Your Free Guide to U-Haul Rental Pricing and Truck Selection

Understanding U-Haul Truck Size Categories and Their Typical Uses

U-Haul offers several truck sizes to match different moving needs. The smallest option is typically the 10-foot truck, which has an interior cargo space of about 300 cubic feet. This size works well for moving a studio apartment or a dorm room, or for hauling items like furniture from one room to another. The 15-foot truck provides roughly 450 cubic feet of space and suits one-bedroom apartments or small homes. A 20-foot truck offers about 600 cubic feet and handles two to three-bedroom homes. The 26-foot truck, one of the largest standard options, provides approximately 1,100 cubic feet and is designed for larger three to four-bedroom homes or commercial relocations.

Each truck size has different weight capacities as well. The 10-foot truck typically holds around 4,000 pounds of cargo, while the 20-foot truck can carry approximately 8,000 pounds. Larger trucks like the 26-foot model can transport 13,000 pounds or more. Weight limits matter because overloading a truck can damage it and create safety issues on the road. U-Haul staff can help you weigh your belongings or provide estimates based on room counts and item descriptions.

Beyond the standard pickup trucks and moving vans, U-Haul also rents cargo vans, pickup trucks of various bed sizes, and specialty equipment like trailers. A cargo van typically offers 200 to 400 cubic feet of interior space and works for smaller loads or local moves. Pickup trucks with open beds suit jobs like hauling construction materials, yard waste, or equipment. Trailers range from small enclosed units to large flatbeds for heavy equipment or vehicles.

Practical takeaway: Create an inventory of items you plan to move and measure large furniture pieces. Compare these measurements against U-Haul's truck dimensions to pick the right size. This step reduces the risk of paying for a larger truck than you need or discovering your belongings don't fit.

How U-Haul Rental Pricing Works and What Factors Affect Your Quote

U-Haul pricing operates on a mileage-based system combined with a base rental rate. When you request a quote, you'll enter a pickup location, a drop-off location, and your desired rental dates. The system calculates the distance between these two points and multiplies it by the mileage rate, which varies by truck size and region. As of recent data, mileage rates typically range from about $0.50 to $1.50 per mile, with smaller trucks at the lower end and larger trucks at the higher end. A local move of 50 miles in a 10-foot truck might cost $25 to $75 just in mileage charges, while a 500-mile move in the same truck could range from $250 to $750.

The base rental rate varies significantly based on demand and season. During peak moving season—typically May through September—rental rates are higher because more people move during warmer months. A 10-foot truck might rent for $19.95 per day during off-peak times but could cost $39.95 or more per day during peak season in competitive markets. The base rate is separate from mileage charges, meaning you pay both. If you rent a truck for three days at $35 per day plus 300 miles at $1.00 per mile, your total would be $105 in daily charges plus $300 in mileage, totaling $405 before taxes and fees.

Several factors influence your final price. Geographic location matters significantly—rentals in urban areas or during peak season cost more than rentals in rural areas or during winter. The specific pickup and drop-off locations can vary in price too. One-way rentals, where you pick up in one city and return in another, often cost more than round-trip rentals because the truck must be repositioned. Weather and time of year affect pricing; moving companies charge premium rates during winter holidays and summer vacation periods. Additionally, truck availability plays a role. If many customers are renting in your area on your desired dates, prices rise due to limited supply.

Practical takeaway: Get multiple quotes by trying different dates if your move is flexible. Shifting your move date by even one week, or renting during a weekday instead of a weekend, can sometimes reduce costs by 20 to 40 percent. Check quotes for both one-way and round-trip options to see which serves your move better.

Additional Fees, Insurance, and Equipment Rentals Beyond the Truck

The truck rental price is only part of your total moving cost. U-Haul charges additional fees that can add significantly to your bill. Damage waivers or insurance coverage are optional but frequently purchased. A basic damage waiver typically costs $15 to $30 per day and covers damage to the truck interior or exterior, with a deductible that you would pay if damage occurs. Without this coverage, you are responsible for all damage costs, which can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars for major incidents. For a three-day rental, damage waiver costs might total $45 to $90.

Environmental fees appear on most U-Haul quotes and typically range from $1 to $5 per rental. These cover the cost of proper fuel and disposal management. Equipment rental fees apply if you add items like dollies, furniture pads, or hand trucks. A furniture dolly costs around $5 to $7 per day, while furniture pads run approximately $1.50 to $3 per pad. Many customers rent multiple dollies and dozens of pads, easily adding $50 to $150 to their bill. U-Haul also offers moving boxes and supplies, which cost extra—for example, a bundle of ten medium boxes might cost $15 to $25.

Fuel charges represent another significant variable. When you return the truck, U-Haul charges you for any fuel not in the tank, at a rate that typically exceeds market prices by 20 to 40 percent. If you rent a 20-foot truck with a 40-gallon tank and return it half-empty, you might pay $3 to $5 per gallon for fuel, totaling $60 to $100 for 20 gallons. To avoid these premium charges, many renters fill the tank themselves just before returning the truck. Some rental locations offer pre-paid fuel plans where you pay a flat rate upfront for a full tank, which can save money if fuel prices are high or if you use significant fuel on your move.

Late fees apply if you keep the truck past your scheduled return date. These fees typically start at $20 to $40 per hour for the first few hours and can escalate to daily charges if the truck is not returned same-day. Pickup and drop-off fees may apply at certain locations, especially if you rent from a non-U-Haul facility or request delivery service.

Practical takeaway: Request an itemized quote that breaks down the base rental, mileage charges, damage waiver, equipment fees, and environmental charges. This transparency helps you identify where your money goes and spot opportunities to reduce costs. For example, borrowing pads and dollies from friends instead of renting them can save $30 to $100.

Strategies for Reducing Your U-Haul Rental Costs

Several practical strategies can meaningfully lower your moving expenses. First, consider timing your move strategically. Moving during off-peak season—typically November through March, excluding holidays—can reduce rates by 30 to 50 percent compared to summer rates. Similarly, moving on weekdays costs less than weekend moves because demand is lower. A Friday-Saturday move might cost 20 to 40 percent more than a Monday-Wednesday move in the same week. If your schedule allows flexibility, choosing an off-peak date can produce significant savings.

Downsizing before your move reduces the truck size you need and therefore the total rental cost. A 20-foot truck might cost $150 to $200 per day during peak season, while a 15-foot truck could be $100 to $130 per day. Donating, selling, or discarding items before moving saves on both truck size and equipment rentals. Many people find they can move in one size smaller by being selective about what they transport, saving $50 to $100 or more for a multi-day rental.

Round-trip rentals often cost less per mile than one-way rentals. If your destination is within reasonable distance, renting the
