Your Free Guide to Changing Your Microsoft Password

Understanding Microsoft Account Password Basics

Your Microsoft account password is the key to accessing many services and devices. This includes Outlook email, OneDrive cloud storage, Windows operating systems, Xbox accounts, and Microsoft 365 applications like Word and Excel. When you change your password, you're updating the security credentials for all these services at once.

A strong password contains a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. For example, a strong password might look like: Tr0picSunset$42Ocean. Weak passwords—like "password123" or "abc123"—put your account at risk because they're easier for others to guess or crack using automated tools.

Microsoft requires passwords to be at least 8 characters long. However, security experts often recommend making passwords longer (12-16 characters) and more complex to reduce the chance of unauthorized entry. The longer and more varied your password, the harder it becomes for someone to gain unauthorized entry to your account.

There are several reasons you might want to change your password. You should change it if you believe someone else knows it, if you've used the same password on multiple websites and one of those websites experienced a data breach, or simply as a regular security practice every few months. Some people change their passwords seasonally, while others do it annually.

Practical Takeaway: Before changing your password, think about what makes a strong one. Avoid using birthdays, names of family members, pet names, or other personal information that someone could guess. Consider using a passphrase—a combination of random words that's long and difficult to crack.

How to Change Your Password on Windows 10 and Windows 11

If you use a Windows computer, you can change your Microsoft account password directly from your device's settings. This method works on both Windows 10 and Windows 11, though the exact appearance of the settings screens may differ slightly between versions.

To start, open your Windows Settings by clicking the Start button and typing "settings," then press Enter. Once in Settings, look for the "Accounts" option in the left menu and click on it. Within Accounts, you'll see several options including "Your info," "Email & accounts," "Sign-in options," and others. Click on "Sign-in options" to proceed.

In the Sign-in options menu, scroll down until you find a section labeled "Password." Under this section, you should see a button that says "Change." Click this button to begin the password change process. Windows will ask you to enter your current password to verify your identity—this is a security measure to prevent unauthorized changes.

After entering your current password, you'll be prompted to create a new password. Type your new password carefully, as you won't see the characters for security reasons. You'll need to enter it twice to confirm you've typed it correctly. Windows will then ask you to create a password hint—something that might remind you of your password but wouldn't be obvious to someone else. For example, if your password references your favorite book, you might hint "favorite author's name."

Once you've entered everything correctly, click "Next" and then "Finish." Your password has now been changed. You'll use this new password the next time you sign into your Windows computer.

Practical Takeaway: Write down your new password in a secure location (like a locked drawer or password manager) until you've memorized it. This prevents you from getting locked out of your own account if you forget the new password before it becomes automatic.

Changing Your Password Through Microsoft's Online Account Portal

You can also change your Microsoft password using any web browser by visiting the official Microsoft account website. This method works regardless of what type of computer or device you use. You'll need to go to account.microsoft.com and sign in with your current Microsoft account credentials.

Once you're signed in, look for your account name or profile picture in the upper right corner of the page and click on it. A dropdown menu will appear showing several options. Select "My Microsoft account" or similar option to access your account settings page. On this page, you should see a section labeled "Security" or "Password & security."

Within the security section, look for an option that says "Change password" or "Update password." Click on this option. Microsoft will ask you to verify your identity before allowing you to make changes. They may send a security code to your phone number or email address associated with the account. Enter this code to prove you're the account owner.

After verification, you'll see fields for your current password and your new password. Enter your current password first, then type your new password twice to confirm it matches. Make sure there are no extra spaces at the beginning or end of your password. Click the button to confirm the change, and Microsoft will update your password across all services.

One advantage of changing your password through the Microsoft website is that you can do it from anywhere—including from a phone, tablet, or a computer that isn't yours. This is particularly useful if you need to change your password while traveling or if you suspect someone might have your current password.

Practical Takeaway: After changing your password online, sign out of all your active sessions. Most accounts show you where you're currently signed in (often called "active sessions" or "devices"). Signing out everywhere ensures that if someone else has your old password, they'll be locked out.

Changing Your Password on Mobile Devices

You can change your Microsoft password on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device using the Microsoft account website. Open a web browser on your mobile device and navigate to account.microsoft.com. Sign in with your current account information.

On mobile devices, the layout may look different from what you see on a computer. You might need to tap a menu button (often shown as three horizontal lines) to access navigation options. Look for settings or account information options. Navigate to the security section where password options are located.

Select the option to change your password. As with the desktop version, Microsoft will send a verification code to your phone or email. Enter this code to confirm you're the account owner. Then proceed with entering your current and new passwords.

If you use Microsoft's official apps like Outlook, OneDrive, or Microsoft Teams on your phone, these apps will automatically update to use your new password within a few hours. You don't need to do anything in each individual app—the change applies across all Microsoft services. However, if an app seems to stop working after your password change, you can manually sign out and sign back in to refresh the connection.

For Android devices, you might also see password change options in your device's settings under Accounts or Google account settings, depending on how your Microsoft account is connected to your Android device. Some Android users link their Microsoft account to their phone for email and calendar syncing, and changing your password in your phone's settings may affect that connection.

Practical Takeaway: Keep a written note of your new password somewhere secure for the first few days after changing it. This prevents frustration if you accidentally lock yourself out of your account on a mobile device while the app is updating to your new credentials.

What to Do If You Forget Your New Password

If you change your password and then forget it before memorizing it, Microsoft provides recovery options. The most common method involves the security information you set up on your account. This might include a backup email address, a phone number, or security questions you answered.

Go to the Microsoft account login page at account.microsoft.com. Instead of signing in, click on "Can't access your account" or "Forgot my password" link. Microsoft will ask for your email address or phone number associated with the account. Enter this information.

Microsoft will then send a verification code to one of your recovery methods—either to a backup email address or as a text to your phone number. Check that email or phone for the code and enter it when prompted. Once verified, you'll be able to set a new password.

This recovery process typically takes just a few minutes. However, it's much easier to avoid this situation altogether by preparing ahead. Before changing your password, make sure you have access to your recovery email address and backup phone number. Test them if you're not certain—try sending yourself an email to that address or confirming you can receive texts on that phone number.

If you don't have access to your recovery methods (for example, you no longer have the phone number or can't access the backup email), account recovery becomes more complicated. Microsoft
