Understanding AAA Plus Membership Benefits and Costs

What AAA Plus Membership Covers

AAA Plus membership is a tier of roadside assistance coverage offered by the American Automobile Association. This membership level provides towing and roadside services beyond what standard AAA membership offers. Understanding the specific coverage details helps people determine whether this membership matches their needs and budget.

AAA Plus typically includes towing services up to 100 miles to a repair facility of your choice, compared to 7 miles with basic AAA membership. This expanded towing range matters significantly for people who live in rural areas, travel frequently, or have regular commutes that take them far from home. The coverage also includes lockout service, where a technician comes to your vehicle if you've locked your keys inside. This service covers up to two incidents per membership year.

Fuel delivery is another component of AAA Plus coverage. If you run out of gas, AAA will bring fuel to your location. The membership covers the service call, though you typically pay for the fuel itself. Battery service is included, meaning AAA will come to jumpstart your vehicle if your battery dies. They can also arrange battery replacement if needed. Flat tire service allows AAA to change a tire on your vehicle or arrange towing if the damage is too severe for a roadside repair.

The membership also covers winch-out service, where AAA helps free a vehicle that's stuck in mud, snow, or a ditch. This service can prevent expensive professional recovery costs. Mechanical locksmith service is included for vehicles with electronic locks that malfunction. These services operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, meaning coverage extends to nights, weekends, and holidays.

Practical takeaway: Before purchasing AAA Plus, review the specific mileage limits, number of service incidents covered per year, and types of repairs included. Contact AAA directly to receive their current membership guide, which outlines exactly what's covered and any exclusions that might apply to your situation.

How Membership Costs Compare to Other Options

AAA Plus membership involves both an initial membership fee and potentially additional costs depending on your membership duration and any promotional offers. As of 2024, AAA Plus annual membership typically costs between $125 to $180 per year, though this varies by state and region since AAA operates through regional clubs. Some states have higher costs due to local economic factors and service coverage areas.

When comparing AAA Plus to other roadside assistance options, several alternatives exist. Stand-alone roadside assistance programs from insurance companies often cost $10 to $15 monthly, totaling $120 to $180 annually. However, these programs frequently offer less extensive coverage than AAA Plus. Some car manufacturers include roadside assistance as part of their warranty package, typically covering 3 to 5 years. Credit cards sometimes include roadside assistance as a cardholder benefit, though coverage details vary significantly.

The cost-benefit analysis depends on your driving patterns and vehicle reliability. Someone who drives a 15-year-old vehicle frequently faces higher breakdown risks and might benefit from AAA Plus coverage. The single towing service alone—if you need towing from a rural area back to your home—could cost $200 to $500 at market rates, potentially justifying the annual membership cost. Conversely, someone with a reliable new vehicle under warranty might find standalone roadside assistance or their insurance company's offering more economical.

AAA membership includes additional benefits beyond roadside assistance. Members receive discounts on hotel stays, restaurant visits, car rentals, and other services. Some members report saving $50 to $100 annually through these discounts alone. AAA also provides TripTik travel planning tools, discounts on DMV services in some states, and access to legal referral services. These supplementary benefits should factor into your overall cost consideration.

Many regional AAA clubs offer discounts for first-time members or for paying multiple years upfront. Some employers partner with AAA to provide group discounts to employees, sometimes reducing the cost by 10 to 15 percent. Military members, seniors, and students may qualify for reduced rates. Checking with your employer, professional associations, or alumni networks could reveal additional savings opportunities.

Practical takeaway: Calculate your membership cost against the likelihood and potential expense of needing roadside assistance. If you average more than one breakdown per year, or if you frequently drive in areas where professional towing would be expensive, AAA Plus likely costs less than paying for services independently. Request quotes from your current insurance provider and other roadside assistance companies to make a direct cost comparison.

Types of Vehicles and Coverage Limitations

AAA Plus membership covers most standard passenger vehicles, including sedans, SUVs, minivans, and pickup trucks. However, certain vehicle types face coverage restrictions or exclusions. Understanding these limitations prevents surprises when you need service. Most motorcycles are not covered under standard AAA membership tiers, though some regional clubs offer separate motorcycle membership options. Trailers, whether utility trailers or boat trailers, typically aren't covered, though vehicles towing trailers may be covered up to certain weight limits.

Recreational vehicles present complex coverage situations. Large motorhomes often exceed the weight limits for AAA towing equipment and service capabilities. Some regional AAA clubs offer specialized RV membership tiers with different coverage parameters. If you own an RV, contacting your local AAA club directly clarifies what coverage you can purchase. Similarly, commercial vehicles and vehicles used primarily for business purposes sometimes fall outside standard membership coverage, though this varies by regional club policies.

All-terrain vehicles, golf carts, and other non-street-legal vehicles are not covered under AAA membership. Vehicles requiring specialized towing equipment—such as certain luxury or exotic cars that need flatbed towing—may have additional restrictions. AAA typically tows vehicles using standard heavy-duty wrecker equipment, which can accommodate most vehicles, but specialized towing for certain low-clearance or high-value vehicles might not be available through standard membership.

Coverage also includes limitations on repeated service requests. Most memberships cover a certain number of service calls per membership year, often unlimited, but individual service incidents may have caps. For example, towing is covered to 100 miles, but if you need towing beyond that distance, you pay the additional cost. If your vehicle breaks down three times in one month—potentially indicating a chronic reliability problem—AAA might limit coverage or suggest that the vehicle needs professional repair rather than repeated roadside patches.

Vehicles with mechanical failures that result from lack of maintenance aren't always covered. For instance, if your engine fails due to never changing the oil, AAA might decline to cover towing costs related to that specific failure. Similarly, services related to accidents, traffic violations, or illegal activity aren't covered. Understanding that AAA membership covers unexpected mechanical failures and emergencies, not all possible vehicle problems, helps set realistic expectations.

Practical takeaway: Review the complete membership agreement for your specific vehicle type before purchasing AAA Plus. If you own a motorcycle, RV, vintage vehicle, or commercial vehicle, verify that coverage extends to your particular situation. Document the membership details provided at purchase so you have written confirmation of what your membership covers if you need to dispute a claim later.

How to Request and Receive Service

AAA maintains a 24-hour dispatch system for roadside assistance requests. When your vehicle breaks down or you need assistance, you call the AAA emergency hotline number. This number appears on your membership card, and AAA can also text a service request link to members who prefer digital communication. The phone call typically takes 3 to 5 minutes, during which you provide your location, the type of assistance needed, and contact information.

The dispatch process begins immediately after your call. An AAA representative logs your request into the system and dispatches the nearest available service provider—often a contracted towing company or AAA-affiliated service center. Wait times depend on your location and time of day. In urban areas during business hours, a technician might arrive within 30 to 45 minutes. Rural locations or late-night requests might take 60 to 90 minutes or longer. The dispatcher provides an estimated arrival time and can call or text you with updates.

Before a technician arrives, gather information to communicate to them. Your vehicle's make, model, year, and license plate number help with dispatch and billing. Describe what you're experiencing—does the engine not start, are you hearing unusual noises, did the vehicle break down while driving. This information allows the technician to come prepared with the appropriate equipment and parts if possible. If you're stranded on a highway, staying in your vehicle with hazards on and seatbelt fastened is safest. Move to a safe location
