers" or similar features on your phone today. These built-in tools are your first line of defense and require no subscription or additional setup. Test the feature by having a friend call from a number not in your contacts to confirm it works as expected.
Third-Party Apps and Call-Blocking Services
Beyond built-in phone features, numerous third-party applications offer more aggressive spam filtering. These apps maintain databases of known spam numbers and use artificial intelligence to identify suspicious calling patterns. Popular options include RoboKiller, Nomorobo, Call Blocker, Whoscall, and True Caller, many of which offer both free and paid versions.

Free versions of these apps typically block known spam numbers and let you manually add numbers to a blocklist. Paid versions often include features like caller ID for unknown numbers, real-time spam detection, advanced filtering, and detailed reports about blocked calls. Some services cost between $2 and $5 per month, while others charge annual fees.
Nomorobo functions differently from most apps—it works with your landline through your phone provider. The service intercepts suspected robocalls before they reach your phone, sending them to a honeypot where they're analyzed. Nomorobo reports that it blocks over 200 million spam calls monthly. This service is often free if your phone provider participates in the program; check with your carrier to see if it's available.
When choosing a third-party service, consider these factors: Does it integrate with your phone's native features? Does it require special permissions? How frequently is its spam database updated? Does it offer caller ID information? Some apps require access to your contacts and call history to function, which means you should review privacy policies before installing them. Reputable apps from established companies generally protect your data, but smaller developers may have less rigorous privacy practices.
It's worth noting that no app blocks 100% of spam calls. Scammers constantly change their techniques and numbers, so new spam calls will occasionally get through. Additionally, some legitimate businesses may be flagged as spam incorrectly, so review blocked call lists periodically to ensure you're not missing important contacts.
Practical Takeaway: Start with your phone's built-in features before installing additional apps. If spam calls persist after using native filters, research and install one reputable third-party app that matches your needs. Test it for two weeks to ensure it's not blocking legitimate calls before committing to a paid subscription.
Carrier-Level Spam Protection Offered by Phone Companies
Your phone service provider—whether Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, or another carrier—offers spam protection services that work at the network level before calls even reach your phone. These services are often more effective than individual apps because they filter calls across the entire network infrastructure.

Verizon offers "Call Filter," available as a free basic version and a paid premium version. The free version blocks known spam and scam numbers. The paid version ($2.99 per month) adds features like caller ID for unknown numbers, the ability to block calls by category (such as telemarketing or suspected fraud), and access to a personal block list. Verizon reports that Call Filter blocks over 8 billion spam calls annually.
AT&T's "AT&T Call Protect" similarly provides free basic protection with options for premium features. Basic protection blocks known spam numbers automatically. The premium version ($3.99 per month) provides caller ID information and category-based blocking. AT&T reports blocking nearly 2 billion spam calls per month using this service.
T-Mobile includes "T-Mobile Scam Shield" free for most customers. This service blocks calls identified as scams and provides warnings about suspicious numbers. T-Mobile's premium version adds features like call recording transcripts and detailed analytics about blocked calls.
The advantage of carrier-level protection is that filtering happens before calls reach your phone, reducing battery drain and network traffic compared to individual apps. Additionally, carriers have direct access to call origin data and network patterns, allowing them to identify suspicious calling behavior more accurately than third-party apps.
To activate your carrier's spam protection, contact your provider directly or visit their website. Most carriers allow you to manage settings through their mobile apps or online portals. You can typically customize which types of calls to block and create allowlists of numbers you want to receive calls from, such as doctors' offices or schools.
Practical Takeaway: Call your phone provider and ask whether spam protection is already included in your plan. Most carriers offer free basic protection, and upgrading to premium versions costs just a few dollars monthly—an inexpensive way to significantly reduce spam calls.
