Your Guide to Royal Caribbean Cruise Check-In
Understanding Royal Caribbean's Check-In Process Overview
Royal Caribbean cruise check-in is the process you'll go through before boarding your ship. This process verifies your identity, checks your travel documents, and confirms your booking information. Understanding what happens during check-in helps you prepare and move through the process more smoothly on departure day.

The check-in experience varies depending on whether you use Royal Caribbean's online check-in options or complete check-in at the cruise terminal. Most passengers can begin portions of check-in up to 24 hours before their sailing date. The entire terminal check-in typically takes 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how busy the port is and how prepared you are with required documents.
Royal Caribbean operates cruise terminals at major U.S. ports including Miami, Port Canaveral, Galveston, New York, and others. International ports like Bermuda, Jamaica, and ports in the Caribbean also process check-in for Royal Caribbean ships. Each port has slightly different procedures, but the core requirements remain the same across all locations.
Your check-in appointment time depends on your cabin category and loyalty status with Royal Caribbean's Crown and Anchor Society program. Suite guests and Diamond-level loyalty members typically receive earlier check-in times than standard cabin guests. This tiered system means passengers with higher-category cabins or loyalty status board first, while other guests board during their assigned time windows.
Practical Takeaway: Review your booking confirmation email from Royal Caribbean to locate your assigned check-in time. Note this time in your calendar and plan to arrive at the port with enough buffer time to find parking, navigate the terminal, and complete check-in without rushing.
Documents You'll Need at the Terminal
Bringing the correct travel documents is essential for completing check-in. The primary document you'll need is a valid government-issued photo ID. For U.S. citizens sailing to the Caribbean or Canada, this typically means a passport or passport card. A Real ID-compliant driver's license may work for specific sailings to Canada, but Royal Caribbean recommends a passport for international travel.

Your travel documents must match the name exactly as it appears in your Royal Caribbean booking. If your name differs between your ID and your cruise reservation due to marriage, divorce, or name changes, you should contact Royal Caribbean before your sailing date to update your reservation. Mismatched names can delay check-in or potentially prevent boarding.
If you're traveling with children, each child needs their own travel document. Minors under 18 typically need a passport for Caribbean cruises. For cruises to Canada from U.S. ports, children may be able to use a passport card, passport, or in some cases a U.S. citizen card. Royal Caribbean's website specifies requirements based on your specific itinerary.
You should also bring your cruise ticket or booking reference number. Most people bring a printed copy or have this information on their phone. Additionally, bring proof of any onboard charges you've pre-paid, such as beverage packages or spa credits, though this is primarily for your own records.
If you have any special needs or medical considerations, bring relevant documentation. For example, if you have mobility limitations and need wheelchair access, or if you have severe allergies requiring special meal preparations, having medical documentation can help the crew serve you better during your cruise.
Practical Takeaway: Create a folder on your phone or print and place in an envelope: your passport, booking confirmation, and any pre-payment receipts. Check these documents are current—passports must be valid for at least six months beyond your cruise return date for most Caribbean destinations.
Online Check-In: Getting Started Before the Terminal
Royal Caribbean's online check-in system allows you to complete portions of the check-in process from your home computer or mobile device. You can access this system approximately 24 hours before your sailing time. Online check-in saves time at the terminal because much of the administrative work is already finished.

To start online check-in, visit Royal Caribbean's website and sign into "My Cruises" using your booking reference number and last name. The system will display your reservation and guide you through entering passenger information. You'll confirm the names of all passengers traveling with you, verify that they match your travel documents, and indicate their relationship to the primary booker (adult, child, infant, etc.).
During online check-in, you'll also select your dining preferences if you haven't already done so. Royal Caribbean offers different dining package options, including the traditional dining room (with set times and assigned seating), early dining (earlier seating times), late dining (later seating times), or flexible dining (choosing your time each evening). Making this selection online means it's ready for the crew when you board.
The online system also asks you to provide emergency contact information and verify any special needs. If you require wheelchair accessibility, have a service animal, need dietary accommodations, or have other special requests, noting these during online check-in ensures the ship's crew knows about your needs before you arrive. This coordination helps the crew prepare your cabin or arrange services in advance.
After completing online check-in, you'll receive a confirmation with a digital badge or document. Some Royal Caribbean ships have begun using mobile check-in technology that produces a barcode on your phone. This barcode is scanned at the terminal to speed up the boarding process. However, you'll still need to arrive at the terminal at your assigned check-in time for security and final verification.
Practical Takeaway: Complete online check-in as soon as it becomes available (24 hours before sailing). Do this from a quiet location where you can carefully verify all passenger names match their travel documents exactly. Keep a screenshot or photo of your confirmation barcode on your phone as backup.
What Happens During Terminal Check-In
When you arrive at the cruise terminal, you'll enter a large building with multiple check-in stations arranged by last name or cabin category. Follow the directional signs and staff guidance to find your designated line. If you're in a suite or high loyalty status, you may be directed to a separate premium check-in area, which typically moves faster.

At the check-in counter, you'll provide your photo ID and cruise documentation to a Royal Caribbean agent. They'll verify your identity matches your booking and that your travel documents are valid for the ports on your itinerary. For international sailings, the agent may ask about your citizenship or passport validity dates. This verification process is mandated by international maritime law and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The agent will scan your ID and passport into Royal Caribbean's system. They'll confirm your cabin assignment and make any final updates to your reservation. If you have pre-paid onboard charges like beverage packages, they'll verify this in the system. They'll also confirm your dining selections and any special requests you noted during online check-in.
After the initial check-in desk, you may proceed through security screening, similar to airport security. You'll place bags and personal items on a conveyor belt for X-ray screening. Staff will also use a metal detector wand to screen passengers. This security process is standard at all cruise ports and takes 5-10 minutes depending on how busy the terminal is.
After security, you'll receive your cabin key card and any final documentation. The key card is your access to your cabin, the dining venues, the casino (if applicable), and other onboard spaces. Some ships use a wristband with an embedded chip instead of a traditional card. The agent will explain how to use your key card and may provide information about dining times or other onboard procedures.
Throughout this process, staff may ask questions about whether you're bringing any prohibited items. Royal Caribbean prohibits items like weapons, excessive alcohol, or certain electronics. Being familiar with the prohibited items list before arriving at the terminal helps you avoid delays or confiscation of personal belongings.
Practical Takeaway: Arrive at the terminal at least 3 hours before your assigned check-in time, even if you've completed online check-in. This buffer accounts for parking, walking to the terminal building, and inevitable lines. Wear comfortable shoes since you'll be standing and walking on concrete floors.
Special Circumstances and Specific Situations
If you're traveling with infants or very young children, check-in includes additional steps. You'll need to provide birth certificates or passports for all children. If a child is traveling with only one parent, Royal Caribbean may request additional documentation to confirm the other parent's consent. This saf
